I think Idzik was brought in knowing that Rex was Woody's guy and if Idzik didn't want Rex as a coach he probably wouldnt have taken the job. Either way its hard to argue with Woody that Rex didnt deserve an extension.
I agree. Woody is a clueless tool, and I truly hope that he goes bankrupt in 2014 and is forced to sell the team. I despise his stupid ass.
solid move, keeps things quiet for the next season or 2. the only storylines now will be on field related.
Excellent news!! Bringing back Rex with an multi-year extension will take away from the constant talk next year of Rex as a lame duck coach. Smart move by Idzik
I hear you. Yeah, that kind of thought makes me think less of Idzik. I am on record as saying a one year extension was acceptable, mostly because I reverted to simpleminded fandom by virtue of the Jets beating Miami to knock them out of the playoffs. But I don't see how Ryan deserved two.
Excited. A recent 8-8 finish Stability for the coaching staff $50 million in cap space 10 out of 22 starters were either a rookie or a second year pro, one of the youngest teams 8-12 draft picks Geno will no longer be a rookie, he may still throw more picks that touchdowns, but hopefully he'll have improved Brady will be 37 next season. The patriots will soon no longer be the powerhouse that has dominated the AFC East.
I also despise him. If the Jets win an SB while he is owner, it will not be because he is the owner but through some wild combination of factors I really can't see coming together. I hope i am wrong, but I also hope he sells the team yesterday.
yep, glad the bullshit storylines will be kept to a minimum. more importantly though, creates both continuity and stability for this organization. That's important for a consistent draft and FA approach. also does make this team a bit more attractive knowing the coaches will be there, and knowing the players really love those coaches. It's money first for those FA's no doubt, but where things are about equal, I'd want to be a part of something like that as a player.
yep, it's pure coincidence that we have won more consistently since he became owner than at any other point in our history. If only we had Leon hess back so he could fire Pete Carroll and hire Rich Kotite!
Hopefully we will now get on with sorting out the rest of the coaching staff - perhaps this was the reason for the delay all along.
Rich Cimini @RichCimini 10m Ryan's deal not a typical, multi-year extension in terms of gtd money. But it gives perception of long-term commitment/stability. #Jets Rich Cimini @RichCimini 8m Ryan deal a compromise: Ryan cashes in if he wins playoff games, team protected in short term. #Jets Ian Rapoport @RapSheet 13m Source on Rex Ryan’s new extension: “window dressing.” I.E.: short-term extension #Jets wanted, looks like long-term extension Rex wanted
There are a fair number of teams at this point in which the coach is not the GM's hire. It doesn't get publicized a lot, because the hierarchical thing is what people assume to be the norm, but there are very few GM's out there who have strict hire/fire control over the coach. You have to be a really good GM or be GMing for a really bad team to have that kind of control. Most of the GM's have input but not final say. Several coaches have hired the GM also. It's not as simple as it seems on the surface. For an example, if Tom Coughlin had gotten the heave-ho this year that decision certainly would have been made by the Mara's not by their GM. The new hire would also have likely been the choice of the Mara's.
if you look back at SB3, weeb had an assistant named buddy ryan. buddy and walt michaels handled the defense, while weeb and mike holovak handled the offense, with joe willie calling his own plays. but, if you listen to the soundtrack, you can hear weeb suggesting plays to joe during the game. my point is that rex certainly has some faults, but to state that he can't be successful cause he concentrates too much on defense is not correct, and history proves that. rex is like his dad, and the extension I hope means he is more like weeb , but on the other side of the ball.
considering how much money woody had to eat on sanchez and tone alone, even if he changed his mind next year and fires rex, it would still be a bargain with no team cap hit. that is just one reason why idzik is a better gm choice than tanny.
