RIP. Tremendous player. A true hero of Super Bowl 3. had no idea he was this ill (heart failure and alzheimers)
He and Snell could've actually been co-MVPs. btw, watch his fumble in that game. it'd never even be called a catch under current rules.
He played before my time, but I'll always respect a fallen Jet. Jets never die, they just rest in the hangar.
I'm really bummed to hear this. rest in peace George Sauer. a great player , who could have gone down as even better than Maynard had he continued playing.
RIP George Sauer. Never saw him play outside of black and white archive footage. Dude had a killer moustache, too.
My dad got choked up about this when I told him. Sauer was and still is his favorite all-time Jet. R.I.P.
For those of you who don't remember, Sauer was a very good player. Gteat route runner and great hands. In the Super Bowl, Maynard was doubled plus he was a little hobbled. Sauer dominated Colts corner Leonard Lyles. The Jets winning that Super Bowl is still one of the great days of my life. At almost 60 years ols there are many things I don't remember but that day I remember like yesterday.
Wow, this is very upsetting. He was a big part of my sports fandom growing up. An amazing pair of hands, and a great great route runner. I mentioned this in the All-Star thread, but in terms of peak value Al Toon was the only Jets receiver at the level of Sauer (I give Maynard the overall edge because of sustained long-term excellence), and Namath was the only other offensive player at that peak level. He was completely dominant in Super Bowl III. RIP, number 83.
