I am not of the mentality that thinks this team is 'rebuilding', especially in this modern era of free agency and impact draft picking. If anyone wants to think that, then Rex and the entire organization is calling this season a wash - and that's just plain bull. If Rex can somehow squeeze enough confidence out of Sanchez thru a new OC along with his proclaimed 'top 5' defense, they have a shot at making the playoffs as a wild card. If they throw a rookie QB into the fire without giving a Mark a chance, and that would surprise the heck out of me, then that would officially make this season ( and many more to come) a 'retooling' year. .for want of a better word.
I understand it completely. I have been a fan since 1966 and a season ticket holder since 1980. I am as anxious for a title as anyone. But impatience and the one year go for broke plan the Jets have been using since 2008 does not work. The Jets need to build a team that is young and deep and you do that through the draft and by making smart acquisitions of undervalued players. You also need a QB and stability. The Jets need a team that will win 10+ games a year for 5-6 years. You don't build a team like that without letting young QB's develop and by changing coaches and QBs like you change underwear. The Jets need to give Smith a chance and not judge him by three quarters of a preseason game. We need to let this season play out and see if the team is pointed in the right direction. That won't be known until late in the season.
I think theyare. So...you Keep Rex. You Keep Sanchez, and develop Geno. And thats the way this is going to play out. Jets will be north of 8 wins, I say 11. When that happens Rex gets extended, Sanchez gets another season, possibly renegotiated, to drop his price, and Geno doesnt see the field absent injury or mop up duty, till 2015. Try to remember, this is the first time Rex has had a competent OC.
I will take a run at this. The reason for me is because a thread like this that calls bitching about losing franchise that is laughed at around the league is a hard thing to break. Under Parcells, he broke it. May not have gotten the championship but for that brief period it was great being a Jet fan. From the media to other fans the chip fell off the shoulder. It was the way he ran this team. The respect factor. When Rex won early, any sane mind knew that this would end tragically. You can stand on top of the hill and tell everyone else you are the team to beat..and you are this and you are that without getting a big x put on your back and one day sinking ugly...which was the view the past few years. No head coach in any sport has won that way over a period of time..none. Its usually a quick fix and a crash landing. While I respect JWWS and understand his thinking, there is no reason being a Jet fan one can relax under a normal football season..rebuilding or not. Is the current GM making the right moves and are we on the right path? Not sure but very possible. Can Rex turn this around and shut the f up and just coach so this team doesnt have a huge bullseye? We shall see. Players have gone to him and told him it makes life harder when he is blabbing his mouth. With that said, this franchise created the fan base mentality....not the other way around. When I was a kid, it was very cool to be a Jet fan. Now some may say who gives a shit what other people feel about a franchise. While thats true, its ok if the thought is they hate you..the despise you..but you cant take away what they do on and off the field. With this franchise thats just not the case.
finally someone with a brain that understands how the season works. I will never give up on my team until we are offically done but people want to give up before we play one game. People don't understand teams don't game plan for teams in the pre-season, they run the same 5-10 plays the entire pre-season.
I didn't start this thread to criticize people for complaining about the difficulties of being a Jets fan. I known that all too well. I also didn't start this thread to defend the franchise and the image it now has. I started it to point out the absurdity of all the posts by those making definitive statements about Smith's career, how Simms or McElroy are the best QBs on the roster, and how terrible the team is going to be, all based on preseason. I was criticizing those who were firing Ryan and discussing coaches for 2014, who saw the Sanchez injury as the end of the world when 3/4 of Jets fans didn't even want him on the team after last season, and those who think the will without question find the QB of the future in what they perceive as a QB rich draft in 2014. All of these posts are incredibly premature, ignorant, and full of panic and manufactured pessimism given that it is August. I don't expect then Jets to make the playoffs, but I refuse to write off Smith, Ryan, Idzik, and others based on preseason.
I'm definitely not writing off Smith or Idzik, I'd prefer not to write off Ryan. Idzik had his hands tied coming in to this season with a salary cap mess and limited options as to what he could do this season beyond clearing roster and cap room for the 2014 season. I won't even judge this draft since it was run basically by Tanny's scouting department Ryan I love as a DC, and he'll be fine as a HC as long as he keeps his hands off the Offensive side of the ball. Smith is a rookie, I never write off rookies and I don't even start grading them the same way I grade veterans until their 3rd or 4th season. Sanchez will be cut after the 2013 season. He may be resigned to a much lower deal, but he won't be renegotiated.
jwws...wasnt knocking the thread. Like I said..I hear where you are coming from. I was just knocking the idea of being premature to look into the crystal ball and see this franchise make the same mistakes...over and over. I cant think of too many franchises that have the right to be cynical. Just to mention a few....I think Rex Ryan deserves every snowball being thrown at him...I really do. When you beat your chest, you deserve what comes back at you. When you make every team in the NFL just a bit more hyped up to beat you...lets put it this way...there is reason every good coach will call out a player for putting bulletin board material against a team they are about to play. Been like that for years. Rex acted like an out of control player. With that said..deep down I like the guy. I really think he is a defensive genius and hope he learned how to keep it in the locker room...besides rooting for the Jets, Im rooting for him too. I cant speak for others but I didnt think the Sanchez injury was the end of the world..I just thought if he was your number 1..perhaps you should have started him in the second half..hey...splitting hairs..I do not think Sanchez has done anything in the past 2 years and first 2 preaseason games to earn who his offensive line should be..but thats me. Think Smith isnt close to being an NFL qb but would never write him off. And JWWS my friend, when its all said and done....Simms could be the best qb out of the bunch..lol. Not that he could be great or even good..but he could be the best.
This team plays better with low expectations . Whenever we are projected to be a top team. We never live up to the hype. Same with the giants. When they won those SB's. No one would have bet before those seasons started that they would do it.
I completely agree and it's obvious based on the way our offense is moving the ball now it's kind of refreshing seeing the Jets do that. The system is definitely making the players better.
<Talent isn't the biggest factor, good coaching is always the most important factor on my list.> Well, in that case we really are doomed.
The fact that the league is built on rewarding mediocrity doesn't mean you're a chicken little for recognizing the Jets are a crappy football team. Crappy football teams go to the playoffs in today's NFL. I'm comfortable saying the Jets suck and may go 4 and 12 or win 9 or 10 games and make the playoffs. That's how the league works. We aren't winning a SB or even at the beginning of building toward that. Selling chicken shit as gourmet chicken salad doesn't change the fact that it's chicken shit chicken little.
Between 4-12 and 10 and 6 ain't possible unless, say, you were a solid team that had serious injuries. In my mind I think the swing is something more like plus or minus 3. Meaning we could go 4-12 or 7 and 9 if everything goes the Jets way. It is true parity and the hard salary cap have made the NFL a mediocre league. Your main point is correct. Difference between chicken shit and gourmet chicken salad (as you put it) ain't as great as it used to be.
I'm not predicting a good season. I'm just not willing to write players off or write their tickets to Canton based on preseason like most off this board seems to do. My original post states this team is not headed to the playoffs.
I actually think we'll be good, I'm in my third week of Madden 25 and we beat the Bucs 34-17 and beat the Pats week 27-24. Go Jets!!!
I think it's more about leveled competition than mediocrity unless you're the Pats and you just cheat.
 and how many times did the great Bill take the Jets to the AFCC? With a better team no doubt. 1 up for Rex on that one. Then he goes ahead and resigns to a GM role and seeing how Billicheck wrote his resignation on a paper napkin, that tells l you all you need to know about how BP handled things as a Jet GM....... Good riddance, BP!
