Like I stated before the genome said you don't have to swallow every load, you can spit every now & then.

I concur. He should be the starting qb. It would give Geno a chance to mature and get comfortable under center and I believe G-Mac gives us the best chance to win.

Sanchez went down hard and will not practice all week. Putting him out there too soon could worsen the shoulder injury. It's better for him to sit and let it heal properly. Moreover, the front office knows what it has in Sanchez. Smith is, obviously, not 100 percent ready to be the starting QB. Putting him out there too soon could severely retard his development and increase the already-significant possibility that he never makes the adjustment to the pro game. It's understandable that the front office wants to see what they have in Smith, but should also want to give him the best possible shot. At this moment, it seems that Geno would learn more from standing by Morningwheg on the sidelines than standing under center and making mistakes.

Where does that leave the Jets? With McElroy and Simms. The Jets simply don't know what they have in these two players. For all the knocks on McElroy's arm strength, during the first two games, he was able to sling the rock fairly well, particularly on intermediate routes. TGG posters have correctly stated that his arm talent is equal to neither Stafford, nor Cutler. But, as Pennington proved time and again, arm strength isn't the be-all in this league, and smart play, combined with confidence, can be enough to win a locker room and overcome physical limitations.

What does all this mean? Does this mean that McElroy will succeed? No, the odds are certain against him. But with Sanchez out and Smith needing time, the front office does have a chance to see what they have in McElroy. Will he rise to the occasion? Who knows. So far, he's looked serviceable this preseason, apart from the ankle injury. Last year, against the Cardinals, he had two key drives: one to gain the lead, and the second to ice the game. "Big Mac Attack" did not take the NFL by storm, but he did do enough to win. And, for fans like me, winning is enough.

    TL;DR: Give McElroy a shot.

I still think too many of you can't see the forest for the trees. Start Geno now or start him later, but sooner or later he starts.

Eli Manning threw two horrible interceptions, missed badly on several other passes and never looked comfortable in going 4-for-14 for 20 yards with two interceptions, two sacks and a fumble his rookie outing against the Jets in the 3rd preseason game!

Just saying! He sat the first half of the season but you get the reps and learn with live action.

I'm all for playing Geno now rather than waiting. We have to know what we have with him to setup what happens next year.

Yeah, good comparison, a 2 time Super Bowl Champ/MVP against a shaky deer in the headlights rookie who dropped in the draft like a stone "for no apparent reason"

The point IS a 2 time Super Bowl Champ/MVP will be cut alot more slack for having a poor outing in a PREseason game than a deer in the headlights rookie who fighting for his job.

But what he is saying, is that even a 2 time superbowl MVP QB has his off days, as he played terrible too. Even Brady has had a bad pre-season game so far, Geno's was more than bad I'll admit, it was horrible, but the overreactions are astonishing.

Simms should be the backup. McElroy has been hurt all camp pretty much.

Don't forget the other half of that, he has also played behind the second or third string OL with second or third string receivers. I love how people make it all one sided when they talk about backups (not you necessarily).

That's why McElroy should be the backup & Simms the starter, McElroy is injured & when he did play he was mediocre & showed nothing special. Simms has played & when he did play he was very good & has shown something special.

It would seem that I was comparing apples to apples while referring to Eli's 2004 rookie year. Not his current collective body of work.

I was comparing Geno to Eli in 2004 for the same matchup (3rd preseason game.)

That's not what you originally said but if that's where you're looking to go with it now then ok.

Simms is gonna be our next Danny Woodhead. We will release him even though he has been better then Mcelroy and someone will pick him up. Let Simms play the whole game Thursday and make a decision for the 3rd string job. We can't make a decision on the # 1 so lets get something accomplished.

How can anyone make a decision like this based off of a couple preseason games? I have never understood that line of thinking. I know Geno had a bad game, but the only way he is gonna improve is by playing. I say play the kid this year and lets see how he does. W It's not like the Jets are a threat this season for anything other than the Clowney Sweepstakes, so let him play and make mistakes. As long as he learns from them and shows week to week improvement, then it's all good.

I agree, and have said so over and over. mezzavo , who actually played in the nfl also agrees. at this point, starting the turnover machine is much worse than death. it's suicide.
