People that criticize Idzik at this point are simply clueless, most of which could not manage to orchestrate a one car funeral. Yet they are waxing eloquent about the money he should be dishing out. Are they even remotely aware as to what his longer term plan is? Do they know what he is thinking about doing and how long will it take to get this ship back on course? Do they honestly think that he does not know what a mess we are in with Sanchez's contract, the lack of depth and the money problems? To fix the issue long term it takes careful, small steps and not going apeshit over free agents that want the big payoff. Can someone please look at Washington till this past year, the Raiders, Philly, and many others, and see what not building through the draft will do for you. Of course it cannot be done in one year, and no shit yes, it requires someone that knows how to daft. Hummm? Seattle comes to mind.
Hitting and missing on draft picks is often just a matter of who you have on the roster already and how the competition goes in camp. The reason that players routinely get cut by one NFL team and resurface at another as good players is that there aren't enough jobs to go around and teams will tend to keep a 26 year old with a proven performance level over a 22 year old who doesn't clearly beat the 26 year old out. Deep veteran rosters have a tendency to suppress the arrival of young talent on the roster unless the young guy is really good. In that light I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the Jets draft 4 or 5 starters in this draft. There are a lot of positions where there's no incumbent to hold the young guys back. No guy to play 2% better but have a track record that makes him the much safer player for a coach who wants to win right now. The young guys have a lot more upside potential than that 26 year old also, if not quite as much predictability for 2013.
