    Make no mistake about it.

In terms of the past, Penny is the one connection to the past Jet-Pat games. There's no Mawae, no Martin, no Sowell, no Moss, no Vinny, no Hackett, no Herm. Penny is the holdover from another era of Jets football.

But yet Pennington, as well noted, is reincarnated. He's stronger, sure. that's evident. But more importantly, there's the Schottenheimer effect, or as the best of us have it, "The Brian Bounce". Pennington is invested with more power than ever before. Perhaps with more power over an offense vis a vis any particular defense than any QB in the NFL {well, there is Peyton...} And moreover, Pennington does have plenty of exposure to the defense that has been crafted by BB to defense him. So his input into today's gameplan will be essential.

Remember, Pennington comes up to the line, and it's his call. It's going to be his brain versus Bellichik's brain.

    Who can outwit the other.

Besides the other matchups across the board, which are also essential, the major determining factor of this game, will be the game of wits between Chad Pennington with the counter-schemes that Brain has entrusted him with and Bill Bellichik, his blitzing, his disguises, scheming and the execution of his players.

Don't let Chad's non-chalant demeanor fool you. This game is the crux of his "triumphant return".

    Take that back!!!

I refuse to accept that any "effect" attached to the name "Schottenheimer" could bring anything but hurt. Call it the "Brian Bounce," if you like. Just take that other name out of it.

There's also Coles. An interesting note is that Pennington and Coles have only played together against the Pats once, and they did well in that game. Long time ago, sure, but they do seem to bring the best out of each other.

Well with Mangini coaching Chad, Chad will get a MUCH better understanding of what he was doing wrong against the Pats D and he should benefit from Eric Mangini IMO.

i thought about that Kris. I actually consider Coles and the rest of the wrs, to be an extension of Pennington, because he is the distributor of the ball.

they'll have to get open and make the catch, but before all that, Penny will have diagnose the defense, and then direct them to the correct places on the field via audible -- which he did plenty of at Tennessee.

But Coles I'd expect to be huge in any CP success. Huge. The legit question is, can NE contain Coles? How recovered from that toe that has bother him is he? Is he as good as ever?

BUt all of that, the answers, come after the audible, after the decision of where to throw, after the throw is made.

The Post-Throw will also be important to the outcome of the game, for sure. I just think the decisions CHad Pennington makes, the disguises he puts on vis a vis the disguises that BB will put on and the decisions of these two, will be "thee factor".

That's true, absolutely. All of this will be invested in Chad's brain -- tendencies of BB, knowledge of the scheme, reasons for past success, etc.

It will be Chad's brain that synthesizes the info and makes the call.

I hate to say it, but if this game becomes a match of Pennington's brain vs. Belicheck's, Penny is probably gonna lose. Even way back when he was our defensive coordinator, Belicheck's defenses have played the smartest, greatest offenses like fiddles and the Jets don't really have an outstanding unit (unless the run game turns itself around today.)

If we are gonna win it's going to be because the coaching staff can force the defenses hand and draw them out of position for big plays.

Pennington however is the one that will be the final say. He will go up the line with a set of variables. He then will balance the equation. BB has always gotten the better of him, absolutely.

That is why this game is such an important one for CP - does he finally have the tools and the control to match wits and out-wit BB?

    We'll see.

We can only hope. I just can't help but get the feeling that unless the Jets can run the ball for legitimate yardage that the Pats are going to win this game.
