Was today the first time he's played this season? He made some nice plays on special teams and had a huge tackle today.
No...But his coverage & ability stood out more today. He seems to have very good speed also. Has turned out to be a good late round pick by Jets'
I like what I saw out of him but it is only one game but I'm wondering why I haven't seen our wonderful 3rd round picks out there yet?
I doubt we will see them anytime soon.We do not need them, they are currently not better than the guys we have out there. Our second round pick is inactive and so is Schlagel the third rounder. As far as Smith i don't think he is better than Coleman yet.
I thought both played fairly well in the preseason (especially Smith). Although he has seen a bit of action early I think the improved play of the other safties has kept him on the sidelines. Schlegel is a work in progress, plus he plays a position of strength on this team as well. I wouldn't sell either short just yet, but understand the arguments that there were other directions we could have gone at that point. We will see....
In retrospect yes but O'Callghan's big knock was that he could not stay healthy. Tons of injuries. Pats gamble on him and hes doing great. But as for Drew Colemen a great special teams gunner who was a great pickup in the 6th round.
Not to mention that we already drafted two O-linemen and picked up Teague and Clement as FAs, and had AJ returning to the right side. In hindsight a big, strong, young RT would be helpful right now but I wasn't crying about it at the time....
Don't be surprised if Eric Smith is playing safety next year and E. Coleman isn't. As for Schlegel, I think Mangini and Tannenbaum got blinded by his boar hunting and forgot that the game is football. So far, he's looking like a pretty bad pick. Ryan Myers is playing over Schlegel (granted, maybe because of his special teams ability, but then I would expect a #3 pick to be good enough to start on specials).
Overall, I think that the Jets had a great draft this year. It's hard to second-guess any of their picks EXCEPT their 2 3rd rounders. Those picks made no sense at the time and they still make little sense. Both Schlegel and Smith were HUGE reaches and there were better players available at positions of need. I agree that Manigini and Tannenbaum may have gone overboard on the smart/tough/character thing.
They could have...but then they would have had to hear it from the media and we would have heard it on all of these websites about how dumb it is to pick 3 O-Lineman on Day 1.
