This is something that's been bugging me for some time, and I'm sure it bothers those that have watched football long enough to remember Belichick in Cleveland. He's always been known as a defensive genious, he and Parcells put together some damn good defenses in NY and won two Super Bowls with the Giants. In Cleveland, aside from 1 good year, his teams were pretty awful, and the defenses were nothing to write home about either. They were decent at times, but not dominant. Even as our defensive coordinator, he was never able to build a legendary defense. With all of his attention focused on D, he was able to build a better one than Cleveland, but still we weren't dominant, and he couldn't put together a Super Bowl calibre D either. So all of a sudden he bolts to NE, and after a bad year....poof, all of a sudden he become coach of one of the NFL's greatest dynasties. Sure a lot of it has to do with luck, they did lose that Raider game and had no business in the SB in 2001...but still. How much credit does he deserve. He's not an offensive coach, the offensive they're running is Charlie Weis' offensive, Tom Brady is Charlie Weis' quarterback. The defense is great, but where the hell was this D in Cleveland? Where was it with us? I feel what you'll start to see this year and definitely next year, will be the slow disintegration of the Patriots to what the Browns were in the early 90's. Belichick has lost too many of his special helpers, the last being Mangini (which really peeved him) and as more and more of the old Parcells gang deserts him, he's going to become more exposed. Not necessarily as a fraud, but as a coach that's far from legendary. I still say that Weis deserves at least 50% of the credit for NE's dynasty. That team had two head coaches, not one. Belichick completely deferred to Weis like Walsh, Noll, Shula, Levy, and Jimmy Johnson never would.
Bill Belichick might be an anti social turd................. That being said, to not give him the proper credit for coaching and helping build a team with a 5 year run as good as any, ever, is borderline nuts at best, shear stupidity at worst. He is a great coach that hates the Jets, its organization, its coach, its fans, its personal etc. etc. etc. please lets move on. Mangini is "our" coach, I happen to think he will be a good one, so who gives a rats ass about Belichick.
the most noticeable difference between all those jobs, including Cleveland and the new england job is that he has final say on personel in NE, this is where the Patriots have really overachieved, in drafting and picking up for cheap players who contribute.
Yeah, picking his players is pretty critical. If Belicheck is only where he is because of luck then he is the luckiest SOB on the planet. Sure they shouldn't have beaten the Raiders in the tuck game, but who cares? They went on to win the title 2 more times. As for Weis, doesn't Belicheck deserve credit for picking the best candidate available and letting him do his job and run the offense? All great coaches had fantastic coordinators aiding their success (Ditka had Ryan, Johnson had Wannstedt, etc.)
I understand if you don't like him, but atleast respect him. He deserves credit for being an absolutely oustanding coach. Luck only takes you so far..
This thread gives me an excuse to post links to a 4-part in depth history of Belichick in Cleveland, from a heartbroken Cleveland fan's perspective. I found it last night when I was amusing myself by looking for dirt on Belichick. Sorry for not pasting in the entire 4-part article. It's long, so kick back with some milk and cookies or something... http://www.thephatphree.com/features.asp?StoryID=200&SectionID=2 http://www.thephatphree.com/features.asp?StoryID=199&SectionID=2 http://www.thephatphree.com/features.asp?StoryID=198&SectionID=2 http://www.thephatphree.com/features.asp?StoryID=197&SectionID=2
Look guys every coach is the best when they win and that goes all the way down to 7 year old peewee football. Start losing and you dont know what you are doing youre a big dope all of a sudden its all about the talent you have and how you use it . just wait the patriots will start to stink and they will be talking about what a great team they had not how BB was so great and now he is dumb. yes he deserves credit but so does cower for last year is he a genius all of a sudden? at least he is likeable and dosent look like he ate a spoonfull of sh** all the time.
Belichik is the best coach in the history of the NFL at making halftime adjustments on defense. He is one of the best in NFL history at adjusting defensive players on the fly during a tight sequence. He is one of the best at getting a totally unexpected performance out of otherwise mediocre players. He has a lot of flaws, but there's no question that the combination of his strengths also makes him one of the NFL's greatest coaches ever. The fact that he has won 3 super bowls with Tom Brady at QB is living proof of that. I'm a huge Michigan fan and I *know* that Brady is not that good.
Tom may not have looked that good in college, but he's looking mighty good in the NFL. Yes Belichick is a great coach, but alot of his success is linked to Tom Brady's emergence as a real deal great NFL quaterback. He's won a two superbowls with antoinne smith as his leading rusher and troy brown as his leading receiver. That's impressive.
In 1998 we were 2nd in poitns allowed(1 pt behind the leader), we had a big time D and in '99 our D carrid us late in the year to get to 8-8. In 3 years w/ us we were 6th, 2nd and 9th in points allowed. The 3 years prior to his arrival we were 29th, 26th and 15th.
I’ve been bitching about this for years but all I hear is how great he is. Here is how I see it however: 1) He was horrible in Cleveland 2) He takes nearly the entire staff that Parcells put together with the Jets and bolts to England 3) He sucks still and the players hate him 4) Bledsoe goes down and what I think will turn out to be one of if not the GOAT quarterback falls into his lap 5) He’s a genius No Brady – Bellifraud is fired after season two (3 – 13) with the Pats. Give me a break guys…there was a time when people thought Shannahan was a good coach…
Just like Big Bill, Little Bill had a great supporting staff. Charlie Weis, Romeo Crennell, Eric Mangini, etc. That being said, Bellicheck really knows his Xs and Os.
The thing about great coaches is that they come and go. All of them were like that at one point or another. Sure, some may have been tough for a number of years and always fielded competitive teams, but the dynasty fades in time and all that remains is their former glory.
Belichick drew up the defensive gameplan for the Giants in 1990 on the flight down to Tampa where they were to face the famed K-gun offense. As history now tells us, it was an unorthadox gameplan that centered around knocking Thurman Thomas off his routes as the entire offense fed off of Thurman. Belichick's scratch pad gameplan is now on display at the Hall of Fame in Canton. Belichick then went on to implement the same gameplan against St. Luois in 2001 as the entire Rams offense was a timing based offense that once again centered around Marshall Faulk. the guy knows a hell of a lot about football and very little about social nuance and public relations. Mangini was starting the car on cold morning's for Belichick back in Cleveland when Belichick gave him his start. So before anyone goes too far in knocking Belichick down remember who groomed the very coach you now hold in such high regard and stake your future football hopes to...
yea but who groomed Belichick....Parcells....so it's still the "Big Bill" influence that's steering that Jets as well as the Patriots.
Parcells - Number of Bowls w/out Belichick 0 Belichick - Number of Bowls w/out Parcells 3 Numbers don't lie.....
