Are you guys that think we will be ok kidding ? We just had a draft in which we drafted a CB and DT in the first round . Last time I checked the team that scores the most points wins . We needed a WR TE G RB QB during the draft . We drafted Geno Smith in the 2nd and drafted some guards later on . We should have at least taken another offensive need position in the first if not with both picks. Richardson and Millner may be good but they wont score many points. Then we bring in Ivory and Winslow ,two major injury cases . Then we bring in Braylon whose best days are behind him because we really don't have a choice. What a fricken mess !
If the Jets don't take the offensive linemen in the back half of the draft we're looking at a much thinner line right now and one where an injury or two could blow up the season. They made the right call. You build from the ball out. If you don't do that you become the Detroit Lions in a hurry.
I totally agree with Br4dw4y5ux post above. Clearly we took value on our first few picks, but not just value. We had to address the CB position to get someone to team up with Cro. Yes, we have Wilson, but he wasn't the answer. We now have someone who can develope into a great CB, learning from Cro, who will hopefully anchor the position for years to come. Our OL HAD to be adressed. No, I am not a Sanchese apologist, but that OL didn't help matters. When Geno is finally under center, whether it's game 1, game 6, game 14 or game 1 of next season, I want him to have some time in the pocket. I want him to have the confidence that he won't get killed so he could make good decisions. I DON'T want him hearing footsteps and rushing his decisions if fear of getting killed. If that were the case, we would have wasted the 2nd round pick. Regarding the WR position, we have both Hill and Kerley who are young and can develope a nice long term relationship/bond with Geno. We still need some vet presence at the position and with Holmes injury, bringing Braylon back should accomplish that. I do want us to take a WR early in next years draft though. Hopefully find that WR who will grow into a #1. I believe, hopefully not too naively, that now that we have a strong(er) OC, with some history and hopefully some balls, the offense will get some additional attention in the next draft. No, I don't think he'll change RRs defensive mentality (and I don't want him to), but I think he'll have more influence. Anyway, there's my two cents. Just the thoughts of a newbie. Be gentle....
Cosigned x 100 Our Oline is in very good shape now. We were spoiled for a long time having a probowl Oline and CB's that some don't understand a majority of teams don't have it that good and still get the job done well. I agree that a WR would have been a fan favorite after our offenses performance last year. But the truth remains our biggest weakness last season when compared to the seasons we saw back to back AFCC games was the defense lacking of a pass rush and the inability to gtfo the field without giving up 3-7 points. Teams ran on us with free will 90% of the time. I raged durring the draft when we took a CB and a 43 DT in the first. While re watching the 2012 season and paying attention to the packages that were used I am seriously excited to watch this defense go get it. For a mental visual find some highlight footage that has Wilk Pouha Coples Thomas Then imagine that front 4 as Wilk Ellis/Garay Richardson Coples With Barnes Scott Davis filling out the front 7. To me this sounds like a pretty scary 3 down front 7 with out being so weak vs the run game.
This wasn't an offensive draft. How does picking the best rated corner, DT and QB in the draft come off badly? Our biggest needs were pass protection, stopping the run, fixing our passing game, and we had to replace Revis. Yeah the team that scores the most points wins. Guess what good defenses do? They allow less points scored. If this was like last year's draft, I'd probably agree with you, but those picks were smart considering who was available. Rex is a madman when running the D and now he has more toys to play with. If the scumbag Bills didn't trade with the rams strictly to screw the Jets, we would have probably drafted Austin and Milliner. I'm saving this post so I can quote it when Milliner gets his first pick 6 and Richardson causes a sack fumble that leads to a TD. Keep that bag on your head in the meantime.
of course Idzik's gonna have a say in who the starting QB is. Idzik is looking at a MUCH bigger picture than anyone else on the staff, like billion dollar contracts and shaping the team for years to come. Rex, on the other hand, will go with the QB that gives him the best chance to beat the Bucs.
I think they'll all shit down and Rex, Idzik, MM, Lee and Lynn will discuss what's the best option Most fans feel we should call the games around Geno, like Russell Wilson had the privilege to getting and others feel he should watch from the sidelines But I know 1 thing, Geno is not going to learn anything watching Mark You learn from your mistakes not others, Geno sitting wont help him read a defense or react to a blitz or anything he needs Let him play and protect him
Finally someone who gets what I was trying to say, because this is what I ment .We haven't drafted a offensive player in the first round since Sanchez and that's why the offense looks the way it looks with zero playmakers
If the Jets were looking to let Rex go at the end of the year they'd have overloaded on offensive talent and let him work with the scraps left over on defense. Instead they took 2 of the top 4 players on their board, and I have little doubt at this point that Milliner and Richardson were in the top 4 for them. That's outstanding value on the 9 and 13. The easy move for Idzik and the staff would have been to bow to the conventional wisdom that the Jets needed playmakers and a QB and reach for a QB on the 9 and then take Tyler Eifert on the 13. That would certainly have given them less talent on the roster than they have now.
Yes..the team lacks offensive playmakers. But who were the playmakers available at their draft slots worth taking? I've heard people say Eifert..but watch the tape...while surely a first round talent...he was NOT a top 15 type tight end. There was nobody else. It was a defense heavy draft. Jets drafted for overall talent/value. That's always the right call. It may take alittle while but if you scout well & rank players appropriately...their tends to be a trickle down effect(See Baltimore,Pittsburgh,NYG) Jets did manage to get value & rebuild the long term OL depth chart in the late rounds. So the offensive rebuild has indeed began. Rome wasn't built in a day. This upcoming offseason they'll have alittle more insight as to how to build this offense depending on who is playing QB. They have cap space, ample picks & what looks to be a very good draft class skill wise.
I can't believe this thread actually made it to 4 pages of responses to these two trolls. I think Idzik is doing a phenomenal job given the situation he was put in. Not resigning our FAs that ended up getting overpaid elsewhere has given us future flexibility cap-wise and with comp picks. Kurt beat me to it with his post above: what offensive player would you have wanted instead of our picks in RD 1? Before you say Eifert check out the highlights below from the NC game and you'll see he was held mostly in check by guess who: DEE MILLINER. With the #13 our FO thought that Sheldon was clearly the better prospect and with Rex's defensive mind I am salivating over the thought of what our DL can do going forward (see: 2007 Giants). BTW, in case you haven't noticed we spent our 2 RD pick on arguably the top rated player at QB, by far our biggest question mark on the roster. And if you have a problem with the OL picks in the later rounds then you clearly have zero football knowledge and haven't been paying attention to the Jets over the the last few years. Exactly what would you have wanted Idzik to do differently this offseason NyJetsRevis24 and DrownedJetsFan? Give me some specific, quality examples (Austin Collie...LOL). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmHweQiUlNA
Did I ever say draft eiffert ? These are great picks for the new york jets ? What we be wrong with drafting Warmack in the first round . And why did your arguably great QB fall to the second round ? Richardson or Millner are not going to play safety or linebacker last time I checked. Dee Millner is not revis . We should have drafted a wideout with the next pick . Patterson or Hopkins . Obviously you have not been paying attention to the jets then you would realize we don't score points ! And you your think our d-line is 2007 giants Really ?
U have not the foggiest idea of how many regular posters in this group are in total denial of the NYJs present & future circumstances
Warmack is a ticky-tacky call. I wouldn't have hated that pick if Jets got him. After Tannenbaum disaster, the problem areas are: 1. Pass protection 2. Offensive playmakers 3. Pass rush 4. [Via Revis departure] CB They are four gigantic holes, and you don't fill them all in a single draft. It is not even like Jets had a heap of cash to spend during FA period. And Jets front office addressed all [!!!] of them this off season: 1. Used three picks for the OL depth [will have to invest more in coming years, but it's a step in the right direction.] 2. Chris Ivory, Mike Goodson, Kellen Winslow Jr and Braylon Edwards. Not something you'd write home about, but then they all have potential to be good. [Especially Ivory and Winslow Jr.] 3. Richardson, along with emerging Mo Wilk and Ellis, will provide spark up the middle. And don't forget Coples 4. Milliner. 'Nuff said. So, with the limited resources, Idzik did what he could. And you are pissed off because he did his job? Or are you saying Idzik should have pulled Tannenbaum yet again? And fail?
You've been in denial about anything REMOTELY positive regarding this organization for about as long as TGG has been in existence.
IMHO, the only thing Idzik has done wrong. Was crearing a media shitstorm, by declaring QB an open competition, if Geno had beat Sanchez in camp, so be it...but creting the circus was absurd.
Coupled with NE requiring 3 corners, and Miami having OL problems, this draft looks better every day.
