From FoxSports.Com, today. Is New York's best team wearing green ? and not blue ? this year? Quite possibly. If the Jets can somehow knock off Indianapolis next weekend, Giants fans will never hear the end of it. Get ready for Gang Green Nation to assault the WFAN airwaves, New York. Bruce from Bayside's already got the phone in his hand.
You know, I was thinking that just this morning. I think the Jets are as underrated this year as the Giants are overrated. The Giants, with all the talk of them being contenders, all the talent (and they do have a handful), all the supposed "discipline" (look at their penalties so far), all the fan expectations, etc., etc., it's like, they have nowhere to go but down. And now, they even have dissention among themsleves as a distraction. They're such high flyers,if they lose they're blaming the coaching, etc., etc. A bunch of flaming assholes. The Jets are quietly going about the business of jelling and planning for the next game. It reminds me of the stock market. Where do you want to put your money? If the Jets were a stock I'd be buying all I could get and selling all my shares in the Giants. The Jets could wind up with a better record than the Giants this year, when it's all said and done.
The one thing I always found so strange about the NY media is they'll all swear that the Giants are NY's team, and that they're more popular. But honestly, I spent most of my life in NY, and it always seemed to me that there were waaaaay more Jets fans, and Jets fans are way more passionate about their team. I have friends from other states that came to work in NY, and they say all their coworkers ever talk about are the Jets. Where are all these supposed Giants fans that dominate NY? We know LI is mostly Jets fans, and NYC (Manhattan) seems to be mostly Jets fans too. Where are the Giants fans? The only ones I know are from New Jersey, and they're not NYers wtf.
Though I haven't lived in New York for 8 years now...(Of course when the Jets make the AFC Championship game is the year I leave to Tampa, hah) It is usually considered a Yankees and Giants city. I usually hear that the Jets fans usually reside in Jersey, and more fans of the Jets are in jersey...While in NY, it's usually Giants that outnumber the Jets fans... Just what I hear.
I think Giant fans mostly come from north Jersey, Westchester, and Ct. due to proximity to Yankee Stadium. When the Giants moved to the Meadowlands, the 60,000 plus season tickets from Yankee Stadium were transferred to New Jersey as hardly any families gave up their tickets...and those tickets are handed down thru generations by inheritance and gifts. The Jets having started in Shea Stadium have most of their fans in Long Island and Queens due to the obvious geographic location.
The Giants' fan base is deeply rooted in upper-middle class towns in mid to northern New Jersey... towns like Montclair, Chatham, Summit, etc. The demographics are, they probably have a median annual income that exceeds $200,000 and most consider themselves "professionals" or "white-collar." They live in "upscale" neighborhoods, drive (or preferrably lease) automobiles and SUV's with window stickers that exceed $45,000. Their children attend private schools and they wouldn't be caught dead sending their precious, spoiled offspring to a "state" college because it would make them appear destitute, for God's sake. So they refinance their upscale homes and send little Jason to Boston College to the tune of $35,000 per year so they can reference this little tidbit of information at the annual neighborhood holiday cocktail party. They attire themselves fashionably, but not too "in," because this would appear garrish. Nordstrom's is a good label, for example, and frequent reference to this establishment makes for good conversation, as in "I just LOVE the touch of the piano music in the main lounge, it always helps selecting Herman's $35 ties so much easier!" When they attend Giants games and tailgate (and they do tailgate, but it must be done tastefully), they won't be caught dead standing over some smoking, rusted-out, crappy barbecue pit. Instead, it's one of those new, $350 units from Abercrombie and Fitch. They pick up take-out from the local, upscale delicatessen ("I just LOVE their smoked salmon!") and reheat it over the new, spotless grille. Swilling beer is out of the question. A decent cabernet or sautern is in order, and nothing less than $18.00 a bottle, PLEASE! If you must, bring your Yellow Tail, even though we know you only paid $15.00 a bottle for it. Grey Goose vodka is permitted, but only extra-dry and served chilled but neat. An olive is acceptable. The attire of the day are navy slacks with a Brooks Brothers leather belt and penny loafers. An all-wool blend Giants sweater tops a white dress shirt, of course. It's not permissable to stand in the parking lot... such behavior is reserved for commoners. The chair of choice is the official blue and red Brooks Brothers Giants lawn chair with built-in cupholder. It reclines, of course. In the stands, they calmly root for their team. Profanity is out of the question, even when Plaxico Burress resembles Bozo the Clown doing his juggling act at little Marissa's birthday party last week at the Tower's Restarant on Route 22 in Union. And Jeremy Shockey is allowed to do anything he wishes for a number of reasons. First of all, he's big. Secondly, even if he acts like a complete adolescent and distracts the team immensely with his on and off-field, juvenile tirades, we don't comment on any of this out of fear that little Jason will pick up on this and discover that his tirades are a carbon-copy of Shockey, even though Jason is only 11. And if and when the Giants have to play those terrible, unruly, low-class Jets... that OTHER team from NY, we'll play them alright, but it's always such a crass event. The parking lot is always SO loaded with those disgusting, low-class Jets fans in their hideous Green and White. "Gang Green" indeed! A bunch of beer swilling, loud, obnoxious fanatics hell-bent on beating us! They can't do THAT! We're better than they are... uh... aren't we? Aren't we? I've told this story before, but I remember going to Giants stadium when the Jets were playing the Giants one year, and we were already out of the playoffs, but the giants weren't, and they desperately needed this game to clinch a playoff birth. So, you get the picture... they needed to win and we had nothing to lose. Then we went ahead and beat them up. So at the end of the game, this lady is sitting there all day next to me, dressed in her Blue and Red and not saying much (God forbid she should loudly cheer for her team) and as I'm standing up she says to me, "Why couldn't the Jets just let us win? They knew we had playoff hopes and they had nothing to lose... thye should have let us win!" And I just said something like, "You've got to be fucking kidding me, lady."
^The Giants fan base is not only in Northern New Jersey, but among upper class New Yorkers in general.
Oh Brother... Let's not do this again. "The Mets are taking over NY" stuff was pathetic enough as they beat up on teams in the minor leagues and get trounced by the American league - Don't look now but the Super Mets don't even have the best record in NY anymore with THAT schedule and patsies they got to play.... Do they even have a #1 pitcher? As they all point and laugh at Randy Johnson - come on. Watch the Mets get swept in round 1..... Bunch of panzies. DON'T lay that BS on my Jets. It's embarrassing and again, it's far from true in either case.
I agree with Section 227, Row 5. The Jets are underrated this year, as they have a good offense and defense. The Giants have the good sqaud as well, but they are overrated as they make carless mistakes as far as running plays and comming penalties goes. If the Jets win this weekend it'd be a big boost for the team. People will truly know who the better NY NFL team is
Classy Giants fans? Didn't they throw ice balls at referees one year? Either way, it still can't be NYers if you're listing mostly Jersey. Giants fans suck. I'd much rather chill with firefighters and other PEOPLE than some rich snobs. There aren't even that many rich snobs, what's the percentage of the population that makes over $200k? It's got to be a Jets town since most people make less than that. The Jets have ALWAYS been the cooler franchise. We've always been the rebels. I think maybe someone should take a poll or something one of these days. All my informal polls show the Jets as NY's team.
LOL WTF? I guess some people just need to vent... must be that time of month I don't see what the hell any of this had to do with the thread except for some vague reference in that last sentence.
I grew up in fairfield county connecticut and there were many more giant fans there. It was definitely a luxury box sort of demographic. A lot of them probably couldn't name more than 4-5 players on the team. I live in manhattan now and I feel like I see a lot more jet jereseys here. and it's definitely more of a blue collar crowd. I'm sure they know there stuff a lot better too. And I would guess that the size of the jets fan base stays relatively consistent through good years and bad while the giants fan base swells considerably during winning seasons.
First of all, when the Jets were considering the WSS, they posted the demographics of their season ticket base. 40% were from NJ, 25% from NYC, 15% from Northern suburbs (Rockland, Westchester, Connecticut). That leaves 20% from LI. I live in NJ and the loyalties are clearly split. However, it is clear that Jet fans are more passionate. Jet fans let everybody know they are Jet fans and everybody knows who the Jet fans are. Giant fans are subdued, quiet and less passionate. Most Giant fans are also Yankee fans and the Yankees take precedence. As for Jet fans, the Jets are usually their top priority. Jet fans are louder, more loyal, more passionate etc. As a Jet fan, I just find the Giants to be boring. When the FAN or ESPN starts talking about the Giants, I switch stations.
That was the game i KNEW WITHOUT A DOUBT that i was green and white. It would have been fun to have a NY team in the playoffs but i just could not root against the JETS. My brother was more of a giants fan at the time and was pissed and i loved it! It was a sweet victory.:jets:
"You've got to be fucking kidding me, lady." That's funny!!! Many Giant fans I know are stuck-up. so much that I hear them whine/boast (depending on how you look at it) that they don't care to go to a game live, as it's cold/raining, etc. They want to sit home and watch the game in HD, with Tivo so it doesn't interupt their other activities, and also with broadcasters so they can understand it.
That was in 1988 I believe and parcells was the Coach. He looked pissed at that one. Watch a Jet game and watch a Giant game. Tell me who loves thier team more. You never see the giants get loud or anything. I watch the games at a bar even the giant fans know it. And when it comes to giant fans, man, they are unequivocabally full of shit about their team. "They're the greatest!", even after thier 4-12 season. Just shut the F up.
