Good candidates for GM: Jon Gruden. Pros: Strong personality who fights for his viewpoint. Coached great offensive and defensive ball clubs to successful outcomes. Knows what a good team looks like. Cons: Might not be willing to take the pay-cut. Has blown out wherever he went eventually due to personality conflicts. Is getting near the 50-year old mark where people start to lose their drive. Is a personality because of the exposure as a football analyst. If Woody really wants to win, if he really wants to pack that stadium he'll go out and get somebody like Gruden to run the team and give him a 5 year deal and then sit back and let him earn it. John Idzik. Pros: Strong background in player personnel. Works the finance side of the organization with the Seahawks now. Resume includes player personnel on the strong Buc teams of the late 90's early 00's and in the Cardinals FO during their renaissance leading up to the Super Bowl appearance. Represents the Seahawks at league meetings. Last child is flying the nest next fall, may be willing to relocate again. Cons: At the early 50's mark already. Will be pricey due to working in the Seahawks organization (Seattle pays as much as anybody in the league for talent.) Has worked in low-key positions throughout his career, may not be willing to step into a maelstrom like the Jets. Eric Decosta would indeed be a good candidate as Jets GM but he is locked up tight in Baltimore and will succeed Ozzie Newsome there probably sooner rather that later. John Dorsey of the Packers would be a great pick also but he's tied very tightly to the Packers and the local community and would not consider leaving the Packers.

Maelstrom doesn't imply loser. It implies chaotic and unpredictable. I think that describes the Jets very well at this point. If you'd been working in Green Bay would you want to come into the NY media market as the head of the second team in the area that has decided to talk the talk instead of walking the walk? I have no idea if Gruden would take a GM job or not but he has nothing left to prove as a coach and being a talking head has to be getting old at this point.
Okay good point I thought you were implying the team was a mess. I have been for a new GM but I'm starting to think Tanny won't get fired. His biggest issue was drafting but this years draft and last years are starting to pan out and look a lot better. We would be in better shape now but we went all out to win in 2010 which I'm sure wasn't all his idea and partly Woody's
It doesn't matter what the 2011 and 2012 drafts look like at this point. The Jets next season or two are going to be about the failed drafts from 2008 to 2010. The next GM will get the benefit or handicap associated with 2011 and 2012 because 2014 is about when those will be key. I believe the Jets have added 4 plus players over the last two drafts, if Ellis can stay healthy. I don't think that's going to be enough over the next couple of seasons and that's why I think the Jets trend is downwards. The 2008 to 2010 drafts basically blew out the roster depth and talent and the 2011 and 2012 drafts aren't going to do enough to balance that out in the long run.
Gruden has been hard at work 'creating a brand' as an announcer (ran Jaworski out of the booth in the process), and I bet he fashions himself the next John Madden. I wouldn't be surprised if he never returns to football.
The only reason that I disagree with you is that Gruden has a tendency to endlessly praise every team and every player, regardless of what's happening on the field. Given that we know from his coaching days that he's a short-tempered guy, that suggests to me that he's consciously trying to build bridges in case a good job opens up somewhere.

Holmgren & Polian are bad choices. I'm assuming name recognition is why those two names are constantly thrown out there because it sure as heck aint research. Holmgren - Look @ Seattle when he left & what exactly did he build in Cleveland while he was there?? Polian - is a noteworthy choice 15 years ago but NOT today. What you're looking @ here everybody is the classic bait & switch. You hire Bill Polian and cut him a guaranteed contract. You're expecting the GM who build the Bills & Colts into SB contenders and he'll show up and shake your hand & smile at ya. However, in reality you're hiring his idiot son who's gonna run the operation for dad. Holmgren is actually a better candidate here ... because I think he won't suck as badly.
