I know this year has been pretty bad for our special teams, but Westhoff had a great career and a great run here with the Jets. Hopefully the players can send him off with something special on Sunday. A game winning TD from the special teams unit would be outstanding. Loved this guy on the Dolphins...Was pissed when we let him go in 2001...Coincidentally, that's when our decade long love affair with mediocrity began...
Considering what he's fought through, he's a far tougher man than I. Bad season, but overall, a very good coach. I'll miss him.
If memory serves me right Kowitca, who I guess is the new Special Teams Coordinator, is the Army veteran. Nice.
Westhoff is my favorite person in this Jets organization. He's a tough nosed grumpy old man, and I mean that endearingly. Thanks for everything coach, we'll miss you.
Earlier in the year he hinted he might come back because of the disaster this year is. Being a guy with brains, he's probably waiting to see if they cut Sanchez loose before he makes his decision. No point in coming back next year to subject himself to the same garbage.
Westhoff is a living legend and I hate to see him go. I wish him the very best, he was one of a kind.
this guy is what you want in a st coach.. he was absolutely amazing, always had his guys prepared and always made guys better under him. we could trot anyone out there to return kickoffs and they were successful. part of it was his willingness to march up to the head coach and say i need real players on special teams, not just the 53rd man on the roster. the league as a whole will miss mike westhoff.
This makes no sense because the special teams did not play at a Westhoff level regardless of who the QB was/is. Unless you thought Sanchez played special teams, then I don't know what you are watching.
Pretty much the only coach in this organization with class, loved watching him during Hard Knocks too. I hope the ST doesn't shit the bed like they did last game.
Westoff is shot and special teams have sucked all year . It's been the worst Special Teams year since he has been the coach of it. Maybe his heart just wasn't in it anymore, either that or the players fucked it up how do you tell when it comes to Special Teams, Theres so many people on the field at once to say who's fault it is it all happens so fast
definitely going to miss him. he's been with the team for a long time and his story is obviously something else. Thanks for everything Westy.
Seriously? That's one heck of a statement. You are right though, STs has sucked all year, but I put this down to personnel rather than Westy. Kotwica has worked with Westy for a while now and I'm confident that he'll do fine. I don't believe that Westy won't just be at the end of the phone
He's an old man with an artificial hip who can barely get around. I'd contend that there's a big difference between coming back for one more year to a team that you think has a chance to contend and a team that has cashed it in before the year even started by committing to start the proven worst QB in the NFL. Maybe that makes no sense to you.
Here it is for anyone who wants to see it (highly recommended): http://www.newyorkjets.com/photos-a...e-to-Go”/93a728d8-ba7d-4116-8a18-3cc8b82113a7 I for one will miss these Westy pressers immensely. They were a can't miss every week for me - always entertaining, funny, and raw. Often you got the most no-holds-barred critiques about players and the team as a whole from him, and this one was no different. Highlights: - He basically threw quite a few "unnamed" players under the bus for specific screwups this year on certain plays (by "unnamed" I mean he provides so much detail that all you have to do is go back and see the play he's talking about and you can tell exactly who screwed the pooch). - He not so subtly rips the offense a new one at the end, basically saying that the reason Kerley has to fair catch everything on the ten is because the shitty offense kept leaving the other team with 40 yard line starting field position, so even when the defense did their job they could still pin us back. - Wants to grab a niche TV gig with special teams, similar to the role that the officiating specialist has on the Fox broadcasts. I would LOVE that. Farewell Westy. You will be missed. P.S. Reserving my Westoff Adopt-a-Jet 2013 now since we didn't get them this year and I picked him...dibs!
Westhoff made himself from nothing. He grew up in difficult circumstances and when he friends were committing crimes and things like that he went against that and found a place in football. He was a great Special Teams coach (tough year this season), with a tough mentality and he will be greatly missed. Last thing to note, Mike continues to give back to his community and he should be recognized for his philanthropic nature as well. Good bye Mike. Thank you for your service.
