Today was impressive, but the magnitude of the moment can't be put on par with playoff games and win-and-in situations.
Really good move by Mangini putting Clemens on inactive list for the game. No pressure at all to put him in if Chad started slowly. I guess we know who his starting QB is now.
This was Pennington's best game for the following reasons: 1) He did it with no running game at all. In 2002, the Jets had a running game against GB and Indy 2) He did it with 4 new players on the OL. The only veteran in the game after the first quarter was Moore, and he stunk. This so-called formula for beating Pennington - blitz and he folds - didn't work. He stood in the pocket under pressure and made great throw after great throw - short and long. 3) He was the reason the Jets won today. The whole team played well against GB and Indy. Nugent stunk today and the defense let down in the 4the quarter. 4) He led the Jets on a winning drive late in the game and completed two huge passes - the 37 yarder to Coles and the TD to Baker. The GB and Indy games were over by halftime. 5) This was his first 300 yard game I propose that anyone who calls Pennington "noodle arm" or an egg be banned for a week. I know it is only one game, but some people on this board need to take their feet out of their mouths and their heads out their $^$^es and eat crow.
This is Tennessee so i'm not going to be like Chad is in 02' form. But I was so happy. He made all of the out-route patterns on a line...He had some zip on the ball, checked down from his 1st option if he was covered and was extremely accurate. Maybe those extra 3 months of re-hab made a huge difference compared to this time last year, who knows... It's the Titans, but in terms of just making throws, Chad deserves an "A". His throw to Coles, both of them, on the deep ball were perfect...Led Coles like a normal QB, no waiting for the ball, and kept Lav running in stride... Very happy how he performed.
Jets at New England, Sunday night, 2002. Went into Brady and Belichick's den, three TDs and played masterfully, keeping playoff hopes alive the following week vs. Green Bay.
i'd say this was #2. i still have to rank that SD playoff game #1 because he did it on the road in the playoffs, with very little of a running game (like today), and most of all WITH A TORN ROTATOR CUFF. 23/33, 279 yrds, 2TD's, 0 INT's that night... but this was still an amazing amazing game by good ol' #10
I was actually SHOCKED to see Chad make those kinds of throws today. I didn't see a single duck. The offense looked better than what I've seen in quite some time. More down field stuff to keep the defense honest and much less dink and dunk. Barlow and Blaylock were a pleasant surprise as well as was JC and Coles with over 150yds receiving! I was surprised at Nugent though. He must have been watching the OSU game and partied a bit late last night cause his head definetly wasn't in this game today at all. He keeps this up and he's out of a job by thanksgiving. All in all, a great start to the Tangini Era of Jets Football! Next week should provide a more serious test although it appeared that Buffalo gave the Pats all they could handle. Go Jets!
there was a fumble in the red zone that gave them 7 points, and a ref's call in the 1st quarter that hosed tenn. still, he actually threw better than i expected. however, when belli sees that fumble, in addition to the pre-season tapes, i expect both the pats and bills will send lots of blitzes his way. the jets have yet to show they can run the ball .
The fumble was not his fault. And I thought the problem with him was his arm, which looked pretty damn good? I do appreciate that this is the first post you have made on this board in almost a year that makes no reference to noodle arm. So progress is being made. If you watched the game, though, you would have realized that the Titans were blitzing. Pennington stood up to the blitz and still made the plays. He won this game for the Jets today. Period. He carried the team on his back and led them to a win, which is something many on this board, including you, said he was never capable of doing.
Actually, what impressed me the most about him was his ability to pick up the blitz (although there was some great pass-protection by the OL.) That's why I felt this was arguably his best game, because even in 2002, his one weakness was blitz pick up, and did a great job with that today.
Stats wise i would say this could be his best game. This was his 1st 300 yard game of his career and he threw the deep ball very well.
I think today was not only Penningtons best game but it was one of the most important big game performances of his pro career. This was the first time I saw him decisive in the pocket and throw down field without a security dump off blanket. He read correctly, he reacted great to pressure in the pocket without getting happy feet and he got more decisive with his throws as the game went on. This win, while coming against a pretty bad team was a road win for a young team with a new and young coaching staff. This not only stamps Chad as the leader of this team but it reafirms the coaching staffs hard work with real results. The players are going to go into this week of practice believing in the staff and their QB, that is a huge change from this morning. A team with real belief is a dangerous team. This team took a big step today and mostly because Pennington lead the way brilliantly.
Yea your right I looked it up. But this still might be his best game considering the odds were against him and he played great.
