Ivory is automatic for 5-6 yards if he gets 1 yard inside the LOS. But that rarely happens with this patchwork line.
Dude doesn't go down. He's not the fastest guy, but he's got the vision to take a long one at any time. All he needs to get yards is to get back to the LOS, and the line could barely get him that. Give him some type of hole.. anything.. and he gets enough yards.
This line's performance is average, but the talent & ability is there. I think they are getting beat more by the scheme than one on one mismatches. They aren't recognizing the LB blitzes, nor picking up the outside CB blitzes. Perhaps either Geno or Mangold can do a better job of reading pre-snap so the OL can do a better job of picking up the blitzers? To many times the guards will help out a tackle only to leave a lane open for a blitzing LBer or an End coming around on a stunt. The OL has to read & react better. More film studying?
The offensive line looked horrendous yesterday. Ferguson got beat a lot, I saw howard get beat. The others weren't getting any push.
They've been pure horseshit since Woody retired. Only guy with any consistency AKA hasn't been called out for dumbshit play is Mangold. Everyone else sucks. Sometimes the QB doesn't have a second to throw because they leave a DE on the left side unguarded. Pure horse manure
The OL is the biggest weakness on this team and is what is killing the team. Of the 10 games we have played we have given the QB time to throw the ball in only 4 games. Both NE games, Atlanta and the 1st Buffalo game. The other 6 games our QB has been killed all game with little to no time to throw the ball. Compare the results. Of the 4 games we have protected the QB Smith had 3 very good games with the 4th game being played in a driving rain storm where both teams receivers dropped 6+ passes. The common link here is when we protect the QB we move the ball, we score points, we limit turnovers and we win. When we do not protect the QB we get games like Tenn, Pitt, Buffalo2 and Cincinnati. Improve the protection and we can be a playoff team. Continue the poor protection and we are very lucky to be a 7 win team.
When the line gives the QB a bit of time, we go up the field with ease. Definitely need to fix this issue before anything else.
I agree with all you said and want to add that Mangold has not been a rock in the middle either. Colon has been ok but not great. Howard is our best lineman by far at this moment. Too many armchair GMs and Sanchez fan boys yell to dump Geno but fail to state which NFL QB could complete passes while on his back?
well Geno doesn't see the safeties or lbs coming (much like Sanchez) so the oline has no chance. The defense doesn't respect the QB, hence aggressive play leading to oline looking like sh*t. I am convinced this oline would be sufficient for a moderately good QB.
Warmack isn't killing it in Tennessee like many people think he is. I rather have Larry Warford than any other rookie. Before the draft I had us taking him in the second, but obviously Geno dropped to us and that was a better value pick. I just wish we would of traded up using one of the later rounds.
This. I don't think our o-line is nearly as bad as some people think. Not top 5 obviously, but definitely middle of the pack. Most of the pressures and sacks have come on blitzes, or have been due to Geno holding the ball for 3+ seconds.
First of all it should be obvious that Smith's defenders will dump on the OL. Especially because, at least not yet, dumping on the OC has not become standard for excuse making. But you are correct, the OL looks bad because teams are blitzing with success since Smith cannot get the ball out quickly enough. He holds the ball too long. Watch the other team's qb if you don't watch any other NFL games. Smith seems to think he has all day to throw back there. He is making the OL look bad. Having said that, Winters is a rookie, and sometimes Mangold and Ferguson look bad since they are covering for him. Colon has been fairly solid, although he's gotten a couple of penalties lately. Howard has been mostly good but had a rough game against Buffalo's blitz. I wouldn't place too much stock in one game, though. I would not say top five, but perhaps around ten is right. Maybe 8. Fans here don't see bad OL's enough to know them.
The Jets OL has been very bad most of this year. We have not been able to run the ball with either pass catching TE's on the field and our pass protection has been very poor. It's not a surprise to me that we actually ran the ball pretty well when both of our "pass catching" TE's were sitting out.
