Barc, I just don't see the BPA at 18 being a WR, I see it being a defensive player. I know we have a need to fill I just don't see the Idzik taking need over BPA. Last year we had a chance to get OLB Jarvis jones who was considered one of the better OLB's and we passed on him for Richardson. How do you think it will play out?
Need/future need always factors in to BPA. They won't draft another Dlinesman even if another Richardson is there. Last year we needed to replace Devito + Po'uha. Coples was Devito's replacement and Richardson was Po'uha's. Exceptional play from Harrison and the overall depth of the line is what sent Coples to OLB. This draft is deep with WRs and QBs. I don't want to see us stressing D in that type of draft. Barnes, Coples & Pace is a decent unit. I wouldn't mind drafting another, but it really doesn't matter how good the D is if we can't build a decent offense.
The way I see it, if there is an OLB that they consider BPA he will be chosen and Coples will be back to his natural position DE, that puts Demario, Harris, Pace and the draftee as the 4 LB with Coples, Richardson and Wilkerson on the line. The WR will then be selected or they may trade up in the second round to get the WR they are targeting, not saying it will happen but if they feel someone else has their eye on a WR they want they might just do it. Nothing wrong with giving up a 5th to move up in the second round, still gives you a 3rd and 4th to play with. Or they might have another WR that will fall to them in the second, I think it will be Allen Robertson. I hope I'm wrong but I don't see anyone in the WR class other than Watkins as a first round pick.
He signed for a little more than i would've thought but I'd like to see how the contract is structured and how much of it is guaranteed. I bet it's back loaded and we'll just cut him next season with little to no dead money. Idzik is smart like that, he's not one to waste cap space no matter how much free money we have. As I've said before in other threads, this is exactly Idzik's plan. Sign hold the fort vets who still have a little something left in the tank, and draft bpa in every round. He won't have to reach for anyone or draft a need because the team will already have serviceable vets playing in every position. We'll still have needs don't get me wrong, but they'll be needs for 2015 when the vets get cut or just play out their one year deals ala Winslow and Colon. If Campbell progressed enough to challenge for the rg spot in training camp, 2013 will have been one hell of a draft class! Oday at rt also. Even if they just turn into backups after a training camp battle I'd be ok with it. We need depth anyway, but not having draft picks cut from the team after training camp is a nice change of pace. We're gonna have to be patient here cause unless we hit on every single draft pick this year, it's gonna be a long process.
Yes, let's keep signing a washed up OLB who gets coverage/scrap sacks and still has ZERO impact at his position... Let's do it! Let's trade away our best players though...lol Relax, this is just me jabbin' Can't believe there are so many happy people about keeping Pace. You guys keep saying "Cheap" .. While I don't really see anyone other than Peppers or Maybe Tuck (I wouldn't have liked Tuck) We are fine capwise.. So can't really complain here especially when he actually did have 10 sacks... ugh.. I just hope Barnes makes a full recovery because he was playing well.
outside of Woodley, there weren't many OLB's in FA that interested me. signing Pace fills a need, and allows us flexibility in the draft. I would like to see an OLB taken somewhere in the draft, and there won't be any rush to start them too soon with Pace back in the mix. It's a good insurance signing. by the same measure, I'd like to see them sign Colon back as well.
