Pennington, Barlow and Coles will never be mistaken for Kelly, Thomas and Reed (and have not been playing together that long). Add to that an inexperienced offensive line and the no huddle makes even less sense. There is no element of surpise if you do not have the skilled players to execute an offense which requires quick thinking and cohesiveness.
I have no problem with growing pains during a rebuildng year. It seems painfully obvious to me that the Jets aren't going to participate in the postseason if they continue to have to play teams that don't suck as much as the Titans. Best they make their mistakes now.
No huddle has nothing to do with this. We're moving the ball a little. Our D can't stop squat though.
I've been impressed w/ the way we are playing. It may not show on the scoreboard...but we have alot of young players who are perfomring well.. - Justin Miller has had good coverage all game and has made some nice tackles -Rashad moore is really clogging up the middle - D rob has struggled at NT, but when at DE has had some nice penetration - Brick is really holding his own on the blindside - AJ is playing at LG and has shown some good athleticism for the spot - B Smith continues to cause fear in defenses It looks like we have a solid foundation...what we need is more playmakers! Stay tuned.
I dunno. Our O-line is looking pretty porous at times, and our defense is getting walked on. Ben Graham shanked a punt. I know most of you are saying we don't look that bad, but when you look at the scoreboard it's 17-0 at the half. This is not to say we look pathetic, but if we score as much in the next half as we did in this one that's what we'll be.
Once the second half started it was a no-brainer to use the no-huddle down 24-0. But why start the game with it? Jet "D" was dead tired in 4th quarter on NE's last drive (15 plays, 63 yds, 8 min, 3 first down conversions). Don't you think this so-so defense can use all the help they can get by the Jets running the clock a bit and giving them a bit of a breather? It's just the start - what happens in the second half of the season when this defense is on the field way too much because of the Jets no-huddle and low time of possession numbers? The only sustained drive the Jets "O" had was 10 plays 25 yards. And when they finally made it into the red zone, they proceeded to go in reverse. It's bad enough that Jets' running game is a no-show. The no huddle for the entire game will just compound their problems. Note: New England has won 17 out of their last 19 against AFC East opponents.
I think we should go for the no-huddle, and take advantage of Chad's intelligence and accuracy. With the no-huddle, the defenses can't make substitutions, and since we aren't really that great personnel wise, we don't want them to matchup and beat us down even more from a personnel standpoint. It doesn't help us, but it helps them. The Colts use the no-huddle a lot too, and it seems to work for them.
Defenses aren't supposed to get tired until the end of the game. If the no huddle is working, and our defense is playing well, that means we're scoring points and they're not, and we're running up a lead. Once we have the lead, we can get out of the no-huddle and start wasting clock, and our defense gets to play the pass and rush the QB. This is a much better idea than our current plan of not scoring any points until the 4th quarter, and the defense being too tired to stop anyone by then.
People seem to forget also that this defense is GOOD. Sure, the Jets offense got stymied at times in this game but it was against arguably the most intelligent D in the league.
That doesn't change the fact that Schottenheimer sort of seemed to come unglued in the 4th quarter (a lot of oddly timed runs, most notably the 1st and 10 QB sneak, and an inexplicable aversion to throwing to the sidelines at the end of the game.)
Were we watching the same game? 17 points came out of that no huddle. Peronsally I think it was a brilliant move.
Pennington's strength isn't exactly sideline outs. If we threw balls to the sidelines, chances are they would have been jumped and pick6ed
If Pennington can't throw to the sidelines with a minute to play and no timeouts remaining, then the coaching staff has to bring in a QB who can.
Actually, an insurmountable 24-0 deficit and an exhausted 4th quarter defense came out of the no-huddle. Very brilliant. Did they use the no huddle against Tennessee in Week 1? I didn't watch that game either. Point is this team does not have the skilled "O" personnel for the no-huddle (like Indy does). Where is the 1,200 yard 50 reception running back, who is essential in running such an offense?
