So, the Jets have selected a defensive lineman in the first round of the last three drafts. None of these guys seem to fit into one base system together. Add in Kenrick Ellis and Antonio Garay and you find yourself asking, WTF ARE THE JETS DOING? The only explanation I can think of is that Rex plans to run a 46, and a ton of it. It's the only system these guys can fit into and be able to work off each other well. My question is, do you think this is what rex is planning?
"the 4-6"......is that a dime package? Is that a one DB 6 LB package? The 46, on the other hand is a system with a nose tackle and an edge rusher, two things we haven't added to this team in the draft. Why anyone could look at the draft and say "ah, must be for the 46" is beyond me.
This. The "46" is just a modified 5-2 (which is just a modified 3-4 with both OLBs on the line of scrimmage as defacto DEs and both DEs slid down over the guards instead of the tackles). It still uses 3 wide bodies in the middle and 2 edge rushers on the sides. We're going to use a 46 (or 3-4, or 5-2, or whatever you want to call it) but what makes this obvious is not our draft, but the fact that there isn't a single 4-3 outside linebacker on the roster (and you need two) and the fact that David Harris is a prototype 3-4 inside linebacker (not a 4-3 middle linebacker).
The 46 is a bit dated. I think Rex might be looking for a version of it that incorporates the principles but with 5 DB's in the mix. Same 6 big guys on the line but a safety behind them in the middle position and then normal alignment of DB's with another safety up tight and both CB's in press. If the Jets draft an undersized LB or a big safety on day 3 that's one of the options for the safety in the middle.
I don't think there is going to be any single defense he runs. I think we will see a bunch of different looks. The benefit of taking Sheldon Richardson is his size and speed. He can really create havoc to open up the outside rush. It's going to be fun watching our defense next season.
Ya. Well you'll get a chance to see it on the field for about 2 and a half hours every game day, so you're going to have a very fun season. Enjoy!
