http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2013/07/jets_sign_k_billy_cundiff.html I'm sure you guys already know this and I'm not sure if it's worth a thread, but I thought I'd give it a shot. Maybe Folk will do better with more competition. Fun fact: Billy Cundiff has now signed contracts with 12 @NFL teams, 37.5% of the league.
I think everyone avoid a topic because you KNOW there will be a bunch of idiots bringing up his miss.
Cundiff delt with an embarrassing moment (or moments?) and joined the most embarrassing team on earth. Nowhere to go but up.
In discussing a player brought in from another team, invariably their history will be brought up; noteworthy accomplishments, not-so-noteworthy "moments," etc. So if someone brought up--in this case--Cundiff's crucial miss at a critical juncture, why would that make that person or those persons "a bunch of idiots?"
http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/4245/billy-cundiff Cundiff: His career kicking percentage is 75.5%, (75.7% in 2011, his last full year) http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/10621/nick-folk Folk: 77.9% career, (77.8% in 2012). Overall, meh.
Former Pro bowler but all I can see in my head is him missing that chip shot FG in the AFC championship game last year to send his team into OT lol
Honestly Nick Folk isn't that bad, I don't know why he has such a terrible rep, doesn't do anything any other kicker doesn't every now and then, hard to having a kicker not mess up a chip shot every now and then.
He hasn't done anything postseason wise to hurt the Jets, time and place for what? His game winner against Indy? He's not as bad as people like to make him out to be.
He's not that great. He doesn't have much of a leg either. I don't trust him with anything over 40 yards. I've watched a lot of Baltimore games over the year. I mean, he's 57.5% on 40-49. 21.7% on 50+. 73.4% on 30-39? This guy would be a complete waste of cap space.
Besides his FG stats one stat that jumped out at me was how his touchbacks leaped off the charts in one year. Leading up to 2010 Cundiff had only 11 touchbacks on over 200 kickoffs. Suddenly, in 2010 he tied an NFL record with 40 touchbacks on 79 kickoffs. Huh?!! Here's a guy whose kickoff touchback percentage suddenly went from 5% to 50%. Did this guy go Arod or something? A TB spike that drastic makes no sense. He then came back down to earth, was released after the Raven-Pats game miss, with Washington for a cup of coffee then to SF when David Akers went in the tank but never saw any action. The guy's been released by 11, count 'em 11 teams. Token competition for Folk imho.
I'm not saying he's great or anything, I agree and upgrade at kicker couldn't hurt, but it's just annoying seeing people celebrate over every kicker signed thinking they will surely beat out Nick Folk because apparently he is the worst kicker ever.... to some people.
That seems a little out of left field. Folk definitely gets criticized more than he should be, but he also has blown plenty of chip shots. I'm less nervous when he's kicking a 52 yard FG than when he's kicking a 20 yarder. Cundiff has been there and done that. He's a pretty solid kicker, but he's getting old. I'd stick with Folk, but competition can't hurt.
