The only way I'm happy with this pick is if it comes to light that Sheldon Richardson can play Nose Tackle in the 3-4. Now I understand that he is a great player and a fabulous athlete and highest on their draft board but there was a guy named Star that was taken one pick after Sheldon Richardson who can play Nose Tackle as well as many positions in the 3-4 and 4-3. I wanted a lineman, in fact I was rooting for Star when the Jets were on the clock. I think this dominant front frees up our linebackers and safteys to blitz at will and allows Rex to dial up the plays he wants. Wilkerson a dominant Nose Tackle and Coples is almost unstoppable in the 3-4. However I question if we took the right DT. Star is a dominant player as is Richardson. They are close to the same size so why can't Richardson play 3-4 NT and Star can? Is Richardson not as strong? At 310 can he add 10 lbs of muscle without losing his quick feet? And most importantly can we get Wilkerson-Richardson-Coples on the field at the same time maximizing their strengths, because we could have gotten Wilkerson-Star-Coples on the field all in their natural position. I trust Rex, I think he has a plan, whether that be the 4-3 or Bear front I think its going to work but it still leaves me questioning did we maximize all our players strengths with this pick or leave something to be desired. Or does Richardson have the ability to be the key cog this defense has been missing.
I am coming around more with this pick because those draw plays wont be that effective with a Q, Mo and Rich line plus we would get penetration
We were 25th in the league last year against the run, I don't care if its because the defense was tired because the offense sucked. That is unacceptable for a Rex Ryan Defense. I wanted D-line I'm just questioning if we took the right guy at the right position.
Not a nose tackle. He is a penetrator who can provide an inside pass rush. Rex needs to find a way to get them on the field together
This defensive scheme doesn't necessarily need a "proper" NT so much as a versatile lineman. Rex hasn't employed a 34 so much as a varied, constantly shifting defense which happens to use a 34 more than a 43. Richardson has uses in a 43, a 46, and other schemes Rex can dream up because of his incredible athleticism.
i think i said this before i jsut dont remember which one of the 18 topics on the same topic i put it in. richardson is a quick dl. he beats blockers who try to get angles on him or shoots gaps on them. thats great in the college game. doesnt usually work so well in the pro game. i dont in any way see him as a guy who can get a push or deal with a double team. he was typically much more athletic than the guy trying to block him in college. however teh guys in the nfl are all as athletic as any guy he faced. he will keep his man from pulling though. if his guy pulls he will be quick enough to get into the backside of the play.
We are probably going to a predominate 4-3 and 4-6 ..makes more sense..we could have a beastly front 7 with those four down linemen.
