Compared to four years ago, this team is in much worse shape. They are not even treading water. What direction do you think the franchise has been going in? An improving one?
You make valid points. I guess I'm not too worried because I don't think a team is going to overpay for Revis and I don't see us trading him just to get him off the team. So I think he stays here by default (kind of like Sanchez) You are missing the obvious plan of the Jets. Currently they are trending downwards but at some point, the only place to go will be up. Brilliant plan. (sarcasm. Really, they are trending downwards the last 2 years and probably a 3rd before things get brighter)
megatron, flacco,ap,mario. none of thos guys held out twice in the first 5 years of their careers.none of them thresatened to hold out again 3 seconds after signing another deal. the only reason revis will not holdout this year is the knee andthe holdout clause in his contract. i believe if he was healthy or didnt have that clause he would be talking holdout again. you see, revis doesnt think about what he made the last 2 years. all he sees is this year he will make 6mil and that is not enough for a player of his caliber. nevermind he was the highest paid player by average. the fact that he is not the highest every year is an injustice to him.
I wont fault Revis for holding out, I understand it after his 2009 season he had, holding out as a rookie is something I dont agree with but thats irrelevant at this point The point is you cant expect dude to sit back and watch other players that he's better than get better deals than he has. Honestly All Tanny had to do was make him the highest paid defender in 2009 and put that clause in his contract that if he held out the contract is null and void instead of that front loaded deal and then promising him they'd go back to the table in a few years People also saying the Jets are better or the same without Revis are also dumb as hell. We won 4 out of 14 games he didn't play in. The Patriots won 11 games without Brady were they better or the same without him This entire situation is getting annoying, what if Cromartie goes back to his inconsistent self, what if Kyle doesn't hold up on the outside, who's playing the slot, what if we dont bring back Landry, what if we dont get top flight pass rushers then what.
LMAO - you think people file into the stadium to see Revis? The guy's a great player, but he's not even an "exciting" Deion Sanders-style corner (or even Rod Woodson when he was returning kicks). He's workman-like. Here's one sentence nobody has ever uttered in their lives: "I'd get up and go get another beer, but I'm afraid I might miss what Revis is going to do."
Only players I feel are worth the type of $ Revis wants are QB's and top notch pass rushers. Hopefully we can get a few high picks and make wise choices with them so we can start building a team that consistently competes.
yes i can expect him to honor the contract he signed. he knew the structure of the deal and accepted it. if he didnt like the fact that the number drops in 1 year although the average was still acceptable he shouldnt have signed it. if thats what he wants he should play every year on a 1 year deal.and that is the crux of the problem with him. every team front loads or backloads deal to gain relief in different years based on other players contracts. you cant trust revis to honor such deals which holds the team hostage.
Let's suppose you are Revis: You've got 3 options - 1) play out your Jets contract this year, playing for $6 million, while risking injury prior to free agency in 2014, 2) agree to a trade & earn $11-15 million this year + a long term deal, or 3) settle for $8-10 million per year on a Jets long term contract which keeps you in the NY market so that you can earn millions in passive income from advertising for Nike, etc after your playing days are done. If you are thinking long term, the answer is obviously option #3.
Bingo! if we ship off Revis without even discussing a deal with him it would be a huge mistake. it also sends a message to other players that we get: if we don't wanna give one of the best players in the league the time of day why should I go here? we can pay Revis.
well yeah we've been absolute shit for the past 2 years and have been the laughing stock of the nfl. but i don't say its because of woody johnson
exactly this proves to everyone that we're not paying anyone big deals and will pretty much be operating like a small market team  I hate how people think the only guys who deserve big deals are pass rushers. I watched the San Francisco pass rush be non-existent in the Super Bowl while they're #1 corner got ate for breakfast by Anquan Boldin. I watched the Patriots lose to the Giants because their corners could hold up vs the Giants WR's Our team has built their interior pass rush up, we got our pair of ILB's, 3 corners who work well together and likely a nice pair of safeties coming in. We dont even need stud edge rushers, above average edge rushers who can hold up in the run game will put this D over the top. I for one think having strong corners is way more important than having a strong edge rusher. Being able to put 7 in the box and disguise your blitz is much more appealing then dropping everyone back and rushing 4 which is what this fan base wants to do
I don't mean this as any sort of attack, but after reading your last few posts, I've come to the conclusion that you are on drugs or emotionally handicapped.
When you have Bryan Thomas and Calvin Pace rushing the passer that happens. I guarantee you next year our OLB's no matter who they are will improve our 3rd down efficiency
I'd be careful with your guarantee on that.. You may change your mind after an offseason Revis trade and when you see what 3rd downs are like with Kyle Wilson on a top WR and a rookie rushing the passer. Just cause things have been bad doesn't mean they couldn't get worse.
my feeling is we return the same defense with Davis replacing Scott, Ellis in for Pouha, a rookie OLB, a vet OLB and Landry still at Safety. That speed is hard to deal with.
This is why people said Woody doesn't want to pay Revis, because he hasn't yet when Revis was a dominant player (he may still be post-injury). If he was going to pay him big money he would have done it after the Hard Knocks holdout, instead they came up with a 'band-aid'. They basically exchanged two years of him not holding out for giving up franchise tag rights. Is it because Woody's cheap? Meh, it's not like we haven't had a super-high payroll. Is it because Woody took the holdouts personally? Maybe. Is it because they just believe you can't pay a corner, QB money? I don't really buy that argument, since you don't HAVE a QB to pay 'QB money', at least not until the tail end of whatever deal Revis signs.
Well, i certainly hope they don't trade him just to get rid of him. Perhaps Woody will come to his senses rather than look like a laughing stock for giving him up too cheaply. But when it comes to Woody and dumb moves, you never know.
