He had a better year than Andre Johnson, Eric Moulds and I'll give him with Drew Bennett who played 3 fewer games. The Jets could use a #1 receiver....Coles makes a great complementary receiver.
i think you also have to realize that he had no legitimate qb throwing to him. If you want to figure out if he's a number one reciever, check out his first (and i believe only) year with pennington.
Compare all of those teams quarterback play as well as running game and offensive line play. Coles was the only player we had last year that has really ever been a starter or deserved to be a starter.
Coles played w/ 5 diff QBs, no running game and a beat up OL. The #s he put up were incredible considering what he was surrounded by.
I think he is. Coles is fearless... Someone in another thread said a true #1 isn't afraid to go over the middle... When has Coles ever been afraid to go over the middle?? He's a stud believe me. The fact he put up 70+ grabs and 800+ yards with no running game and FIVE different QB's in one season is remarkable... If we get a healthy QB with a decent arm he'll prove himself again. But that's just my opinion.
Coles is a #1 WR. He's not in the class of Owens, Moss, Ward, Johnson, etc., but he's a strong #1 for a lot of teams.
Ridiculous to compare his 2005 numbers in a vacuum. He had a 3rd stringer with no offensive line or running game throwing to him. in 2003 he had 1,204 yards. In 2004 he had 90 receptions with a horrible quarterback situation in DC an no other receiving threat. But forgetting all of that, he fits the Mangini mold: a tough, hard nosed football player who will do what it takes to win.
I agree with 10Penny10. If there was a WR like the 4 he mentioned on the team he would definitely be the #2, but on most teams, he is a legit 1. His only downside is his height. If he were another 2-3 inches taller, he would be up there with those other guys, even with a mediocre QB. With a decent QB though, even at his height, with his speed, and pure guts, he gets my nod as a #1 any day.
How many AFC teams had GOOD QB play??? Six maybe...fine he had bad QB play but #1 receivers produce big numbers in the face of all the adversity that players go through
How many AFC teams with mediocre QB play had at least a functional running game. We had a 3rd string QB, and a QB who started the year on his couch this year. We also had absolutely no running game, and the OLine gave our QBs less than 3 seconds all the time. The fact that he had over 70 receptions with a better than 10ypc average tells you more than anything else.
Number 1 receivers don't produce big numbers with 4 different QBs,it's as simple that.Bad QB play is a QB who throws for only 3000 yards or has a QB rating of under 80,Coles pretty much had horrible QB play with the exception of a couple of games.
I acknowledge our QB's sucked, but I agree, that plenty of WR's with horseshit Qb's outperformed Coles. I like the idea of getting a true #1 and keep Coles as #2.
