Nope....Steve Serby....New York Post....December 15, 1980....the Jets finished 4-12 after a 'bad' 8-8 followed a 'good' 8-8. Substitute "RICHARD TODD" for "THE QB" and "MATT ROBINSON" for "THE BACKUP QB" and you could just as easily be talking about Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow. Oh yeah, the Jets ditched a good OC for NONE (Walt Michaels called the plays) before they brought in Joe Walton....A PROVEN PLAY CALLER !!! and Todd cut his interceptions by more than half the next 2 years. The next 2 years, the Jets made the playoffs and went to the AFC CG in 1982. Just sayin......
Sanchez must go. Did that quarterback post the most turnovers in a two year span? If he did, then I see your point. I'm betting he didn't, and you would do anything to see Sanchez take snaps in the green and white.

Can't argue with fanatics! Most of fan-base is clueless, they don't understand so much of the QB position is about confidence, system, players surrounding the QB & coaching....Sanchez will be just another player thrown under the bus (because the expectations & lack of patience won out)...
Todd showed a lot in '81 & '82 to post some good numbers after a terrible '80. He had arguably worse numbers than Sanchez in '80 30 picks and 42 sacks 81 & 82 were very good years for NY Jets. But you can't use that as a basis to think that Sanchez will turn it around like Todd did. Todd eventually regressed and had to be traded. Todd overcame great adversity to achieve success, including broken ribs in '81. As a person and based on character and courage, he was miles ahead of Sanchez. I don't see Sanchez coming around like Todd did in '81 & '82
Sanchez had the potential to be a decent qb....never elite but def. in the middle of the pack but the Jets ruined him... My biggest problem with sanchez is his leadership. When have you ever seen him yell at a wr for screwing up a route? or yell at anyone period? When have you seen him firing guys up on the sidelines? Never
Todd probably never plays for the Jets again if Matt Robinson hadn't injured his thumb fooling around before the 79 season and hiding it from Michaels after he was named the starter. The Raider game in the 82 playoffs was a thing of beauty for Todd. Not unlike Sanchez game against the Pats in the 2010 playoffs.
It's a nice thought and probably some truth to it but I don't see Sanchez having the mental toughness to do this. He has all the physical tools to be a good NFL QB but lacks way too much mentally. He's way too fragile to be what most Jets fans wish he was. To me he doesn't seem to have that fire that the best have. I'll be very interested to see what happens when he leaves NYC.
Hard to know about his mental makeup he has been handled that badly by this team and he's still very young. He showed alot of mental toughness against the Pats in the playoffs in 10'. I'm not a beliver in all the tools and never have been. I don't like his size or his release and those are critical tools in today's NFL. Still he may not suck as badly as we think he does if he gets a chance to get coached up and play down the road.
He was way more ravaged. The only way people could get their frustrations out was to boo him off the field and throw hotdogs at him.
Something's wrong with his arm too. He doesn't have the zip he used to have. I think he's been dumped on his shoulder too much.
He was never the same after getting the crap beat out of him in Baltimore last year. I blame that on Schotty. With Mangold out and Hunter at RT, the Jets should have come out in a run oriented conservative offense. Instead, Schotty continued to go with the 2011 pass oriented offense and used the empty back field. The result was that Sanchez got hit about a dozen times - in the back, in the head, in the shoulder. He was hung out to dry that night and the regression began.
I agree he had more confidence back then but he also had a way better team and season in general. He is pretty strange in the fact he has played better with the more pressure (ie playoffs). I don't know he's a mystery to me lol. He'll throw a pick a pop warner player wouldn't throw on one play then throw an all-pro type play the next.
The NFL has been around since 1922. The first of those type of articles probably first appeared in 1923. Hopefully the Jets get it right in the new GM hire, and hopefully they improve their draft skills. I don't know if Sanchez is emotionally tough enough to deal with all the pressure to perform here, and if that's not the problem - confidence and leadership rather than physical tools. If it is, he's not bouncing back too quickly from these last 2 years... But, we'll see how it all plays out. The new managment team is going to take a little time to put together, and until that happens, the coaching staff is up in the air. I know it seems silly to even mention this, but we probably just have to have a little patience until we the new people in place, and what moves they decide to make.
If Todd didn't lead the league in turnovers for 79-80 he had to be close. He had 33 TDs and 52 interceptions. He also fumbled 17 times, although I can't find out how many he lost. His passer rating before 1981 never got above 66. Take a look at Alex Smith's career before last season and tell me he was not completely useless and ready for the scrap heap. Testaverde was a human turnover until Parcells got hold of him in 1998 (and Foley got hurt). I'm not saying I want Sanchez to start, but I do think he was ruined by the Jets the past two years.
The problem with your last sentence is this year was basically like every other Sanchez year statistically, it was basically right on his career average. He's had one season where he had a high TD number, last year, but every other statistic was right around his career average. I mean you can just about take the numbers from any of his seasons and plug them in to another of his seasons and basically be the same, with the exception of the one statistical anomoly of the TD's last season.
