It's gonna be interesting to see how he does and whether the O Line will give him space to run the routes.
As a Texans fan I can tell you that you guys will like Grimes. His running style isn't sexy, but he doesn't have any wasted movement and gets upfield quickly. I knew at some point we were going to lose him to someone, and I'm glad its the Jets if that was gonna be the case. He's a pretty good receiver out of the backfield and a beast on special teams. You're getting a player with a lot of upside. Most years he would have made our 53, but with us carrying Holliday as a returner it didn't allow us to keep 4 backs. As for as him giving you guys any info on our offense, he's still wet behind the ears some so don't expect him to help you much there.
The Jets haven't drafted a really good runningback since Freeman McNeil and Johny Hector. Nobody they've drafted this decade has impressed me all that much. Leon Washington was a good 3rd down back. Lamont Jordan and Shonn Greene just weren't and aren't that good.
He's a willing blocker, and has the skill but like any rookie he had a couple of mental lapses not knowing who to pick up. Having watched every Jets game for the past 3 years I think he'll start getting carries pretty soon. There were some people wanting us to Trade Tate in the off-season and have Grimes as our backup. He was that highly regarded among fans. I think those fans are nuts because Tate is too good to trade away right now, but it says a lot for how we view Grimes. Not happy to lose him at all.
Grimes was ultra-productive in college like some said. William and Mary is one of the better schools in FCS, and they rode Grimes like a horse. Villanova had a really good run defense at that level, and Grimes usually found a way to put up decent numbers and score points. Not a flashy player, but he was very productive in college.
Tate Is Not A Bust He was injured his first year but last year he ran hard and almost had 1000 yards. The guy runs hard and aggressive. I would take Tate over any of our backs.
"his elusiveness, instincts, vision, ability to run low to the ground and set up blocks, strength and leg drive as positives. He also graded out as a good receiver out of the backfield and blocker" Sounds like the complete opposite of Greene... which is a positive. Good vision and ability to setup blocks is key. He can also catch out of the back field. Worth a shot, I like it.
Cool, thanks for the info. I hope he gets some carriers. McKnight hasn't been getting much play so hopefully they will at least use Grimes/Powell more
Just watched whatever I could find on him... Not very fast, has good vision though and does use his blocks well. He's not that powerful and wont run anybody over. We will probably never hear anything of him again in a week, but who knows. He may be a good ST's player though and showed decent hands (caught what was thrown to him on screens and swing passes). His upside is probably limited by his lack of good to great athleticism but he finds the hole well, which is something that Greene cant do. At least they made a move though. At this point, Powell is our best chance at RB. I had faith in McKnight- loved his athleticism and he had very good vision, but he obviously hasnt put it all together yet. Give him a few carries next week vs the Texans and see what he can do, cant be much worse than Greene.
Competition for Shonn Greene, not Bilal Powell. Probably won't do anything, but we've got to try something.
I think part of the problem that is perceived as a decline or inconsistency by Sanchez might actually be that Shonn Greene sucks so badly.
Agreed. When there is no running game, the passing game suffers. That was apparent last night with Green Bay
