Back when we had Rex come to the Jets there was alot of talk about Rex taking Bart Scott or Ray Lewis.

Ray I remember would have come here with Rex, but we shunned him and put our money on Bart Scott.

my question to you all is, if we have Ray Lewis instead of Bart Scott...

Do you think that would have put us over the hump in those 2 great AFC championship years? Maybe Super Bowl?

Hindsight absolutely, we need (ed) his leadership. Funny how Rex talked about coverage skills for Bart Scott. He's the worst at coverage.

Ray Lewis was a great player going over the hill. Bart Scott was a good player in his late prime.

In hindsight if the Jets knew that Scott was going to decline right after 30 then yes Lewis would have been the better choice. Scott might have played well to 33 though and that's the difference between getting full value for a 4 year deal and half a loaf.

The real answer though is neither. The Jets should have drafted a linebacker to play in the middle of that defense the year that Rex took over. They should have moved heaven and earth to find a real pass rusher at ROLB. The failures in the AFC championship games were attributable directly to their failure to make either of those moves.

I say this because against the Steelers, Ray Lewis would have made a bigger difference. he would have made Big Ben think too much on those roll out short passes that killed us on 3rd downs :(

There is NOT a moment I do not think about this! My friend is a Ravens fan so I'm constantly reminded. Our whole Franchise would be different because of him. His presence, leadership and durability are as good as they come! I still can't believe we missed out..

Bart was great for us the first 2 years and like bradway said Ray was headed into the twilight but if we knew Bart would hit the wall after 2 seasons then no doubt about it. I wish we had a leader like Ray, even injured he is on the sidelines leading.

Ray Lewis was a free agent that year and was having problems with the Ravens FO. We had a CLEAR cut shot to get him...

Speculating about what might have been, if we'd signed Ray Lewis,
is all well and good, but the bottom line is that Bart Scott has severely
underperformed his contract, and is an enormous liability every moment
    he's on the field now.

I think we all know by now that if it comes to two players the Jets will always pick wrong.

we had him if we wanted him. Who knew he could play at such a high level for so long? I agree w/ what we did at the time, looking back I think we'd do it differently.

Before we whine too much just remember that we made 2 title games and BVal made 1 since that decision so it wasn't bad for us.

I remember this and at the time I liked taking the younger Bart Scott over Lewis, but looking back on the way things panned out, I can't help but believe that was Rex running his mouth and Lewis never had any plans to come to New York.

Exactly, NOBODY expected Ray to play at this level for his age. Plus, Bart was advertised as baby Ray. We all know how that played out. All we can say is what if.

People are desperate to crap on Rex these days. I mean come on. This shit is from 4 years ago and it's nitpicking.

Just wanted to add: most players decline dramatically after 30. This is not something unique to Bart Scott. What's happening with him is an expected result.

Obviously Ray Lewis is the far superior player. I think people overlook the fact that they play different positions. Scott is and always has been the Ted.

So if Ray came to the Jets instead of Scott, would Harris - who was a top young mike backer at the time have been moved to the Ted position? You know damn well Lewis wasn't.

I think that's a big part of why Scott was taken over Lewis too.

This is logic fail on "Mark Sanchez got us to 2 AFCCG's" proportion.

Just because you made it with Scott does not mean that you wouldn't have also have made it with Lewis. Considering the difference in skill level, you may have also made it further.
