Need a new OC with full control over that offense and the players decisions (GM type ability). Rex has no clue how to oversee/manage an offense or does he really seem interested in doing it. He said last year he would get more involved in the offense and I think it didnt turn out very well, with his decisions or lack there of made this year.
Brilliant? Rex has done a downright horrible job on every level this year except for maybe the defense. This team is in shambles, and while it may not be Ryan's fault entirely, the play on the field most certainly is. There's plenty of teams with crummy talent, but none lose games as embarrassingly bad as the Jets. For the last month, all Jets highlights have been accompanied by circus music. Brilliant. That's a good one.
One word of caution before getting too heated about what would be the best thing for the Jets to do. They rarely do anything that makes sense. Just imagine the most unlikely scenario and that's what will happen.
and the Pats should have fired Pete Carol. oh that's right they did and look what happened Steelers really wish they had Bill Cowher.
The 49ers did that in 2011 with Trent Baalke and Jim Harbaugh and that seems to have worked out fine.
Rex is the best HC this team has had in well over a decade. Firing him is stupid. Mr.T. has also been good - he needs to present a plan to improve the team- if he can't so so I would fire him IF we can hire a 5 Star GM - Parcells. If we can't replace Mr.T w/a rock star GM then he should be retained
So basically, the OP thinks Rex needs to go because he defends his players to the media. Seriously? So the main problem with the team is that the coach backs them up publicly? I really don't understand that. What makes you think he doesn't discipline the guys in practice or chew them out when they make big mistakes? Are you privy to inside information that we are not? You know exactly how Rex pushes the guys and works them on the field? This guy is your classic back seat driver / couch GM. Let's look at this realistically. 1. We've only had 1 losing season under Rex. 2. We've had 2 deep playoff runs under Rex, something that hasn't happened under any other Jets coach. And that's WITH Mark Sanchez. 3. He turned our defense from middle of the pack to a consistent top 5. Even losing the best player on our team and a handful of other injuries, our defense is still near the top. 4. Total record under Rex: 38-31. The bottom line is that the only stat that really matters for a head coach is wins. 5. This season was ridiculous with injuries. Holmes, Keller, Pou'ha, Revis, Hill, Schillens, Ellis, Powell, McKnight and those were just the bigger ones. Despite all of THAT, we still finish respectful near .500 if we beat the Bills. That's really not so bad at all. People act like the team went 4-12. 6. Lack of talent on offense is on Tannenbaum, not Rex. He tied up too much money in the wrong places, and we lost a considerable amount of talent as a result between 2010 and 2012. They pretty much wrote a book on how not to develop a raw rookie inexperienced QB. Lack of depth is also on Tanny because he trades so many picks away. 7. Who was in charge of developing Mark Sanchez? It certainly shouldn't be the head coach. Why aren't people calling for Cavanaugh's head like they are for Rex's? To me, if anybody, he should be first to go, especially if we're considering drafting a QB. Sanchez regressed when the weapons around him regressed. Sanchez has not developed well at all. Cavanaugh's gotta go. I just don't see the justification in firing Rex. I doubt it happens, even with a new GM. I don't care that it "doesn't usually happen". It's the Jets. They tend to defy odds like that. You can blame Rex for defending Sanchez and for the offensive regression since he oversees the entire operation, but based on the team's record, you can't just kick him out of here like that. I know people are emotional about a bad season, but you can't just judge a coach by his worst year. You have to look at the entire picture, and that picture says that Rex should stay. They will hopefully clean house with the offensive staff, however. Deguglielmo hasn't really proved himself although the line was better this year. Sparano's part of the issue, but you can't just keep installing a new offensive system every year. We'll see who survives, but I think it will be Rex and most of the defensive guys. Who knows, maybe even move Rex to DC since that's his forte. I wish we could get Sean Payton to install an offense for us.
The guys who defend Rex and want him to stay always point to his standing as compared to other Jets coaches - most of which sucked, which is why there are continuity issues. How many Jets coaches left and went on to have success elsewhere? Don't count Bellichick, he was here for one day. The answer, to the best of my memory, is ZERO. Pete Carroll is the closest thing and it took him over 15 years to come back and be a success. What I don't get is why not a single one of you will answer the points brought out by those (like me) who feel that he should be fired because he has no control over the team - they all run their mouths off like he does, they are always flat in big games, and never seem prepared. They commit stupid penalties, they are poor tacklers.............this all falls on the head coach either directly, or by proxy through his choices for assistant coaches. I don't care that he's got a winning record or lucked his way into a couple of championship games - I care about now. And he lost the team last year, obviously lost it this year, waited until the team was dead and buried before benching his obviously-overwhelmed QB, has no concept of an offense despite promising to be more involved after last year's debacle............ So answer my above, and throw in an answer as well to this: what evidence do you have that this guy is not in way over his head as an NFL head coach?
Okay, I'll break it down bit by bit. I'm not sure why you think he has no control over the team. Media quote mines don't mean anything in the big picture of reasons we sucked this year. It's just a reason to dislike his personality rather than his ability to coach. You'd rather have a stickler anal coach like Coughlin or Belicheat that benches his good players in important games for media comments and keeps his players quiet and on a tight leash. I can understand if you prefer that, but again we're talking about personality rather than actual coaching. *In recent times* In 09 and 10 they had several good games against good teams. http://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/penalties-per-game Actually that was one thing we did well this year. We are ranked #3 in the league in fewest penalties per game. In 2010 & 2011 we were 18th, in 2009, 13th. So under Rex it averages out to about 13th in the league, above average. Players make mistakes, but if reduction of penalties are an indication of good coaching, Rex has turned it around big time in this department. Every team commits stupid penalties. Agreed we need linebackers. Where's Tanny with that? How exactly is Rex at fault for our aging overpaid linebackers? So instead of firing the ineffective offensive coaches, you'd rather just chop off the head and be done with it, despite the fact that things are going very well on one side of the ball and he is 39-31. Clearly the problem lies in the QB coach, Cavanaugh and Sparano. I know they were all learning a new system, but I haven't seen us that impotent since Sanchez' rookie year. Leave Rex intact, but clean house on the offensive side of the ball with coaches, especially that shady line coach that came over this year Way in over his head? I don't think so. I think he's got heart and is a good motivator. We've seen it before. There's only so much you can motivate somebody who simply doesn't have the talent to play at a high level. That is the story of the offense this year. Sure everyone comes charging out ready to win, but when you fail to execute you can't just blame it on motivation or being prepared. The problems are on one side of the ball. He's done great and I listed all the reason above already. We saw Rex take Sanchez out and McElroy looked just as bad. There's a reason Rex wanted to stick with Sanchez. He really IS the best QB on the team. Without Holmes and Keller, there just isn't all that much talent on offense. Whoever the QB is, he needs weapons and we severely lacked them this year. Again, that falls in Tanny's department, Mr. trade all of our picks away and give ridiculous contracts to under performing players so we can't ever resign our good free agents.
Always flat in big games? The only big game we came out flat in this year was the second New England game. And things were going fine until Mr. Red zone interception decided to save the day with his turnovers and buttfumbles. From there, it was just the weirdest chain reaction I have ever seen. I doubt that will happen for the next decade or so. Besides that, he's had this team prepared for every big game we had. I hope next year, we have our Thursday night nfl primetime game and be done with it. It's best if our team flies under the radar with 1PM starts. If we play the Pats in Week 17, some good motivation for Rex would be 'Hey guys, let's try to get this game on primetime'. Since that would probably mean divisional implications if that were the case.
And yet Rex is starting the subject of your signature quote. That is why he has to go. Sid had Nancy, Rex has Mark.
I beg to differ with the both of you about them coming out flat. It's not just big games, of which I can name several over the past couple of years. But it's just about every game. They ALWAYS start slow and if they happen to be playing a poor team, they hang around long enough to snatch a victory (Arizona, Jacksonville, almost with Tennessee). It's not new ths year, either. It's been this way for his entire run as a coach. Go check their stats as a first half team compared to the second half.
Nope I disagree with the short term part as I see this at the least to be a 5 year rebuild but more likely 7/10 years. The rest of the post however was terrific
Every big game? Ok, let's work backwards. Were they prepared for Tennesseee two weeks ago? You already mentioned New England. Were they prepared for Seattle after the bye? How about Miami in the final game last year? How about the Giants last year? Philly last year? These were all big games. To further continue, how about Denver in the infamous Tebow game? They came out flat in that game. Three days before that, on national TV at home against New ENgland with the division on the line they got smoked. Year before that, they went to Pittsburgh for the championship game and they found themselves down 24-0 at the half. The New England game before that is the ONLY time this team has been ready and came up big. NEed more? How about further back in 2010 when they went to New England on Monday night with the division on the line once again, and they got hammered, down 21-0 before they even got loose. To say that there's only one big game they've come out slow for is comical. There's only one they came out big for - you got it backwards.
You are dealing with a guy that needs to be deprogrammed by a MD for his man love of the NYJs JMHO:sad:
