One thing trotter is not including. The Niners have a need at corner, and far more draft picks than they do available slots.
12 + 3 compensatory (can't be traded) equals 15. They will draft some, but not all 15 will stay with the team. Smart thing would be to consolidate the picks and get some real value. (31, 34 and 78 for Revis? I don't think that's too tall an order.)
Do we even trust the scouting department not to waste the Revis picks? Revis is on track to being an all time great folks
Jim Harbaugh even said that the 14 players that they draft arent all going to make the team, and thats before they added KC's 2nd. Since they have so much depth, they are going to have to either trade up, trade picks for a player (Revis), or end up cutting many of those draft picks. Honestly, Revis does more for their team than anyone else in this draft would. Assuming he comes back healthy, he would be an immediate impact unlike many other draft picks that take time to develop.
My question is do you REALLY think someone is going to pay that price? I know you want that price, but do you realistically think that is the haul you will get for Revis?
Gives them more chances to get it right. And potentially, if the 2 extra picks are used right, could have more of an impact than Revis for much less the cost. If SF wants to be that foolush to trade a haul for Revis, we have to do it
The reason Cro hasn't demanded Revis money is 50% of Cro's checks go to Uncle Sam and the other 50% go to Child Support. Cro's been playing for free for the last 3 years.
SF really would be our best trade partner, and really ups the intrigue on potentially moving Revis. One thing many forget tho, trading Revis pre '13 draft actually means a 3 mil cap increase for the NYJ. Add in roughly 2 mil more to sign the extra picks, and that's 5 mil cap increase. So it's not like trading Revis means re-signing Landry, Devito, Braylon, etc, or any other FA's. It also means we could not trade Cro obviously, which would free up over 10mil cap. We'd actually be looking to extend Cro in 2014, for i'm sure higher than 10mil per if he plays another good season. It's possible Cro ends up getting close to what Revis will actually end up getting (he's not getting 16mil from anyone). I'm all for trading Revis is the value is right, and SF might be the team in a position to provide that value. But the decision to move Revis is very layered in complexity, which many don't seem to realize.
So instead of asking to get paid in big bills, why not get small bills and a conditional pick? So we cant get the 1-3 media is hyping. Get the high second round and 3-4 lower ones... maybe with a conditional. go for quantity and draft well. I'll take 5 $20's everyday over a $100 bill. In fact $100 bills annoy me. Revis has got to go. Twice shown he could care less about anything but money. Great player... Never ending succubus.
I was under the assumption that trading Revis pre draft will still hurt us in cap space, where as trading him after saves few mil and only hurts us in cap hit in 2014. Also just a few notes: 1) If 49ers would trade 31,33 and another 3rd Id be ecstatic and in this draft we would be able to fill spots at OLB/DE, OL, RB,S and TE with first 5 picks.Huge in rebuilding year. 2) Why would 49ers trade for Revis so much when they could possibly get Charles Woodson or Asomougha/Rodgers-Cromartie for less if/when cut. I know they aren't Revis but they are upgrades over current guys and they don't have to break the bank for them, especially if renting for a year since this is their window. If I was a Niners fan, Id rather go there than trade awaya 1st rounders , top 2nd rounder and a 3rd for Revis. With there team a quality guy at CB WITH those picks would be better than just Revis. 3) IF Jets do trade Revis predraft and get picks mentioned, do we go after Milliner at #9 to straight replace Revis instead of OLB? Acquire multiple (31,33,3rd rounder + Milliner) > Revis. Makes team better at those 4 guys would be cheaper per year than Revis alone.
Yes, trading Revis pre-draft, as everyone is speculating here, will cost us even more in 2013 cap space. So while we'd gain draft picks, it would inhibit us even more in terms of re-signing our FA's or picking up new FA's.
I would think they feel as if they have a good window now until teams catch on to how to stop their offense. Why think about future when your team now is built to win the SB. The Jets are rebuilding for future, so we need to think smart, where as SF can afford to take a risk on Revis for picks they dont need to fill holes in. How about compensation for FA next year. Say we don't sign any "all star" FA because we don't have money, but than Landry,Greene,Keller all have quality years. We can potentially add 3 mid range compensation picks plus the high picks we already have if this season is considered rebuilding. We aren't winning anything this year, and our cap space is hell, so FA are all going to be low valued/vet minimum guys to fill roster spots. We aren't going to get guys to come here to win or play for Rex like we thought. IF we can get 31,33,plus a 3rd for this year,+ our own picks, we could replace 6 positions ( OLB/OL/RB/TE/S/CB) all who would be starters for possibly less than resigning our FA. AND IF we decide to trade/cut Holmes, you can even through in a WR there too(Patterson at 9, Allen,Woods). Than next year draft your Franchise QB and probable contenders again.
The trade just makes sense on both sides. Yes, San Fran normally doesn't spend big money on FA's but Revis isn't just any old FA. This guy is perfect for them in literally every way, in the exact same way he was perfect for the Jets until they screwed themselves over with the cap. He is the perfect professional athlete, and he will lock down every #1 wideout while they actually have a pass rush unlike the Jets. They literally have almost no real holes on their roster, and they know they won't be able to keep an all star roster like this forever so they need to take advantage of that right away. Revis is the type of player you want signed long term even at his cost, because he will be an impact player for years to come, not just an everyday need based acquisition for a guy who will likely just be an overpaid stopgap. Revis is worth that much to the right team, and the 49ers are the right team. Honestly who thinks the 49ers won't win the SB next year if they get Revis? All 4 of their starting LB's played at a pro bowl level along with Justin Smith on the line. Combine that with Revis and Carlos Rogers at CB, Donte Whitner and either Dashon Goldson or another safety and it's a no brainer for the best defense in the NFL and then they've still got a solid O-line to block for Kaepernick, Gore, Lamichael James, Crabtree, and Vernon Davis. They're entire draft is pretty much for depth anyway, so they can go BPA all the way down the line and still be building for the future anyway. For the Jets it makes sense because honestly if we keep Revis, it pretty much ensures we won't be competitive again until he is past his prime anyway. Trading him frees up a lot of space for 2014, we desperately need the picks and we have a strong secondary without him especially if we re-sign Landry. If we draft Tyrann Mathieu I'd be ok with Cro/Wilson Matthieu in the slot and Landry as our secondary. With the 9th overall pick we grab Deion Jordan to finish our pass-rush, and we will have a few options of how to fill out a few other needs with the 31st and 34th with out being forced to reach. I expect to go O-line and offensive skill player with those two, most likely WR but maybe RB or TE if one is the far better player at those slots.
We can get more from SF because they have a solid team already and missing a few pieces. With the 2 maybe 3 picks from SF we can get 2-3 instant starters. Than add our 3 picks, means we can have 6 starters making an impact in '13. Frees up space in '14 for our Franchise QB and to make play for quality FA to help plug in holes. If we wait till after draft to save $$ for '13 cap, than we would only get future picks for '14. The defense played great this year w/o Revis because Rex is a defense genius. He can make decent guys good and good guys great, hence why Im starting to think go for Patterson at #9 or trade down and grab maybe 3rd or 4th best OLB in mid round and another 2nd/3rd rounder to help fill holes. I love Revis but trading him now can get us a new starting RB/S and a quality TE or WR.
