Having a D minded coach (that technically should guarantee an extra edge to the D and not to the O) also plays a part. Injuries haven't helped and Rex's character in NY either... but Tanny has big faults here in how he built the team.
Agree but that is how rex wants his team better d than o. Look at it this way the jets have never been a throwing team even with farve we would run and run.......Picture if we had a saints or giants type of Offensive sceeme or hell even bills. When they need 7 yards for a first down they throw a 10 yard pass and all patterns are past the first down. The jets only run 3-6 yard routes. Giants on 3 and 3 or 3 and 2 throw a 20-30 yard pass to nicks or someone down field. The jets need a whole new offense. Do I think problem is sanchez no, do I think tebow will be better? hell no. Sanchez will be good if you put him on the saints or giants. hell any team he will do better. He needs to throw the ball with 3WR+ keller or 4 wr gun......That is how he will do good and the jets will start winning but that will never ever happen!
Assuming Rex survives this season, the focus this offseason has to be on offensive line and running back (could potentially extend to TE depending on what happens with Keller). The blocking is the most easily fixed and would have the highest impact of any change outside of QB. QB change isn't going to happen due to the salary cap and the lack of QBs in the upcoming draft that are worth an investment. FA is almost out of the question considering how bad the salary cap situation is coming up.
I've grown to dislike Sanchez on many little things (demeanor, footwork & throwing technique, ball placement, ability to read a D, etc...) but I do agree he is put in one shitty situtation. You want to run the ball? Invest in a fucking decent OL and RB!
The problems the Jets have right now is that their investments aren't paying off. On offense the primary investment is the QB. When that investment pays off you are always in the championship conversation. On defense the primary investment is in the pass rush, because that is the only reliable way to put a great QB off his game. The Jets have a weak QB and a weak pass rush and it just doesn't matter what else they have done given those two facts. They could have two of Darrelle Revis back there and the TE's and outlets to the RB's would still be killing them. The slot receiver would still be killing them. The Jets haven't put much talent around Sanchez on offense but that doesn't really matter because in the absence of a great pass rush there is no way Sanchez is beating the top QB's consistently enough even with great help to win a Super Bowl. What the Jets need is new investors making the investments because the current group is high on pork belly futures and korean widgets not the things that are going to pay off at the top end when everything is said and done.

The saddest part is we probably could have just kept Kellen Clemmons and got as much productivity out of our QB as we got from Mark. And saved a crap load of money and young players. We would be a completely different team right now. BTW - the chart in the OP is wrong. We traded our first and second picks and two young players to move up to draft Mark.
The thing that bothers me is that if Rex is such a defensive genius, then he should be able to make a good defense great. That means he shouldn't need as great players as he would need on the offensive side of the ball. If he focused more on building a great offense and even an average defense, he'd go much further than trying to build a great defense and an average offense.
Rex is a defensive scheme genius but he is not good at evaluating talent. He has failed completely at identifying and drafting good defensive players. Another draft with Rex would be a disaster unless he can just stand in the corner and be quite.
I understand, but what I'm saying is that Rex should be able to do more with average defensive talent than he could with average offensive talent. For whatever reason he has a fascination with drafting on the defensive side which shows that he tries to make the defense great while leaving the offense average. This is counter-productive to his strength. Let's say for example that Rex could make a 10 defense into a 5 defense in the same way he could make a 10 offense into a 12 offense. Well then wouldn't it make more sense to make that 10 offense into a 1 offense so that the dropoff is mitigated while sacrificing on the defensive side since you know you can get more out of it than the offensive side? Unless Rex's defenses are only as good as his players and he's overrated?
