Agreed. It cannot be ignored that Simms is also a year on the team. That basically negates the college experience for me. TRUST me on that one...
If the coaches thought this was true then Simms would be very much in the conversation to start game 1. Obviously they do not think that Simms is playing better than the other QB's. This is likely because of the competition he's playing against and what his results turn into. He completed 75% of 44 passes against the Eagles. How many TD passes did he throw? What percentage of his passes actually were key to scoring drives? Where did the scoring drives that he led originate from? Answers: Simms threw zero TD passes in his 44 attempts. He threw 2 key passes on drives where the Jets scored a TD, completing a 3rd and 7 and a 4th and 1. The TD drives that he led started on the Eagles 29 and on the Eagles 18. In short he had very good numbers on the night but those numbers were not key to the Jets successes that night. He didn't lead a TD drive that started outside the Eagles 30 yard line. There were mistakes made by the entire offense but also by Simms despite his otherwise excellent numbers. If you just look at the box score you think WHOA! 33 of 44 for 285 yards how could that not be great! Then you look at the play-by-play and you see how it was not great. It was a decent game and it locked up a 3rd string spot for him but it wasn't like it was going to win the Jets anything in the regular season because they lose that game if Simms is playing against a normal NFL defense and if the Eagles don't keep handing the Jets the ball in FG range.
2nd string offense vs 2nd Team defense=Even playing field, even talent. Simms performed on a Night were ppl are trying to get noticed, and fighting for their jobs, hence the amount of hits Simms took. His performance should not be overlooked as many so called back ups come in and struggle against the back up defense. Sanchez got hurt against a Bank up defense right, it's not like they don't play. As matter of fact a lot of those back ups become starters. Simms deserves credit for his performance. If you discredit him for his performance against the back ups then let's talk abt Geno and his performance with our starting offense... If you can't perform with your starting offense then how are you going to perform with your 2nd string offense, just saying kinda hard.
I agree with most of what you said except I believe Rex really would have rather Sanchez start because he does need to win as many games as possible, as some have stated. Let's face it, you will win more games with Sanchez than Smith at this point. Just goes to show how boneheaded a move that was with the shoulder injury, and that's coming from a fan of Rex as a coach. Or, he totally didn't give a shit about Sanchez and maybe this is all convenient for him. Don't forget, he threw Sanchez in with the backup OL against Jacksonville if I remember correctly.
I think Rex was leaning towards Sanchez, and put him into the 3rd preseason game hoping that he would go out there, not make any mistakes, and then he would have a powerful argument to go to Idzik and MM with. They would be more inclined to believe that Sanchez was the guy for right now, even if Smith has more potential. With the injury turning out to be substantial, the choice for starter was down to Smith, Simms, or McElroy. Simms and McElroy were viewed only as candidates for the #3 spot, not as starter candidates- so they decided that they have to start Smith in the first game of the regular season and rather than having him "compete" and maybe get injured, they had MM teach him some simpler version of the playbook that he can practice relentlessly and hopefully master well enough to be decent. The thinking was that Smith's poor performance in preseason game 3 was mostly due to his ankle still being bad. Keeping him out of preseason game 4 also helps his ankle heal. So for preseason game 4, they needed to bring in Harrell even though he is 28 and to my knowledge hasn't started an NFL game yet. This was Simms's chance to knock out McElroy, which he did. They probably figure that they'll give Smith a few weeks and see if he is able to play decently with the simplified playbook (which will change every week depending on the opponent), and by that point Sanchez will be healthy enough to take over if need be. I read somewhere that Smith was considered to have out-played Mark in practice, and they viewed the bad preseason game 3 performance as having to do with his ankle issue more than anything else. I know the common wisdom says that if you start Smith, you have to let him finish the entire season, no matter how much he struggles, but I disagree. I heard Rex saying that they might not announce a winner even though they will have a starter, so I think that's the angle they will use. They're going to leave the door open for Mark to play if Smith isn't ready, and do it in a face-saving way that allows them to still say that Smith is the potential QBOTF.
I told you last season that Mark Sanchez was not going to be the QB of the Jets in 2013. Geno is just somebody to give the fans reason to watch this season while Idzik figures out who is a keeper and who isn't. After this season Rex will be gone, and if Geno proves he is the man to lead us(or Simms), great, if not we have a top pick to select a QB. Not much more to it than that.
What is wrong with you? I wouldn't wish an ACL tear on any player in the NFL, let alone someone on my own team.
BINGO! that is exactly whats going on, or at least what is most likely happening. the sanchez injury has given them one hell of a good excuse to give smith a shot and be able to back out if needed. in the meantime its a simplified strategy that they go with for now, in the hopes of making him work.
Also, keep in mind that Simms performed in a manner akin to Russell Wilson last year. Having him in our long term plans shouldn't be a difficult concept, imo.
Idzik is a complete joke if we draft a QB next year. If he gets it wrong with Geno, he HAS TO be right about the QB next year. If not, then I would want him fired after the 2014 season.
True not to mention he also threw two certain pick-6's that were dropped by Philly defenders, one on his very first pass attempt.
I think you nailed the strategy they had with Garrard. they probably figured he would look like the career average qb he has been. making mark an easy cut. the curious thing now is can mark still be released with the simms showing. I am not on the start simms train, but did he show enough to become the #2 if it is going to be a development season anyway? I stated in another thread, any snaps mark takes this season delays progress
i.m.o. you couldn't be more off base. if we go qb next year(I assume you mean round 1) I would applaud idzik for not being too egotistical and doing whats right for the team, not his rep
If that's the way you'd run a team if you were the owner you'd never be better than 2-14 and no coach or GM worth a lick of salt would ever work for you. It takes at least 2-4 seasons just to evaluate a draft and your talking about firing a GM after his first fully run draft, man....sad sad sad.
I'm not being off base. A 2nd round draft pick should be able to contribute. If Idzik wastes a 2nd round pick, then attempts to replace it with a 1st round pick, he HAS TO get it right. If Geno sucks then he should have never been drafted. A 2nd round pick is valuable, if we draft a QB next year then that means Idzik is admitting he already completely messed up with Geno.
If that was the original plan was to bring in Garrard to hold the fort until Geno was ready was a moronic plan. Did you really think it was a good idea to bring in a retread with a history of injuries and haven't played for two years was a good plan. Also Geno was a value pick, not a need pick like some of you think he is, the jets got because he was good value at that pick position. The Jets are not in the football business, they are this marketing machine generating cash for woody, hence the leaks and stuff which are there to guage responses. Maybe it's just me working in marketing using the same tactics to make profit.
Geno was the best player available in the 2nd round. You take a chance on him and if it doesn't work out, it's not a huge deal because you can always draft another QB (just as with any position). The rookie caps make missing on draft picks much easier to swallow. Like the pick or not, Idzik saw value there because he could potentially land a solid starting QB for a fairly cheap price. It's all just a numbers game. I wouldn't mind them drafting a QB every year as long as they're going best player available.
