Seems to me like this is a mini-do or die game for Mark's career as a starting QB in the NFL.

Mark has slowly been building momentum. He's gone from a most likely June 1st trade/dump casualty to being on the cusp of being named the starting QB for the NY Jets. While many thought this may be the only option for Rex, very few thought Sanchez would actually EARN it by out-lasting Gerrard and then beating out a hot young gun like Geno Smith.

He seems to be on a VERY slippery slope though. EVERYONE is waiting for the old Mark so show up and implode, like we've seen so many times. His pic 6 last week was the final nail in his coffin, right? But here he is, fighting back with some really good gamesmanship.

This game against the Jags (to me) is the most important game for Sanchez. He has more to prove than Geno. He has 1 1-2 seasons of horrible QB play to erase in 1/2 a pre-season game.

If this game goes horribly wrong, there's just no way anyone can name him the starting QB, no matter how good he does the rest of the way or how 'rookie like' Geno looks at times. Geno will be named the starter, and will signal the end to Mark's NFL career.

If this game gets ugly, we could be watching Mark's last pass in the NFL.

the most important preseason game is preseason game 3. IF he Fs up then well then hes done. Tonight, if he screws up he'll have to split the playing time for the next game which will be the decision game. If he shines tonight, he start the preseason game 3 which means hes the starter for the regular season and Geno gets some playing time in the middle of the 3rd Q and most of the 4th preseason game.

i think the jets must know what they have. they are simply going to try to harness it. so it doesnt make much difference how much he sucks tonight.

then again rex has proven he has no idea what he is looking at on offense, morningwood started joey harrington for a number of years and idzik may not push too hard if rex convinces morningwood that sancho is the man.

ugh... so fucking painful to think this turd will be the qb yet again and we will have to listen to rex gloss over his bullshit play week after week until the whole fucking thing explodes.

Maybe, if he's REALLY lucky. My thought is if Mark implodes tonight, Morningwig names Geno the starter and Geno plays 3 qtrs next week. Mark is done.

If Mark rears his ugly head against the Jags in a pre-season game after having such a good camp, then the decision might be made that there's really no hope for him, so give Geno all the reps they can.

That's why I'm thinking this could be the most important game of his career.

They were neck and neck until Geno sprained his ankle. To me, that doesnt say he earned it. more of a by default kind of thing.

Actually, I think this game is very important. If Sanchez leads the team down the field for TDs in his first two drives, then he will immediately receive much more support from fans. BUT, if he throws a pick 6 or 2 ints, he may well be done with the Jets. Jets fans are unforgiving and we can only take so much bad QB play.

That's the problem they have...they know what the have in Geno, a young Rookie with a rocket arm who's not quite ready quite for the speed of the game.

Sanchez? They have a 5yr vet with a high tendency to make really bad throws. (Red Yellow Green?). They don't know if Mark's matured enough (or if he ever will) to avoid the panic attacks that only happen in "Live Action!!!" to steal a phrase from the squirrel man.

That's the question they're trying to figure out with Mark. If he shows he's just as likely to panic and throw to a d-lineman or into triple coverage (when he's in FG range) then Rex/Idzikk/MM may just pull the plug, cut their losses, name Geno 'The Man' and take their lumps with a developing Rookie QB.

You could be spot on. A really bad game from Mark may very well cause Geno to be named the starter for better or worse, and if so, then Geno will play all 3 qtrs next week.

Personally I think Sanchez paid off the grounds keeper ;)

Sanchez hasn't looked great this off season, lots of pick's in 11 on 11's and of course the pick 6 in the game against the Lions.

That said, if he can't look good against the Jaguars he can't look good against anyone.

You really want your starting QB to get 3 full qtrs of prep work in game 3. That's the last tune up under live fire.

I think the decision will be made Monday. Mark only has to play avg to above avg to get the nod. Anything less gives an opening for Idzik to get his guy in there.

Rex can bump heads wit Idzik if he wants to be a DC somewhere next year and not a HC with the Jets. I'm not saying Geno is the answer, but I believe he's a better answer long term than Sanchez. My pick for the Jets didn't get drafted but has already worked his way to being 3rd string and has been impressive in Chiefs camp with talk of him quite probably being the #2 by the end of this year behind Smith.

Do we have to accept the fact that Mckelroy will never be a starter for us? All I hear is Sanchez and Smith, but what about Mack? Does he have no chance?

McElroy has no chance because he was never given one to begin with.

WE know Sanchez will get booed but im hoping im wrong... I say we should wait to see how he does in the first series of play.

    anyhow

I want to ask my Jets fans is if Sanchez throws has a game where he 10-15 1td and had a int. that was clearly not his fault (ex: deflection at the line, ball hits receiver in the hands, etc) will the fans still boo???

In regards to the OP: AYFKM?

Mark Sanchez is not a starting caliber QB in the NFL no matter what he does in game 2 of the pre-season. We have more than enough evidence over the past 4 years to conclude that Sanchez is at best a mediocre game manager who occasionally flashes brilliance if everything else goes just right to let him do that.

Is game 2 important for him? Yeah it's one of the dwindling number of games that he will start in any capacity as a QB in the NFL. So from that stand point it's very important to him.

Mark will be the starting QB when it counts - in the regular season....

I've stated this before and will state it again that Gino is a project in the making. Those who think he's just going to step right in and just take over, it's laughable :D

No experience and not fully understanding the players around you and the opposition spells disaster. Like the Jets are really going to make the 2013 season a wash because Smith is a media/fan favorite and risk throwing him in against the wolves.
