read the article yourself. coles made earlier comments on an official jets TV broadcast afte a practice. it was shown on the official site. I'm sure its still there s/w. N.Y. Times Article Adapting to New Coach?s Rules Seems to Bog Down the Jets By DAVE CALDWELL Published: August 29, 2006 HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Aug. 28 ?* The rookie tackle D?Brickashaw Ferguson set 312 pounds in motion by lurching from his stance. But no one else on the Jets? offensive line lurched with him, and Ferguson was whistled for his second false-start penalty in Friday?s loss to the Giants. Eric Mangini, the Jets? first-year coach, summoned Ferguson after he turned a fourth-and-1 into a fourth-and-6 and a punt. Mangini reminded Ferguson about his five-second rule. There is to be no moping, or gloating, five seconds after a play. ?It?s all about transferring to the next play or step,? Ferguson said Monday before the Jets practiced. ?He was just reminding me about it to aid me. That?s all.? Ferguson, a first-round draft choice from Virginia, did not kill any more drives Friday. But the Jets? first-team offense got no closer to the goal line, either. The season opener is Sept. 10, and the Jets do not seem to be gaining much traction. Linebacker Jonathan Vilma was speaking for only the Jets? defense Monday when he said, ?We didn?t have a planned schedule to where we thought we would be.? But he may as well as have been talking about the whole team. Adapting to Mangini?s many rules, not to mention his new systems, appears to have the Jets bogged down. Lately, the Jets sometimes forget about their ?core values,? as Mangini has called them. Tight end Doug Jolley received an unnecessary-roughness penalty for head-butting Giants defensive back Sam Madison after Madison drove him out of bounds a yard short of a first down. ?If you want to make a statement, you make a statement when the ball?s in play,? Mangini said of Jolley. Wide receiver Laveranues Coles, a veteran of six N.F.L. seasons, said Monday that the Jets? recently concluded training camp was ?more brutal than other years.? He said he did not mean that workouts were more punishing. Coles said there were more mandatory team dinners, meetings and weigh-ins than other years. These, he said, were the small things that players usually took for granted. Mangini has put a lot of emphasis on the small things, he added. ?Trust me: I weigh in when I ain?t got to weigh in,? Coles said, smiling. ?That?s the best thing I can do, is to be careful.? Mangini said again Monday that he believed there would be a payoff. He said of Ferguson: ?He?s a resilient guy. He understands the mistakes he made, and he knows that those mistakes are in the past.? Mangini singled out receiver Justin McCareins for a good game in an otherwise lackluster 13-7 loss, and also for an impressive week of practice leading up to the game. McCareins, who was placed on the physically unable to perform list early in training camp after he failed a running test, seemed amused when told of Mangini?s comments. He said he had not become a different player in the span of a week. During the course of training camp, he said, he eliminated many of the mental mistakes he had made earlier. But he said he was no more sure of his role on the team than he was before. ?I?ll take his compliment, and I appreciate his compliment,? McCareins said. ?But it doesn?t mean that much.? Mangini also complimented a marginal player who had impressed him recently by saying, ?Suddenly, the light looks like it?s going on for him.? But Mangini did not want to name the player. He said he wanted to see how bright that light burned. On Sunday, Mangini said he would not name a starting quarterback until after the Jets? final preseason game, Friday against Philadelphia. >>>>And during his news conference Monday, Mangini did not rule out the possibility that running back Curtis Martin, who missed training camp because he had not recovered from knee surgery, would be able to play against Tennessee in the opener. Martin and tackle Trey Teague are on the physically unable to perform list. ?The status could change between now and opening day for either guy,? Mangini said. <<<< The Jets have played three preseason games, and Mangini sounds as if he is no closer to clearing up any of the confusion that hovers over his team like a rain cloud. At one point Monday, Mangini said, ?If you?re wrong, it?s a lot better to all be wrong together.? Asked if he was pleased with the way he was playing, Ferguson said he thought it was still too early in the season. The preseason games have been important, he said, because he is blocking players in different uniforms. ?I?m happy when I make progress,? Ferguson said. ?I?m looking to continue to make progress.?
Show me 1 player on the Jets who said negative comments on Mangini's coaching. Taking words out of context or taking a "beat writers" article is dumb.
It sounds like they are trying to instill more discipline than they had in Camp Herm. Last year's tc was loose, relaxed and the HC was prancing around the field during practice, and they got their asses kicked and noses bloodied in KC. Vilma's comment is thrown in without explanation or context, and it is impossible to know where in the conversation he made a comment about a planned schedule, expecially since the next paragraph talks about mandatory meetings. We'll see if Mangini's detail oriented approach pays off, but these guys are making enough dough that if they have to endure a challenging tc, so be it. I suspect it will be a more mentally tough team as a result of a disciplined tc. Now, if he goes through the whole season with a TC mentality, that could be a problem. But I dont see a problem with running a strict camp. How many times have you heard guys standing in champagne soaked locker rooms in January, saying that the brutal August practices were worth it.
Dude, you're inventing these rumors you're attempting to pass off as truth. If people (players) are annoyed with Mangini it is because he's making them work. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. They get paid an awful lot of money to work, and it is time to work.
"McCareins is back to a familiar role ? competing, and competing well. ... ?I didn?t come into the league being a starter, or even a second-string guy. That is part of the process of being a professional; there are good players here,? he said. ?You have to perform everyday. The coach demands a lot and you have to handle it. You do what you?re supposed to do and be a professional.? I think that is a more accurate read of how the players view Mangini.
Wow probably your most positive post about the Jets and the sad thing is is that it was still negative.:breakdance:
Yes, I've read that before, and the only actually negative player comments I saw were from McCareins... you know, the guy that spent the first day of open TC humiliated riding a stationary bike in front of the press because he had been dogging it. Well tough shit on Justin, show up in shape for camp or admit you have an injury. The Vilma comment if pretty vague until the writer fills in his own version of the context, and the Coles comments aren't negative at all. This is an agendum-driven article, like many we've seen recently.
I for one wasnt shocked when they went in 9-7. The team was so mismanaged for years that it was impossible for them not to be better by just changin the fo and cs. They also changed almost half the team I think. (I cant recall the exact number). I never thought that Herm was that bad -- certainly not nearly as bad as Kotite. (I mean he did make the playoffs a few times -- more than any other coach).
I do remember the first game, against Seattle on the road we absolutely destroyed them, like 41-0. It was striking because it was a team that clearly had better than 1-15 talent, and Kotite was really an awful coach who demanded little in the way of discipline. I think that single game went a long way in giving that team confidence that they could compete. A win in Tenessee would do the same thing. You are never as bad you seem (last year), and usually you are never as good as they claim you are. Likely we have some ups and downs this year, but the great thing is no one really knows.
There is alot of similiarties between 1997 and 2006. The Jets started slow and then went on a role. I remember that year i think you guys beat us at the end of the year and i remember being pissed because of how well that team came along. Eric Mangini learned from Parcells so i wouldn't be surprised if the same happened.
Mangini reminds me alot of a young Parcells. He has no problem getting in a players face and yelling at him opposed to serving bbq
if you think this season will be like 97 then at least i know they might have a shot at the playoffs...just dont give leon johnson the ball
The was the last year Miami swept us, the 2nd game on a controversial ending where down 7 around the Miami 20 Chrebet stretched for a 1st down, clearly got and clearly was down before the ball came free they gave it to Miami and the game was over. The defender was out of bounds, it should never have been ruled an INT.
Let's remember a young Parcells went 3-12-1 in his first year and it took a young Belichick 4 years to have a winning record and reach the postseason.
I agree with you GG. We are a few key players short but if we can win a few that we should not have won, we will see the results of ERIC's labor!
Bellichick had to wait four or five years to get another job and it took him until his second year to have a winning record there. He did have a good team in Cleveland before Modell pulled the rug out from him with the move, but it took him a few seasons as you said. Parcells got to 10-6 in his second year with the Giants.
hey man you should really change that negative attitude about your signature. It's not all Woody's fault.
On this date 9 years ago(wow it's been 9 years already:sad: ) Parcells debuted as Jets coach in the 41-3 thrashing of Seattle.
They hated Bellichek in Cleveland. If I recall correctly there was basically a player revolt. Does anyone else remember this -- or am i making it up.
The defender was out of bounds, it should never have been ruled an INT.[/QUOTE] No replay. Clearly did not have possession.
