That's fine. No one said that we had to agree. I didn't say Ward wouldn't demand a big contract, I just don't think it will be anywhere near what Byrd is demanding (or will demand) because Ward doesn't have the resume Byrd does.

I disagree with your ratings. Allen has potential, but at this point is only a marginal starter. Ward is one of the best SSs in the game. A more apt upgrade would be from 75 to 96 imo.

I think that would be a great signing. It doesn't have to be a "long term deal" maybe something like 2 years with a third year option and not a boat load of money. It will also allow us to save some money for some other needs and next years free agency when some solid OLB's and DB's will be on the market assuming a handful or so won't be extended.

TJ Ward. He plays in football hell, and yet he was productive in a division that we can't win against.

That's funny, Allen played Brady twice and picked him off. Byrd played him how many times??

While I wouldn't mind adding either of these guys and think they would be an improvement, I also wouldn't be upset if we stood pat and let some of our other guys show if they can improve.

Allen might not be on Byrds level yet but he made some good progress last season with 2 CBs in front of him that were struggling through a good portion of the year.

    A. Allen
    J. Bush
    J. Jarrette

All super young guys that showed promise at one point or another throughout the season. Bring in a vet, maybe bring Reed back as a mentor ( if Rex can swallow some pride and bench him ). But I don't think that we'll be doomed if we don't go out and splurge on this position in FA. I think there are other places much more devoid of talent that we could focus efforts on.

I have to agree with Ajitator .... I thought Allen was really coming on, and heading into his third year could be on the verge of blossoming into a solid NFL starter.

my vote would be Clemons. we need help in the deep middle. someone who can help out our CB's, and make some occasional big plays without breaking the bank (like Byrd).
I'd still look to draft a FS, but we won't need to reach or rush to start them if we bring in Clemons.

Landry is currently our best S. He knows the defense well, and is versatile enough to play either S position.
However i think he's best utilized as a SS. Having him and Clemons would be at least a stable set of safeties, and an upgrade over last year.
Allen showed some potential, but can he put it all together? I think he's good depth for Landry, and maybe in the coming years could surpass him on the depth chart. Based on that, I'm comfortable with Landry and Allen as our SS's. The offseason should focus on FS's (with Clemons and a draft pick being my preference).

Obviously I wasn't comparing the two saying Allen is better, just thought it was funny. I am one of the biggest supporters of going after Byrd as our highest priority signing this off-season. I think him and Allen/Landry would be beautiful and if Cro leaves I would jump on Verner or Talib.
Offensive line is definitely an issue that needs to be addressed.

Ward or Byrd would be nice but i think they might price themselves out..

2nd best option is bringing Reed back AND draft a true FS to learn under him for a year.

  15. While I agree that there are folks who are thinking WAY too cheaply w/ the Jets potential FA targets..Byrd is looking for 10-11 mill a year. That's alot of dough for a safety. I know we'd like to upgrade the position..but we've fielded some damn good defenses w/ the likes of Jim Leonhard & Eric Smith.

that's true, but not having revis means you can't have super elite defenses without good safeties. leonard and smith didn't have to do much with revis and cromartie playing at top tier levels

We DO need to upgrade the safety position, stop thinking we will be okay with what we got there now, that's borderline stupid.

I think Byrd fits our scheme perfectly with many looks having a safety in "center field". Dawan Landry rarely made mistakes back there but the also did not make any plays. As much as a genius as Rex is perceived in terms of defense, the Jets have not gotten turnovers as much as they probably should. When a QB makes a mistake with an inaccurate pass that is over thrown or tips his hand in terms of where he is going to go with the ball, Byrd will make them pay with a turnover. QB's were not scared to throw deep on the Jets last year and the secondary was torched. I believe Byrd makes the whole defense better instantly by making QB's think twice about chucking it down the field, causing them to hold onto the ball longer for a sack or throw it away. I really like Byrd I hope Rex and Idzik can sell him on signing with the Jets and being a star with a playoff team for a reasonable price as opposed to being over-paid somewhere else.

Jets showing strong interest in Verner so if they won't be bringing Cromartie back they really need to up the level of the safeties.

Hmmm... Why was he let go so easily... That's a bit suspect if you ask me.
