sign this beast!! solid depth that shouldnt come at too much of a price tag. short term deal tho. he is 30. 2-3 years max
Know very little about him TBH, Anyone got a decent report? http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/medi...-Micd-Up/afc340a1-1608-4691-b249-3fde11a40e08
Why would he come at not much of a price tag? Players get released for a reason. Could be didn't want to take a paycut. Could be medical. Whatever it is, we can't just assume a former stud is going to be a cheap FA addition. That's almost never the case unless they're old and on a prove it type deal.
Jackson is a great ILB. I had hoped the Jets could/would draft him when he came out of college, but I'm afraid that ship has sailed. The reason he was released is because he had been asked to renegotiate and his agent and the team couldn't agree on a price. He had another excellent season last year leading the team in tackles. He won't be cheap. For what he'd cost, he'd have to start. IMO the only way it would work would be to release Harris and sign Jackson, and the salaries might be a wash, so unless the Jets are willing to take the hit from releasing a fairly popular player in Harris in order to potentially uprade that starting spot for a year or two, I can't see it happening. I can't see it saving the Jets much, if any, cap-wise. It would be a nightmare if the Jets did this, then Jackson got hurt and missed the season.
D'quell would be an upgrade to harris especially in terms of coverage, but between the cap hit it'd cost to cut Harris (around 5 mil in dead money i think), and the cost of signing Jackson (probably another 4-5 million) it would just cost too much. For that kind of money we could sign byrd or ward at safety and sure up our deep ball coverage in the middle of the field where we need the help a lot more than the short/intermediate middle of the field. I agree we need to replace Harris sooner rather than later (I hope this is his last season at least under his current contract). But to replace him with another expensive 30 year old vet who may have already lost a step wouldn't be a wise decision. I hope we draft a replacement for Harris in May and have him sit and learn for a year under Harris.
He was going to be paid 7.4M including his roster bonus. That's not what got him cut. The issue was probably that they couldn't get together on a restructuring of the contract. He was going to count $9.43M against the cap. He was due $4M roster bonus on 3/15. The team saves $8M in cash, $5.233M in cap space
I want one of those 2nd to 4th round linebackers that the Texans seem to find every other year. It can't be that hard to find a good NFL LBer because there are teams that always have those guys even when one of the starters goes down. The Jets just have such piss-poor depth at this point and they have so much trouble finding mid-round guys who turn into stars. Why is that?
Maybe it's because we've repeatedly traded away those picks; and then to address those needs, we've signed aging vets who don't address the need sustainably. Like Jackson.
Harris had a really good season. I'd rather upgrade need positions instead of replacing one of the better players on defense.
I know that Jackson was projected as a 3-4 ILB coming out of college. Hasn't Cleveland been running a 3-4 D alignment?
Depending on his market value I'd love to see the jets throw him an offer. He can play the 4-3 and 3-4. Apparently 7 teams are interested and he's been a high level linebacker for years getting no love bc he's been a Brown. But I wouldn't overpay. We don't need to throw money at a player like him given our other roster needs. Since so many teams are interested I don't see the jets getting into a bidding war.
The guy is very solid. He has played every game the last 3 seasons so no durability questions. A tackling machine. Also has had a good amount of passes deflected the last two years. Something this Jets team lacks is forcing turnovers. As dysfunctional as the Browns are I must admit that they always seem to field a pretty good D. The only question I have is how is his lateral speed. I don't want another David Harris laterally. But I agree that this guy would be a very good pickup.
Didn't realize. That's pretty cheap. Assuming there aren't medical red flags or something else going on.
He's much better in a 4-3 according to PFF: Pro Football Focus %u200F@PFF 1m D’Qwell Jackson -20.2 grade past 2 years, but back in 2011 when in a 4-3 D posted +8 grade. Should interest teams running that front
