Granted we have a top-rated defense but I have some issues with our Def backfield. Were #1 in rush dee & 13th is pass dee. While being 13th in pass d is NOT all that bad, I noticed too many missed assignments in coverage, rec'vrs left wide open, lack of anticipation on pass routes, etc. I know this core is basically learning how to play as a unit & will suffer "bumps & bruises" along the way, I'm just concerned how the 2nd'ary is defending the pass that well. I'm not hung on the lack of INT's, but more on the lack of "passes defensed". Do you think this might be a major concern as the season progresses? What "remedies" can be implemented to improve this unit?
I dont necessarily have concerns. I know what Cro is. Hes s top 5 shutdown corner in this league. I know what Wilson is. Hes a guy who was drsfter higher than he was supposed to be and is a decent Nickel guy who when plays too much gets exposed. The unkown of Walls and Milliner dont have me concerned just tak8ng a wait and see approach.
Cro is very hit or miss. Any time he's having an off day, he just gets lazy and holds the ever loving hell out of WRs, which ends up costing us big.
Just about every team in the NFL has concerns about their secondary, except Tampa Bay, who is currently 0-4, and Seattle, who is also very strong up front. Defenses are built from the inside-out and we have arguably a top 3 front 7 this year.
Fair point. Still a top 5 corner. He has the ability to shut down big play guys. And there arent too many db's who can do that.
Cro is either not healthy or aging. He is not what he was last year. Could be the hamstring could be something else. Just know that he is not shutting people down like he did. Walls seems to be someone who can turn into a really, really good player. Has great technique. Needs to work on anticipation, watching receiver's eyes, stuff you can really only learn from experience. And of course, his hands. Wilson is clueless. He is slightly better clueless this year than previous but I'd still be much happier if we had someone to replace him. Will that be Milliner? We can only hope. Bottom line, a secondaries best friend is a pass rush. QB running for his life or on his back is not going to make many throws.
Life without Revis. Cromartie has to lift his play up. Walls has actually been a nice addition to our secondary. Wilson is what he is, decent in slot coverage but makes some bonehead plays. Landry is solid and Jarrett and Allen have actually done a decent job. There is just no "elite" player back there. Hopefully Milliner turns into the player the coaching staff thinks he is. Him and Cromartie will make a great starting CB tandem. Basically it's just an average secondary, but thats what happens when you have mainly average players back there. The only one who is an above average player in Cromartie but he hasn't played like it yet.
Don't know how many corners in the league that can shutdown Julio Jones one on one. Most are at least getting safety help over the top.
I think it still early we have a young secondary, let them learn. I believe the coach will get his guys where they should be. I know he doesn't wanna feel like the weakest link on this staff. Secondary has made plays just hasn't, Completed plays. (Drops)
Milliner is the X Factor. If he's good, our secondary will be very good. If he's average, then we're just Ok.
You can't play pass defense in this league anymore. That's how they want it. Outside of Vintage Revis ... And who knows if we'll see that again ... It doesn't matter who you have in the secondary. The pass can't be adequately defended by today's rules. If you want to stop a team in the last two minutes you better turn them over, or they're probably going to score. Just look at all the one score games in the league each week and count how many times the trailing team ends the game on downs. It rarely happens. I had very little doubt that the Falcons were scoring on that last drive. IMHO the NFL has ruined their own game. More and more it's become a case of whoever has the ball last wins. 100 out of 100 times, I'd rather be trailing by 2 with the ball in the last two minutes over leading by 2 and playing defense. Up by 6, I feel slightly better on D, but even then you're at a clear disadvantage against a decent offensive team who has 4 downs to get 10 yards.
>Shutdown >8 Catches for 99 yards, plus a couple PI calls on Cro The only way he shut him down was by giving him a season ending injury at the end of the game.
I expected this with #24 gone. Where kinda weak at safety, corner is solid but Milliner not being healthy and not being up to speed has hurt a little. When the time comes we need a play maker at safety and maybe another corner, do that and we will be beastly with out front line.
Cro blanketed Julio on almost every play he covered him, and the long catch was absolutely amazing on Julio's part. Cro didnt injure him, it just happened. And if I remember correctly, there were a few plays where Julio made a catch and Cro wasnt covering him- Cro was playing zone in flat (or at least passed off Julio to cover the flat), and Julio made a corner catch in front of Josh Bush, and 2 drags that were (I believe) the linebackers responsibility. Thats what I remember at least.
I think overall our pass defense has been pretty good. Our top 10 pick in Milliner has been out for the last couple of weeks so there's that. I think the only thing truly missing is a ballhawk. Aside from not getting the interceptions, they have been solid.
Part of the problem here is that we're used to watching Revis play. Cromartie will get his feet back under him, Milliner will improve with his health and experience, and Walls will be a good-not-great backup. And I guess Wilson can still cover the slot for a while. I really hope they find it in their hearts to draft a FS in the 3rd round or so next year. Allen does a pretty good job in run support, but I haven't been too impressed with Landry or Jarrett this year. The bottom line is that it would be nice for the safeties to help a little bit more against the pass.
The Bucs have the best secondary in the NFL right now. Where has that gotten them? You win the game by scoring. Keeping the other team from scoring is a nice general prophylactic against losing but how many times recently have you seen a good offense fall short at home in the 4th quarter when they needed to score? The Falcons lost that game last night because they scored too quickly after getting the ball with 5:41 to go. They did this even though they were playing a short passing game as their main offense.
I disagree to a certain extent.... Tho' Def backfields are "hand-cuffed" by several NFL rules governing contact" hits/hand-ch'king/so-called holds (remember when a perfectly timed hit to a rec'vr upon the arrival of a pass was deemed a "great play"? now it's called a hit against a defenseless recvr), I'm concerned with the lack of CBs/Safetys lack of skill "playing the ball" rather than the rec'vr. As I've stated several times b-4, the lack of anticipation; reading the qb; etc. ....Play the ball that's all..........! Jus' sayin'......what the heck do I know....!hmy:
Remember that the jets have 3 new starters in the defensive backfield and 7 new starters on D. It's truly amazing what they've accomplished given how many new starters they have. They need a little time to gel and they'll be lights out. I expect them to truly hit their stride in the 2nd half of the season. The backfield has had some issues, but they'll resolve themselves. Millner needs to get more time in games to become the player he can be, but the jets need to get him health so he can play in games. It'll come, you just need to be a little patient.
