Wilson was awful. We need a punt returner. ST is too important, it wins games.

I didn't have a problem with that so much as Wilson catching the ball and just standing there waiting to get hit or slipping on the turf. Too much horizontal running. Run forward and get the couple yards, don't risk losing 5+ to make a big play when it fails.

Didnt we cut Joe mcNight, At least he ran with the ball. ST could have helped a lot more last night. Can keep having our rookie starting at the Fracking 10 yard line.

Not having a returner when they kicked out of their own end zone cost us points. Period. That decision was so bad I can’t comprehend it.

Why didnt they see this coming, I saw this coming. Yeah this did cost us the game, Blame the WR all you want. But its a game of field position and RIGHT NOW WE SUCK AT IT.

The WR's directly cost us at least 13 points, probably more like 17. Geno cost us at least 3. How many did the ghost punt returner cost us?

By your logic it cost us as least 3 points. A better question is "how many points did not having a returner earn us"?

There are times when you can go without a returner. When the other team is punting from their own endzone isn't one of them unless its a really short shap and your willing to give up the great field position to attempt a block.

Either that or he fair catches with no one in sight. Has he ever gained more than 4 yards on a punt return?

Yeah when you want the punt to roll 30 yards for a 70 yard punt

I'm surprised so many of you are confused by the thought process.

it was pouring rain, NE has a rookie Punter, and we really needed a big play.
On top of that, we had our backup punt returner back there who is not dependable in the least, and has good potential to fumble in the rain.

Add it all up, and it was a decent calculated risk to rush the Punter.
btw, on the first attempt, our guy was clearly clearly held and it was not called. Rex was rightfully furious.

i have no problem with rushing the punter at all in that situation.
agree with those citing how bad Wilson looked returning punts. And for those who think McKnight would have been an asset there, keep dreaming. He was less dependable than Wilson in previous attempts.

It might be worth bringing in a return specialist for punts and kicks at this point.
they have to be able to do both tho.. maybe Cribbs if he has any speed left in the tank.

On a short field you can go without a PR sometimes. But ya when you give the punter a chance to do what they want on a long field its stupid.

If Wilson (or McKnight last year) are just gonna catch the punt and stand there, then why risk the fumble on a miss-catch? Might as well get up on the LOS and try to block one.

How bout this... Offer Westhoff a contract. Tell him we'll back up a Brinks truck or better yet, give him a % of the team for him to come back and straighten this shitshow of a unit out. In the meantime, Rex needs to get into whomever the ST's coach's ass bigtime and lay down the law.

On a sidebar, they really need to cut Gates if for no other reason, to send a message about accountability.

This, Wilson was garbage last night, this will probably be the first year in a long time, we don't have anything special fielding the ball on special teams, better off just letting cromartie do it, maybe he could pretend he's Deion sanders an play WR too.

They need to cut Gates because he's a terrible receiver. He was a terrible receiver last year and he's still a terrible receiver this year. I don't care what he looked like in practice or the preseason. Everyone was talking up how great his route running improved ... he still can't - you know - CATCH.
