You should not get mad at Rex because your mom made you eat those vegetables. Jets won 8 games because of the coaching despite the lack of talent.
Well, if soxxx is right, Rex being here in 2014-15 covers his 6 years. A 1 year extension just didn't make sense after all the theatre and big production the Jets made out of going 8-8. It was just short of a ticker tape parade down broadway but hey, if they like it, I love it. Can't wait... Moving right along.. If under Rex's guidance, the team still continues to tread water in the 6 to 8 win region of the NFL, nothing really changes for better or for worse and life goes on. If they do better, fine. If not, oh well. It's been 45 years now so really, there's no SB expectations and therefore, no pressure on anyone in the Jets organization to do anything other than to be relevant. 2 more years? 3? 5? What difference does it make in the big picture? None whatsoever. We are what our record says we are. We are what our history says we are. We are the New York Jets and believe it or not, 45 years without a SB appearance is also a shining example of consistency. Yes, it's possible to consistently not be a championship contender even in this age of parity. That being said, I'm glad they gave Rex a multi year extension. Anything else would have made the Jet FO look like idiots after all the pomp and circumstance. Now lets see what Rex can do with it. He's already done better as a HC than his dad did record wise AND longevity wise. At least I'm hoping he'll stay off the back pages if nothing else. I have no expectations one way or the other. I'll let time provide the evidence as to the wisdom of the Jet FO. You can argue with opinions, but its hard to argue with results.
I'll have so much fun shoving this down your throat in a year or two. Of course you'll then say that Ryan had nothing to do with it, but that's ok. A dish or crow is still a dish or crow.
I view it in a similar way. We could can Rex but the odds tell us that the guy who replaces Rex does not win a Super Bowl anyway. The other thing I know is that guys who have won the Super Bowl are with there teams for more than five years on AVERAGE. Technically our slim odds get a little better the more years we get into our coaches tenure. Its more likely Rex wins us the Bowl next season than any Rookie Head coach does.
He is very popular with the players. As that is why the President of the Jets resigned him. Over players request!
Isn't the bold because they win a SB so the team keeps them? Coughlin, Tomlin, Bill, McCarthy, Harbaugh, and Payton all won SBs within their first 5 years
In addition to everything else you mention re offense, Rex Ryan makes some of the stupidest in-games decisions that other coaches wouldn't dream of. I remember watching the jets playing Atlanta on Monday night this year. IN THE FOURTH QUARTER the jets had a 6 point lead and were driving down the field. BEFORE THE JETS EVEN SCORED I remember thinking that IF we score a touchdown we better go for 2. A 14 point lead (assuming you convert the 2 point conversation) is a hell of a lot safer than a 12 or 13 point lead. The jets then scored and Rex the idiot KICKS the extra point in the 4th quarter to put us up by 13. Atlanta then rolls to 2 touchdowns (and kicks two extra points) to take the lead. If Geno hadn't gotten us down the field for a last second field goal, we would have lost. It amazes me that a fan like me watching the game in my living room can see the benefit of going for two points in the 4th quarter to get a two-touchdown lead but our $3M coach AT THE GAME can't even figure it out. Rex is a glorified cheerleader. Sure, the players LIKE him because he is everybody's buddy on the team. He does NOT get the most out of his talent (Stephen Hill, Quintin Couples, Brian Winters, Mark Sanchez, Santonio Holmes, etc.) but he makes sure his players LIKE him. You think Vince Lombardi cared whether the players LIKED him? They played damn hard for him though because they respected him. Rex will never be anything more than the glorified cheerleader tattooing numbers to his body, naming team captains who have meltdowns in the huddle, and keeping his job only because the nerdy/loser owner of the jets thinks that Rex is the kind of guy who would protected him from the bullies in high school who stuffed Woody into the locker or stuck his face into the toilet before flushing it.
Your posts are hard to read because they are filled with so much made up bullshit. The best playmaker Rex Ryan has ever been given is Santonio Holmes. That is fucking sad. He's not God, nobody could produce a high octane offense with the talent we have had on that side of the ball since he has been here. If I'm wrong then please direct me to the amazing players we've been so blessed to see run out there on that field every Sunday. As far as the defense I can easily look at the roster, once again, during that spam and see a bunch of old, slow, and terrible contract havin players out there on the field. Yet, Rex's worst stats defensively is 11th since he's been here. It's not possible that when you have 6-7 new starters on a defense that lacks talent everywhere outside of our front, might just struggle a little? It's not possible that when your roster is lacking so much across the board, that maybe, jut maybe, there might be a reason for a decline in stats? Even with that being said, he had proven time and time again that he is an amazing coach on defense and regardless of who he has, he will get the most from them. People like you are so desperate for a SB, you just stop thinking logical and proceed to think desperate. Constant change is all we've known since the last time the Jets have won a SB. That approach has reigned down on us fans for the last 45 years. Obviously that shits not working very well. So what will it hurt to break that cycle am try something different? Honestly? Why not try to build off of pieces that are proven to work and see if this team can improve enough to get over that hump. You would think after not winning a SB the past 45 years, patience would eventually grow on some. Guess not.
Here's the thing. I can't take any poster seriously that is to lazy to hit their ENTER key on their keyboard. I mean, that's lazy. How are you going to expect me to honestly believe that you know more about coaching a football team than Rex Ryan? Again, I hate to bring this up and all, but you are too lazy to hit the enter key on your keyboard. Master that, then chase your dreams of being a HC. One step at a time grasshoppa. Your argument will never make any sense to me, mostly because I got a headache after you basically said you would be a better coach than Rex Ryan. Honestly it about crippled me.
Whether you like Rex or not, it's almost a no-brainer to extend him You can't have a lame duck coach. You wouldn't be able to hire ass't coaches or bring in free agents. And, as some have said, we are more likely to win the SB in the next three years than any new coach we might hire.
Excellent move by the Jets FO. The future is bright in Jets-land. Give it time people. The Jets will be fun to watch for the next few years.
God I hate that crap ^ Coulda woulda shouda....end result, what was the score? Amongst other things football is a game of risk. You sound mightily pissed Bro
It's hard to argue against re-signing him to a new contract now. To think that he took basically a no-name offense that were projected to win 3-4 games this season to an 8-win season is fairly remarkable. Geno Smith looked great at times, but he did struggle. On the other hand, he was a rookie, and there were no weapons for him to throw to. I'm not saying we're settling for mediocrity here. I just think there were some good things that came out of this season for sure. It's something to build on. Though we have not visited the postseason for the last 3 years, Ryan was able to coach us in 6 playoff games - the most of any HC in team history. There just needs to be more elements to make the team stronger and get back to winning. In my own personal opinion, the one thing I'm just not sold on is Marty Mornhinweg. We are freeing up the Sanchez contract. Let's just hope that Idzik is smart and gets us a franchise running back in the second or later rounds of the draft (less $) and keeps beefing up the O-line to protect Smith. Additionally, if this team inserted a balanced running attack along with some weapons for Smith to throw to, there is no reason why we should not win at least 11-12 games and make the postseason. Let's just be hopeful. If we keep adding on the roster, but continue to post mediocre results, then we know that a HC change would be required. But a team is only as good as they were in the last season. Hopefully we continue to move forward and not regress.
Can you stop with this idea that the Jets organization celebrated an 8-8 season like it was a Super Bowl win? You sound like Francessa or Kay. The celebration the we all saw was the PLAYERS reacting to the news that Rex would be back in 2014. I'm sure they were also happy knocking a rival out of the playoffs. Talk about taking things out of context.... The idea that Woody and Idzik went out out on the town, making it rain at the strip club because the went 8-8 is idiotic.
if we win 6 games it will be a complete failure barring half the team being lost to injuries. Nothing short of the playoffs should be a success next year. I know we don't even know what the team will look like but we had loads of cap room and picks and should be able to vastly improve the talent if we make the right decisions. have you seen the healthy roster the last 2 years? 2011 was a major disappointment but the last 2 years we have overachieved by a wide margin. Rex is one of the top coaches in this league, we are lucky to have him and it is great we have rebuilt around him rather than continue the cycle of rebuilding around a new coach every 3-4 years.
They absolutely did celebrate like they won the Super Bowl. Only a koolaid drinking, pompom waving homer would think it was just another win for this team. They didn't pour the champagne and no parade, but that was all that was missing. The year before, there was no such celebration was there? How about the year before that? How many times did the GM come into the lockerroom and scream "This is your coach" Not once. The team missed the playoffs and everybody went on their separate ways. No pomp, no circumstance, no joyous celebration. Nothing but the usual year end speeches. Last guy out? turn off the lights. The 2013 Jets were so happy to be 8-8 and save Rex's job that they made a huge production out of it. Now after all that fanfare, the Owner and the GM (Read FO) had no choice but to come up with a signed and sealed contract that confirmed what that celebration was all about. Hey, if you like it, I love it. Can't wait to see what will happen if by some chance, we go 9-7.
What's the deal on all these "incentives" I'm reading in regards to this extension? This thing sounds like it has all kinds of thresholds that need to be reached.
