you have a point, he needs to get used to reading NFL defenses, but whats the best way to teach him that? Will he be able to adjust to them better on the sidelines or on the field? I'm thinking the latter.
I acknowledge your point of view...we'll just move on. You are correct, it definitely doesn't matter what we say...they'll start whomever they start on Sept. 8th. I'm merely debating the topic. More than likely Sanchez is under center. If not him, it's Geno. At this point who cares about the other two...it really is pointless to discuss.
Sanchez has sunk time and time again. Im ready to move on. Worst case, we get a top pick next year and can try again. If Geno shows any promise, than we get him some weapons next year
2013 - Jets start Smith until he settles in or they have to pull him because he's not managing the game. Then they put in one of the backups, not Sanchez, and see what they have there. 2014 - If Smith worked out the Jets are golden and they go get a playmaker or two in the draft and build from there. If Smith didn't work out, well the Jets are in the top 6 in the draft at that point and figuring out who they're drafting at QB. Smith is real competition for the new guy at that point and if he wins the job the Jets again are golden, if not they have him as a backup until the rookie contract is done. That's probably the path forward at this point. Remember that the media has pre-disastered the Jets at this point. Almost everybody says the Jets are going 3-13. That gives the Jets a lot of space to work with in the under-promise and over-deliver arena and it gives them the out to suck bad enough for a top 3 pick if that's the way things work out.
Because it's a message board and that is what people do on message baords. By your logic Petrozza shoudl just shut this place down and we can all yell at our phones and Madden games for the next 17 weeks because none of us have the authority to discuss such issues. No they're not, they're pointless and they go against the entire purpose of being a member of a message board. I mean really if we're not going to discuss such things why even bother being a member of a message board?
I think he needs at least a month more of practice work before he's ready to go out and make productive mistakes. Mis-reading coverage, mis-identifying blitzes, or making the wrong choice, those can be learning experiences. However one thing that stood out to me last night was the in-game interview with Amukamara (sp?), who said that their coach told them Geno stared down his WR for the entire dropback, so he just watched his eyes and jumped the route. If Geno isn't able to go through his progressions at something like NFL speed then he can't even have growing experiences as a starter. I'd really hope Sanchez is healthy enough to play the first 4 weeks at least for Geno to get more comfortable with the playbook, and with making his reads.
I really could not have said this any better. Mezz is right on here. I would love to see Simms get some reps this week with the 1's and at least a quarter of play time with the 1's in the Eagles game. I think he DESERVES that shot from how he's played. Simms looked better playing against the 2nd stringers than Geno or Sanchez did so the argument he only did well against scrubs doesn't hold water. What we should really be asking is if Sanchez and Geno can't play against 2nd stringers should they be playing as our starting QB this season?
This QB situation doesnt scare me, no QB in the NFL could succeed in this offense with this minor league talent. Until we have weapons, the QB makes no difference, Peyton Manning would fail in this offense.
fair enough, thats the first time I've seen somebody give a reason as to why playing while learning might not work. I'm mostly afraid he won't get enough meaningful time and reps to work out the kinks in his game. but I suppose MM and Lee will the be best judges for how much he needs.
y'know with some pretty good development from guys like Gates, Bohanan and Spadola I'm getting tired of the whole "Jets don't have weapons" bit. I'm not saying Hill, Kerley, Holmes are any of those guys are the best in the league are pro bowl bound, but can we stop acting like we have NOTHING to work with?
Let's not go that far. Manning has done more with less than most QB's ever could imagine. Yes he always had a #1 with Harrison and then Wayne but who else was he throwing to? Brandon Stokely? Jacob Tamne? Marcus Pollard? Anthony Gonzalez, Ken Dilger, Joe Addai? EG Green? Troy Walters? Terrence Wilkins? Jerome Pathon? Qadry Ismael? These are some of the other guys he played with. Hard to say that any of them are standout talents.
All due respect, the first post is idiotic. Geno made 2 bad decisions in the game: throwing the short pass for an int against the zone blitz (will learn this lesson very quickly) and throwing the ball high and late down the middle against a rush. He made the rookie mistake of running out of the end zone but I would seriously doubt that will happen again unless intentional at the end of a game. Other than that, he made very good decisions. He did not have "happy feet", he looked solid in the pocket and showed evasion Sanchez simply does not have. He showed he can throw a screen (something Sanchez failed at yet again last night) He was much more accurate than Sanchez and had much better ball placement. There is much more speed on his passes. He did zero in on primary read too much, and he waited just a fraction too long in releasing the trigger on the ball. He showed resilience and the ability to come back from a mistake which Sanchez rarely does. Have you seriously forgotten how little composure Sanchez has. He was victimized by four or five bad drops on well thrown balls that would have extended drives. The first interception was a mediocre throw that the receiver still should have caught or broken up. The second was bad, and the one against the zone blitz may have been a defense he has never seen before. All are learning experiences and very coachable. His footwork was a bit plodding but not terrible, and he did show he can be evasive. I do not get the Geno hatred. He has a WAY higher ceiling than Sanchez and showed that last night. He looked no worse than Sanchez has this preseason and Mark has 3 interception games all the time and he is a fifth year player. Geno's performance will grade out much better to the Jets coaching staff than your assessment. He actually played pretty well, but has some things to work on
thats the big part in this, we can play armchair coach all we want but they'll make a thorough study based on the film they have as to who's the best for the job. we on the other hand are all be biased one way or another in our interpretation of what happened based on preconceived thought.
I've always wanted McElroy to start, but it's clear that it was never a four-way open competition. It was only open between Sanchez and Smith. I wanted Smith to start because Sanchez is a bum but yesterday proved he's just not ready. I was actually going to say Sanchez should be the starter but then he got hurt. So unless McElroy starts, I think our QB situation is screwed. Smith starting could possibly ruin his career. McElroy can come in and manage the game. He's no Tom Brady but he's no Jamarcus Russel. He won't embarrass us and we really have nothing to lose by starting him.
okay. so Don expressing his viewpoint about the qb debate "goes against the entire purpose of a message board"? I respectfully disagree. Don had a good point whether you agree w/it or not. Don never said that nobody could discuss it - he simply stated the fact that it will be decided by the HC. Which happens to be true. Its not pointless at all. Feel free to express your opinion but please don't try and tell Don that he shouldn't express his.
You know...I have to agree here as well. We may not have pro bowlers but we've got some talented guys. They are certainly not below average at this point. The cupboard isn't totally bare.
What I don't get is why a lot of people are acting like our team is doomed now? Acting like our offense is so terrible.. I don't get it. It is night and day when you compare last years preseason feel to this years preseason feeling. You can just see that things are working A LOT fucking better than last year. A lot of people just need to stop and think a little, the shit is not that bad. The media is making a bigger deal out of all of this then it should be. It's like they are trying really hard to make us look like a laughing stock/clown team again this year. It's stupid. The sky isn't falling. This year will be a ton better than last year. Calm down people. Sanchez will be the starting QB, he has been fairly consistent except for a couple plays in the preseason. This WCO seems to really fit Sanchez, I think he is going to surprise a shit load of people if he stays healthy.
^That's a good point. They had one TD all of preseason last year, 8 so far in 3 games. You can tell the design and playcalling is much better. We won 6 games with arguably the worst offense in the NFL last year.
I think the jets will win fewer games this year with Mark Sanchez starting all 16 than with Geno Smith starting all 16. I think that's true mainly because of two factors. First, Smith is likely to get better as the year progresses and he settles in. I'm not saying he's going to be a good QB by the end of the season or the long-term answer but the odds are that he's better in November as the schedule begins to get easier than he was early on in his "slam-bang that's the game" rookie phase. Second, Sanchez isn't going to be a good QB at any point this season in all probability and he has worn down/given up in December two years running now. Whatever the Jets record is at the end of November it is very likely to be worse by the end of the year. That's just the track record he has created so far. The way that I think the Jets win the fewest games possible this year is to start Mark Sanchez and stick with him until the bye, where 2-7 looks like a real possibility. Then insert Geno Smith to go 2-5 down the stretch. That's the 4-12 that no Rex Ryan team should be able to produce and that won't get the Jets a top 3 pick in all probability because their schedule looks kind of tough and will work against them in the tiebreakers.
The offense is pure trash , no wrs or rbs and the oline cant Run block and if sanchez starts thats even worst the guy is complete trash ,only thing jets have right now is defense and mainly that front 7 the secondary looked sus at times. n we all know cromarti cant tackle 4 shit n it looks like dee cant either they might win 6 or 7 probably even less
