Well... we lost to our arch rivals, and two mistakes were key contributors to the loss.... one was a coaching mistake, combined with a bad play call that led to a Patriots' TD and the other was on Ben.... he shanked one, and it cost us. Both mistakes gave the Patriots very good field position, and both times, they scored TD's on us. The good news is that our boys never quit. They did their best, and actually had a small chance at the end, after being down 24-0.

This was perhaps Graham's worst day in the NFL.

    1. The Jets were at their own 46 yard line, and Ben got off a 40 yard punt (49 yards from the spot he kicked from) and the hang time was a respectable 4.5 seconds, but the distance should have been longer. The hang time was good though, and the Patriots only returned it one yard, from the 16 to the 17. We have been spoiled.... Graham usually would have gotten it another 8 or 9 yards longer, inside the opponents' ten yard line. Still, it counts for an "inside the twenty" stat.... something the NFL tracks. Net 39 yards. (The official NFL site has the numbers wrong on this punt). Mine are accurate. Grade: B

    2. The Jets were on the NE 47 yard line, and Graham kicked this one to the NE 11 yard line, with no return. The hang time was really good at 4.8 seconds and 36 yards. The returner had to signal for a fair catch at his own 11 yard line because the ball hung so long. Very good punt here.... Grade: A

    3. Very much like punt #2.... at the NE 46, 4.7 second hang time, fair catch at the NE 11 yard line. Grade: A

    4. With only 1:08 left in the half, a decent punt here would let the Jets get into the locker room at halftime down 10-0. Ben's worst punt as a Jet. He shanked it badly. From the Jets' 40 yard line, it went out of bounds at the fifty, for a ten yard punt. NE was able to take advantage, and score another TD because, in large part, due to Ben's whiff. He wasn't under any punt rush pressure... he just missed it. This one really hurt. Grade: F

That was Ben's last punt. That has to be bothering him a lot. Generally, most punters will miss one badly like this during the course of the year. This was a bad spot for Ben's bad one, against our arch rivals. Still, it isn't all on Graham here.... our defense failed to answer the call and pick up a team mate.

    Ben's overall grade: C-

That one bad punt..... the punting game is largely ignored in the NFL.... but this is an example of just how important it is. One bad mistake can have a significant affect on the outcome of the game, as it was here.

Thanks TBird for the honest assesment.

I guess he kicks 70 decent punts in a season that are quickly forgotten but we will all remember the one shocker. It wont happen again, i hope.

What you are describing here is a 38-yard punt with a net of 37 yards.

(I taped the game and could go back and look at this particular punt. I also could go to www.nfl.com and see what the stats say.)

It's kind of like the officiating.. They make 99% of the calls perfectly, and noone notices, but when they F one up big time in a big spot, everyone goes crazy... His punt that went out of bounds 21 yards from the spot he kicked it at hurt, but he's still the best punter we've had in ages.

Here you only noted 4 punts. Graham actually punted 5 times. I also don't understand #1 as I noted a few minutes ago. Also, Graham only had one returned and I believe it was returned for six yards by Kevin Faulk. Troy Brown fair caught three. The fifth punt went out of bounds. I could be mistaken, but I believe that is the way it went down.

Great work TBJ! I really picked up on the intensity and the rivalry on this game, especially with the hatred the NE coach has for the Jets. Also with NE having the wood over the Jets. The Jets certainly gave NE a massive scare & if not for some bad errors, the game could of ended with a different result.

I watched a highlights tape and that TD by Coles was sheer guts. But the one that really impressed me was that hit that Cotch took and then got up and ran for a TD. Exciting stuff!.....I think I'm on my way to being hooked on this game.

I hope the Jets continue to give value for money and that they take it out on the Bills big-time this week.

You are correct, Graham kicked 5 times, not 4, as the report said.

Also, only one punt was returned, as you noted as well, by Faulk, for 6.

Here is the log of graham's actual punts:
    1st quarter
    1) 4-4-NYJ46 (11:36) B.Graham punts 42 yards to NE 12, Center-J.Dearth. K.Faulk to NE 18 for 6 yards (D.Coleman, M.Chatham).

    2) 4-2-NE47 (2:28) B.Graham punts 36 yards to NE 11, Center-J.Dearth, fair catch by T.Brown

    2nd quarter
    3) 4-4-NE46 (9:02) B.Graham punts 34 yards to NE 12, Center-J.Dearth, fair catch by T.Brown.

    4) 4-2-NE46 (3:25) B.Graham punts 37 yards to NE 9, Center-J.Dearth, fair catch by T.Brown.

    5) 4-17-NYJ40 (1:08) B.Graham punts 10 yards to 50, Center-J.Dearth, out of bounds.

Those looking for big booming punts from graham, note the field position he was kicking from. Graham had a good day getting NE pinned down. 4 of his 5 punts landed inside the 15. Of course, you'd like them around the 5, but this is still better than a touchback.

That's because 2004 is on another fishing trip. He said he thinks these BG reports are worthless, and he still won't admit that the punter's foot makes contact with the ball NINE yards behind the line of scimmage! So he's here with the sole purpose of being a troll. This guy simply cannot admit when he's wrong about ANYTHING, even when he's proven wrong beyond any shadow of a doubt. I, having admitted I am not God, did make a mistake here.

Yep, I missed a punt. That makes me 82 out of 83. I was in a bit of a rush last night, and this report is clearly not my best effort. Sue me! :shit:

there was an american guy on sports radio in melbourne today giving a recap of the latest sports news from the usa and the main sport talked about was nfl but no one cared about QB's or RB's everyone just wanted to know how the jets went and how many punts ben graham had

the american guy then said people in the usa would look at us funny if we went along to a game to watch the punter

FFS, lets just call it 10 yards from the LOS and get this petty shit over with. That guys foot plants at the 23 and a half and the contact with the ball is a little over the 24.

I can live with that, but I've been saying that for a while now... LOS 34, kick spot I can see as the 24 (no closer), and the plant foot on the 23, or just beyond it.

I love this argument. It's great how 2 yards can get 2 people so worked up!

Hey, in some contexts a difference of two inches can get two people worked up!
