I have to admit, after reading this post I didn't know if you were shitting on Jeff, or happy that he's getting a shot.
I don't think he's shitting on Cumberland. It seems like not only is he getting a shot here but he's actually going to get some opportunities to make plays out there. It would be nice if he can become a big time TE because the talent has been there with the size and speed element that he brings to the table.
If you have a TE capable of blasting up the right seam it makes things very difficult for the free safety. He winds up with too many calls to make between the SE and the TE and gets burned.
With a number 2 QB throwing to him. Guy gets vertical, with ease. Is he going to put up Gronkowski numbers. No. But if he had ten primary target plays, hed catch about 5 balls 50-80 yards a game. Between the Jets 20, and the opponents 40, and inside the 10 in 11 personnel.
I wasn't shitting on Jeff. Actually, I think he's the best TE on the team, and a really good TE at that. Unfortunately for him he's been buried behind a torn achilles (2011), Keller and now Winslow. But fortunately for us, with the few shots he's had this year he's produced big time, 18yrds/catch (#1 in the AFC), 2 TDs, a very good blocker, 6'-4" 260lbs and runs a 4.4-4.5, which makes him REALLY fast. Too fast to be covered by LB's and most Safeties (as seen by his last TD catch), and too big and strong for most DBs (he's no Gronk, but think Gronk). None of us have seen tons of him, but what we have seen tends to be pretty good. Now that he's the #1 TE for the Jets, we'll get to see a lot more of him. Add Jeff Cumberland to the small but growing list of undrafted FAs that's coming up big for the Jets.
Cumberland has been pretty darn good ALL season so far. I look for him to have a huge day against the depleted and decrepit can't stop a nosebleed Douchebag Defense tomorrow at Met Life CAN'T WAIT
Most teams have 2 TEs....a blocker and a pass catcher. Since the day he walked onto Jet Turf, Jeff Cumberland and been the #2 TE, the 'blocker'. And at 6-4,, 260lbs, he's been a solid blocker. No OC ever creates plays for their #2 blocking TE. Yes, he may be the 5th option on every pass play, kind of like a blocking FB, but he could go 3 games and never get targeted. Or if he does it's a last second throw out of desperation that goes almost anywhere but in his hands. Cumberland was a stud receiver at Illinois ('stud' because of his size and speed) before converting to pass catching TE. He didn't set the world on fire and went undrafted, but his receiver roots are strong. He has EXCELLENT hands. There are TEs who have better hands and TEs who are better blockers, but Cumberland has a rare combination of both. Plus his big and really fast. Really? Who knows. He's been a walk-on buried on the Jets. But now for the first time he's the #1 TE and will get 100 times more play time with Geno in practice and MM will examine his strengths & weaknesses and device Cumberland specific plays, and more than one or two per game. I know when Keller went down last year Jeff was there but between training camp being over, Sparano 'creating and calling' the plays, and Sanchez tossing the rock nothing great developed. Maybe this time will be different. I'd love it as much as you if Cumberland out-plays the Gronk tomorrow.
You literally can't make any post without linking it back to Geno/Sanchez. We're trying to talk about Jeff ****ing Cumberland, and somehow it goes back to Geno/Sanchez.
yes he literally can't but he barely referenced it so I'll take that all day. Instead of taking the bait and shining a spotlight bringing attention to it, just dismiss it like you would a whiney child.
With the lack of talent on offense, Jeff might have to wait until the Jets upgrade their skill positions to get more open looks in the offense, Hill or Kerley don't command a ton of respect of the defense, the Jets don't create mismatches for the opposing defense to worry about too much,
