Did I miss something he said recently? What exactly is shocking about Rex talking up his team? And what did he recently say that caused the creation of this?
The Jets went polar opposites in terms of coaching from Mangini to Rex. I can see why people don't like Rex, I just don't happen to be one of them. I knew from year one that when the end does come for Rex in NY, it will be spectacularly bad...
On a side note: back in '09/'10 the Jets D would have 1, 2 or no one in a 3 or 4 point stance. The D would be hopping around leading to some confusion by the other teams offense. I was reminded of this when I saw the ATL D doing the same thing last night to Manning with some success. Why doesn't the Jets D do this now?
Hey, they lost 5-2 - 5 scores to 2 scores. In baseball, that's one game and it's not so bad. A couple of big plays that go the other way and the Jets could have won the game. They also played AT Pittsburgh with their best player on the bench.
Jets haven't had a pass rusher in 4 seasons. Not much scheme can do to change that. Jets need to get 1 or 2 desperately this offseason.
He's wrong, no wonder you agree with him. What the Jets did on Sunday was shift to an overt zone scheme, after they realized the makeup of the corners couldn't handle the Steelers' receivers in man coverage. That zone is a bend but don't break scheme. The attacking schemes Rex used in the first two seasons are the furthest from the 'bend but don't break' philosophy as it gets. There's nothing safe about sending a seven man blitz. But don't make me stop you from looking like a fool, that's always enjoyable.
No I wouldnt hate him. He is entertaining and engaging and has some personality. If you ever actually listen to what he says he is pretty much always very self-depreciating and respectful.
The current take on Rex? Hm. I think most fans here are overreacting to the problems on D. Pouha was a key player last year, the int's against Buffalo masked his absence, I think. I also don't think Ellis is there yet. But... Pouha's first game back he was expected to be a bit rusty, and he was. Yet as the game went on he played well, DeVito played well, Wilkerson benefitted, and the DL rotation was a bright spot in the game. I also think the LB's were better than most seem to think. But this is not the place for that discussion. The real issue on D was the secondary. Well, Revis was out, and while the issues were not with Lankster so much, I think his absence was clearly a problem. Landry remains a talent, and I am glad he's here, but he has some hair on his game and needs to play a bit smarter, I think that's all. Bell I frankly did not expect all that much from. He's plugging a gap, may not remain as the starter, and almost certainly will not be a superstar here. He's too old. Smith was also back from injury, the other safeties are too green, so what do we expect? With Revis in there, the worst part of the secondary against Pitt will be back up to snuff I am fairly certain. So I am not that concerned about the D. The O on the other hand... Well, what role does Ryan have in the problems on O? Imo THAT is a real subject for discussion here. But that gets complicated by the roles of Sparano, Tanny and even Woody. Hard to isolate the variable of Ryan when it comes to discussing the O.
I don't get why the D is getting so much heat for that game. It was obvious that the reason they couldnt hold up was because the offense spent no time on the field in the second half. Hard to play D that way.
Because they let up 3 scores on 4 drives in the first half. Field goal to start the game, should be well rested. TD drive from the Jets. FG for the Steelers. FG drive for Jets, Steelers punt. Jets punt. Steelers touchdown. Then one drive in the second half from the Jets offense, then after 3-4 plays they let up another touchdown on 3rd and 16. How were they on the field for a long time? After that, yes the offense left them out to dry. But before then, no excuses. They also missed clean shots at Big Ben early and late in the game.
Also, its the same reason everybody bitched about the defense last year. THE OFFENSE! They keep the defense on the field the whole game, they are bound to give up some points. This same thread is made, erroneously, after every loss.
silly me i thought a HEAD COACH was supposed to know something - anything? - about offfense or at the very least give a damn about it
The defense kept the defense on the field all game by failing to produce stops on 3rd down. How many 3-and-outs did they get? Can't blame the offense when the D was struggling from kickoff onwards.
Many good points come to light on this thread . . . . but one thing that seems to be a constant Rex is out of line a lot of the time and much like our NJ gov, he DOES NOT like to be criticized . . . . but then again who does.
It's always going to be difficult for a defense to look well when they're stuck out there on 10 to 15 minute drives.
