Much different perspective from Bob Wichusan and Greg Buttle, who follow the team all the time as opposed to the TV guys who come-and-go: (1) They literally didn't know some of the guys on the offense, esp. the WR's. They mispronounced names and expressed 'surprise' at some of the names on offense. They sounded like they wanted to laugh but were afraid ESPN might get a call from the Jets hierarchy. (2) They noted that Kerley was supposed to be a #3 or #4 WR. He was the #1 today. (3) Buttle looked at some wide-angle shots of the passing plays when he had time (timeouts, commercial breaks, etc). He said that WR's were not getting separation. He didn't absolve Sanchez, but he said he was not sure what the guy should do when the #1, #2, and #3 options were all covered. (4) Said WR's were still lining up wrong (2 guys in motion penalty, for instance) and clearly did not know how to run the routes. Noted that passes to Braylon Edwards, even when off, were in the vicinity but not with alot of the new guys picked up the last 2 months. (5) Buttle thinks Sanchez can be salvaged, but thinks Sparano has to go. Said the playcalling was a disaster and they need a COORDINATOR, not an ex-head coach looking for a job before he gets another HC job...and not an offensive assistant looking for a promotion. They need a COORDINATOR like Joe Walton helped Richard Todd improve dramatically (30 INTs in 1980....2 good years after that). Buttle said the Jets in 1980 lost faith in Todd but that when Walton came on board -- even after the 0-3 disastrous start in 1981 -- they believed in him. He said a 180-turnaround with Sanchez is just as possible.
When you're the worst QB in the league, you can't be salvaged. Injuries...excuses. Every fucking team has them. Romo scored touchdowns using his number #3 receiver after Bryant got hurt. Separation...doesn't excuse throwing an INT to a guy RIGHT in the chest. If Sanchez doesn't see anything, why in his fourth year, doesn't he throw it to the sidelines...or SHOCK HORROR scramble. He just throws it up for grabs. Some of his throws were overthrown, underthrown, etc...those guys were making circus catches.
I'm not sure what to make of Sanchez. His regression has been a big time disappointment and I really do lean towards cutting bait with him...I feel he has talent but he may have been damaged beyond repair...aka David Carr syndrome. Yes the offensive gameplan ain't help him at all, and the offensive weapons were, quite frank, offensive.
Well don't lean to hard because he isn't going anywhere, The 17 million dollar cap hit we would endure if we cut him would haunt this franchise for the next 5 years
Kerley proved himself to be a legit NFL receiver this year. He is not a 4th receiver. He's fantastic and somewhere between a 2 and a 3...but nowhere near elite.
The Kerley lay today is a great example of issues with the offense, Sanchez, the skill level of players. Sanchez gets a lot of heat for being late with throws, staring guys down, being off target. Now I agree with those things, but you have to look at why. Kerley today is running a simple in pattern, Sanchez releases the ball expecting kerley to make his cut and come across the face of the defender. Kerley looks to stumble a bit and cut his route at an angle behind the defender. This leaves Sanchez throwing to a spot there a receiver is supposed to be, but will never arrive. Kerley did the same thing on a comeback sideline route against the Titans on the sideline. When you have receivers running questionable routes that are based on timing and crispness and you as a Qb try to execute with routes being run like that is is very tough when they aren't. You hold the ball a bit longer to make sure guys are going where they should, your footwork gets screwed up, you throw high, you are off target, you look awful. I see a QB that needed to have Holmes, Hill, Kerley, and Keller all healthy this season to havea chance. Instead he had Kerley, Cumberland, Schilens, Gates, Reuland ,White, tom from the equipment staff, little joe who handles shoe laces, and the tee boy.
How come he didn't do those in 2009 and 2010 ???? You're telling me he forgot how to read defenses all of a sudden ????
I must have missed where David Carr led his team to 9-7, 11-5, and 8-8 seasons....and was 4-2 in 6 road playoff games, outplaying Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. I know, Sanchez was lucky.
Finally, someone who gets it. Go back and read the Boston papers of why Belichick and Brady cut Chad Johnson out of the offense. Know why ??? Because Johnson couldn't run the routes correctly. Guess how off he was in running the routes ?? 20 feet ? 10 feet ? 6 feet ? TRY 3 feet !!! Yeah, Brady told the OC and Belichick that Johnson wasn't getting to within 3 feet of the spot in the set time like Welker and the rest. And that 3 feet was the difference between a 3rd-and-7 being completed and a drive continuing or the punting team coming on the field. Johnson was a big-time receiver who ran a route like HE WANTED in Cincy and Palmer got him the ball. Johnson did not run set-routes and go to spots. That WAS the Patriots offense and Johnson's inability to adapt after 10 years of being able to 'wing it' was why B & B got rid of him. Anybody who think that getting rid of Sanchez -- and even Sparano -- without addressing this fundamental and basic element of a passing offense is dooming their team to another 5-10 years of mediocrity. Think about all the times you've said "How come these teams can throw screens, downfield, etc...." It's about running the RIGHT ROUTES and the Jets don't have guys who can do that. BTW, that includes Holmes, but at least he has talent. Edwards can run routes. Cotchery could run routes. Brad Smith could run routes. Maybe that's why, when the Jets had those other 3 WR's, we were preparing for the playoffs instead of the offseason.
Sigh...you'll never understand. Sanchez is a poor QB. Stop trying to defend him. It seems as though when you think the sycophants are gone, another pops up. At least you're not telling us we deserve Rich Kottie
I agree with this to an extent, But it's hard to get that message across now a days with the way it's been
Did you say that in 2009 and 2010 ??? I also didn't favor getting rid of Schottenheimer, nor did I want Burress or Mason or Sparano. Having played the game, I know something about continuity and the little things that make or break a team. This team is fixable, guys. We need 2 faster LB's on defense, that's all. On offense, we need alot more but if we get 1/2 that fixed in 2013 we can be back in the playoffs, fix the rest in 2014 and we can be talking SB. I think Rex thinks that, too.
Sanchez is broken. I do think he had a chance to be a great Jets QB, and they completely destroyed him. I also think that he will get another shot on another team in the future, and I look forward to seeing if a better situation helps him. But theres no way they can open up that stadium next year with him starting. It would be dangerous at that stadium if he struggled to start. So time to just move on and break down this whole thing. Besides Rex.
I'm not a Sanchez defender nor do I think he will be a legitimate starter for the Jets, unfortunately, but aren't you a new Jets fan this year? You didn't see Sanchez when he was a decent qb in 2010, so you don't really know his potential, especially in the playoffs. I blame the team for Sanchez's regression just as much as I blame Sanchez himself. The wrs are a big part of that.
