Simms is still an unproven commodity. Yes people speculate he might be better than Geno Smith (there was that report, months ago about people in the Jets org wanting Simms to get the job) but we still don't really know if he can protect the ball any better than Geno...or if he has any pocket awareness himself.. We have David Garrard here. Yes he hasn't played in a while but if there's one thing I can guarantee Garrard won't do, it's go 8-25 with 3 picks and a fumble lost. He was never a massive playmaker, but he always took care of a football a heck of a lot better than Geno (or Sanchez) Going into Baltimore I'd be a lot more confident with a battle tested Garrard under center than anybody else.
this and this. I'm sure he's getting practice reps and if they felt he was into the playbook enough and healthy enough to start he would. but really he's nothing but a good voice and plan C, unless something unforeseen happens he's not likely to come on the field for the jets, he's never even been activated.
No kidding...career threatening hits?? No....this guy is the wrong kind of hit away from never walking again...his knees are bone on bone man...STRICTLY a mentor and that is it.
If they wanted him to be a mentor they should have hired him as a coach instead of wasting a roster spot on him.
1. Gerrard is the third string QB, he does not get to leapfrog over the second string QB. 2. Gerrard is not the future, he is ancient. 3. Gerrard is more of an assistant coach than a player at this point. Geno is still the starter for some reason (pact with the devil, Rex's wife's other tattoo, etc.). When he fails Simms is on deck. If Simms fails you may get your wish and the Gerrard era will last all of less than six games before he retires.
Because Simms has more potential, and if he shows something good he will provide a spark for the future, where as Garrard isn't going to be around for much longer and one sack from retirement. Might as well get Simms some experience and see what he is capable of, if he can't do it, then the Jets need to seriously look at a viable QB option via FA or draft (2nd or 3rd round QB) to compete with Geno, kid needs a push.
If Garrard is physically able to go out there and play he would make a lot more sense to consider, rather then Simms. This team is competing for a playoff spot.
Peyton Manning is one good hit away from a wheel chair with a ventilator for life. He should be moved to 3rd string immediately but allowed to mentor the next guy up....heck maybe they should bring Tebow back to be mentored. If Garrard is really here 'just' to mentor Geno, then they could have given him a desk and a whistle and saved the roster spot. No, Garrard is on the team to play.
Lmao where did you get your information regarding Peyton Manning's injury, because your way off. He had a pinched nerve essentially, nothing to do with his spine. The biggest worry with Peyton was whether he would ever regain his arm strength not would he walk again dipshit.
I agree with this. I argued to start Kellen Clemons back when Sanchez was god awful and everyone screamed stick with Sanchez. My philosophy is start 'em until you see something good and consistent. Also in the Bills game when I saw Geno go down after the first hit I thought we should have kept Geno out for at least a quarter to test Simms out with good reason (geno got hit and rattled hard.)
I would agree that GENO has to sit before he totally loses his confidence. But I doubt any QB could play well under the circumstances he plays under with the Jets. For starters the scheme is old and worn. run, run, gasp and pass when everyone knows its coming. Then we have an inadequate OL. No QB can take a beating game after game. Garrard has never had to play a season with 17 different receivers catching the ball. So much for anticipation and knowing where the receiver will be. I would play Garrard over Simms if they do sit Geno down. By half time you will be calling for geno.
