If this is indeed it for him, I assure you that very few, if any, will be talkng about the positives 10 years from now. The ass play will live forever, and will serve as a fitting cap to a very unsuccesful run as the QB of the NYJ.
If this is it for him, then he would be a bust. At least he tried, and won playoff games for the Jets, but it never really worked out in the long term. He tried to be great, but sometimes you just Max out. If he does succeed somewhere else I hope it is not against the Jets. Mark Sanchez didn't select himself, you know. He did coddle him self, or or move up in the draft to select him 5th overall. The Jets did. Honestly I hope he ends up in Arizona next year.
Brian Billick in commentary compared him to Joey Harrington. I think Rex Grossman is a better comparison, personally. Mark was a bright kid with a lot of promise who never managed to put it all together.
The problem with comparing Sanchez to Grossman is he had the turnovers of Grossman but none of the upside. Grossman was a gunslinger who could complete passes into small areas something Sanchez is not. grossman could take over a game with some amazing passes into tiny windows then kill you 5 minutes later. Sanchez can only do the latter. Sanchez has only been able to complete passes when his receivers have been left uncovered. If teams play tight coverage on his receivers he has virtually no chance of completing a pass. He simply lacks the accuracy. Not to mention Grossman has much better pocket presence and mobility under pressure. Sanchez can only succeed in an offense that just asks him to hand off and throw an occasional play action pass. Asking him to play in situations where the defense knows he is going to pass is something he is simply not capable of doing. Basically Sanchez represents the worst of all NFL QBS. He makes the incredibly stupid mistakes, lacks accuracy, lacks pocket presence, freezes and panics under pressure, cannot read defense, becomes easily confused, cannot make line calls or audibles, takes unnecessary sacks, holds the ball to long, seems to play large parts of the game with his head down or eyes closed, only looks at 1/3 of the field and leads the league in underthrown and overthrown passes. Sadly, Sanchez is simply not even close to being in the same class as Rex Grossman.
I believed in Mark for 2 and a half years. I blamed the OC for his troubles, and by all means Cavanaugh did him no favors. I just knew that he would shine with a new OC. But it took Plax and Holmes to point out the obvious. Mark just doesn't have it. One hit, and it is over. I will be glad to see the Broadway show tune loving, GQ posing , hot dog eating experiment leave. Adios Mark.
I'll remember Sanchez as: coddled, over-rated, mediocre QB that received all the credit for winning & none of the blame for losing. I'd also remember him as a draft bust comparable to Gholston & Blair Thomas. QB that showed an extemely low football IQ after multiple years in the league & still felt that he was entitled to be a starting QB for the Jets.
I didn't, it was a two part response. Part one about what Sanchez did in the New England playoff game. Part two about what it takes to win a Super Bowl. Rarely if never do the best QBs waltz through the playoffs not relying on their defense , run game, or special teams.
Agree on way overrated, over paid and over coddled, and he is overrated even when he sucked this bad. If he was QB of Patriots - they probably won't make the playoffs, it is not the talent around him that is the problem... HE is the problem. Jet brass turning a blind eye on the situation are protecting their own butts for disastrous pick and financial decision.
I miss the days long before Pennington, that guy sucked worse than sancho, if that's even possible. And will always thinks of sancho as one thing, I big a$$ mistake.
In 10 years time, Sanchez will be retired, having rebuilt his career somewhere like Oakland or Denver and will be better remembered by their fans. Somewhere along the line, he leads his new team past the Jets in the playoffs and we'll be cursing the fact we gave him crap weapons (an dlet the likes of JCo & Braylon leave when they had good rapport with Sanchez).
From the Sanchez era I will remember some great jet playoff wins (bengals, chargers, colts, patriots (especially this one), all the comeback wins in 2010, some heartbreaking losses like the steelers AFC championship game, and a lot of inconsistent frustrating QB play. Sanchez will go down to me as another Jet QB who had some early success that gave you a lot of hope and then never fills his potential.
