I'd like to know. If any of you stat junkies out there can find out, pass it along. I'd also be curious as to the year it happened.. Thanks in advance!
I don't know if this is that last time a Jets Qb passed over 50 times, but Vinny did do it in the last game of the 2000 season against the Ravens http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/news/2000/12/24/jets_ravens_ap/
Curtis Martin 18-47, Richie Anderson 1-4, Vinny Testaverde 2-0. Passing Vinny Testaverde 36-69 for 481 yards, 3 INT, 2 TD. Receiving Richie Anderson 11-139, Dedric Ward 8-147, Curtis Martin 8-55, Wayne Chrebet 5-97, Anthony Becht 2-15, Windrell Hayes 1-20, Jerald Sowell 1-8. Tackles (tackles-assists-sacks) Marvin Jones 8-0-1, Shaun Ellis 6-1-0, Mo Lewis 5-2-2, Shane Burton 5-0-1, Victor Green 3-2-0, Roman Phifer 3-0-0, Ernie Logan 2-0-0, Dwayne Gordon 2-0-0, James Farrior 1-0-0, Marcus Coleman 1-0-0, Jason Ferguson 1-0-0, Dorian Boose 1-0-0, Jason Wiltz 1-0-0, Chris Hayes 0-1-0. Fumbles Lost Vinny Testaverde, Kevin Mawae, Richie Anderson Opponent Fumbles Recovered None
Richard Todd was 42 of 60 against the 49ers on 9-21-80. Testaverde was 42 of 63 against Seattle on 12-6-98.
I faintly remember him saying he felt the Jets could do a number on the vaunted Baltimore defense. Groh happened to be correct. The Jets moved up and down the field all day. The problem was Testaverde turning the ball over numerous times and the Ravens scoring on three returns. During the two weeks of bullshit before SB35, writers and Giants fans wanted the Giants offense to play the same way the Jets did against Baltimore.
I confirmed, the 2000 season ender against Baltimore was the last time. Vinny actually put it up 69 times on this day. He threw for 481, 2 TDs and 3 Vinnys. Pennington's highest in any single game was 45, on 11/2/2003 against the Giants (his first game back from his hand injury) and this was an OT game, a full 5 quarters (well basically). He threw for 281, 4 TDs and 2 Vinnys. The most in the Herm Edwards Era was 47 by Vinny on 12/23/01 against Indy in a 29-28 win. He threw for 285 and 2 Tds 2 Vinnys..
Namath was 34 for 62, 398 yards, and 6 Vinnys in 1970 vs. Baltimore. He broke his wrist at the end of the game (not from throwing the football too much).
You guys are onna completely different level! Just for the record, how many times did the Jets actually WIN when we aired it out? For those who are wondering where I'm going with this, look at this season. With no running game worth a damn, how long do you think it will be until Chad has to "air it out" big time to simply stay in a game? The answer I fear is: not long. Welcome to "rebuilding". That netherworld where everything is in question and nothing is as it appears to be. Enjoy the ride folks.....
You've got a good point--in fact most times when a QB throws for over 300 yards his team loses. However, with Vinny and O'Brien and Todd and Namath we had vertical offenses with a lot of points but also a lot of mistakes. With Chad under center it's more of a short passing ball-control game. I think there are a lot of reasons why the Jets won't win this year but relying on the pass doesn't necessarily mean we won't. The Patriots won two Superbowls with a weak running game and a pass-oriented, ball-control offense (not comparing us to those teams of course, which had dominant defenses).
All those games mentioned here were losses, EXCEPT the '98 Seattle game. That was the phantom TD game...can it count as a win?
12-3-67 62 passes Broncos 33, Jets 24 10-18-70 62 passes Colts 29, Jets 28 9-21-80 60 passes 49ers 37, Jets 27 9-6-98 58 passes 49ers 36, Jets 30 in OT 12-6-98 63 passes Jets 32, Seahawks 31 12-24-00 69 passes Ravens 34, Jets 20 There are additional games where they threw over 50 passes. I could provide a full list before the week is out. All I would need is some free time.
