Adam Caplan on Twitter: The #Falcons are going to release starting RT Tyson Clabo, according to his agent, Chad Speck. From Rotoworld: Falcons released RT Tyson Clabo. It's a salary cap move as the Falcons work toward a Matt Ryan contract extension. Clabo started all 100 games he appeared in and made one Pro Bowl during his seven-year career with the Falcons, but was owed $4.5M in each of the next three seasons. In-house replacement Lamar Holmes will make just $480K in 2013. Still, it's surprising to see ProFootballFocus' No. 5 right tackle from a year ago get axed. Clabo will turn 32 in October, but there are plenty of teams in need of a 6'6/329 mauler. He joins Andre Smith and Eric Winston in a surprisingly loaded free agent right tackle market.
I'd really like to see us build our o-line back up over the next few years. I think a lot of the 2009-2010 success on offense was due to having an above average to great offensive line.
Im on the fence, not sure how I would handle this. The old Jet fan in me say get him and now with the way they are building I say build in the draft. Plus we dont have a lot of cash.
Jake is right. if we have to sign a RT there are alot in FA. lets grab one a bit younger for a cheaper price. only reason i say pick up a RT FA is to compete will howard AND its for the sake of saving draft picks looking at it we are really low at HB(goodson can handle it though) TE(NO ONE WITH TALENT) ROLB S(Think dawan is still out there wondering about) its true its time to stop thinking we still have cap WE DONT ! its gone. it wasnt alot. we signed Garrard,Barnes,Goodson,Hillard and maybe 1 other i cant remember. maybe thats why we havent signed another QB to compete we dont have any cap we let Palmer go and we let Kolb go. not that i was crazy about them but i seriously doubt we sign anyone else. plus with the new rule saying cap rolls over. look for idzik to hit the fence for the rest of FA and so on.
Brave new world for the NFL. QB, LT, WR on offense. Everybody else is going to have issues getting paid after 30 unless they are Hall of Fame bound. I think the rookie wage scale and the flat cap are going to produce a really different talent structure over the next few years.
Yup. Overall it might be good for the NFL, maybe we'll see less of the "stupid owner/GM" tries to build dream team with washed up vets strategy.
Whom in the Jets organization stated that they were not contending for 2013? No NFL team, especially in this era where you can go from the bottom of the heap to the playoffs in one season, will admit to that. Going from 6-10 to a 9-7 wild card team is not a big hurdle. They don't have to sign players in their prime to prove that they are looking to make the playoffs.
I understand that, but even then we have both OT spots accounted for and enough cap space to sign probably one vet. Do we fill a hole at OG, TE or S or bring this guy in even though we have Howard at RT? Doesn't make sense to me. Then looking at things thru his eyes: Why would he sign with us over obvious contenders?
If the Jets could get Andre Smith at half what he's looking for or $4.5M a season he'd be worth the investment. Clabo just isn't worth more than a 1 year stopgap contract and even then at a low salary. The idea of trying Austin Howard at RG is reasonable and if the Jets managed to get a RT in the draft or via free agency it would probably be worth a try. Howard's problems are in pass protection.
