Maybe I am seeing something wrong. I wouldn't know. I think this defense is in for a long season. They cannot rush the passer. They cannot tackle. AND they are slow. Maybe the 'slow' is caused by the slow LBs, but the lack of fundamentals in terms of tackling is appalling. I am getting seriously concerned. They had better get this shit together soon.
Our LB's suck, other then McIntyre not one of them made a play today. In fact the only game changing play any of them have made all season was Scott knocking Revis out last week. Maybin? is he still on the roster? Harris? Severly overated by Jet fans but beaten multiple times today in pass coverage and missed an open tackle on Big Ben Pace - contract can not end fast enough Scott- same as Pace Davis - hopefully gets it but he missed a sack today as well, only time I've heard his name in the first 2 games
I'm not as sold on the defense as I was, but this defense will be a lot better with Revis. The tackling (other than on sacks) wasn't really an issue until the 4th quarter. At that point, the Jets defense was worn out, but the tackling was embarrassing. Pittsburgh couldn't run the ball all game though. They're not a good running offense, but I won't panic about the tackling. And I won't even say the Jets can't rush the passer. They had plenty of free runs on Ben that should have ended up in sacks. Ben is the master at that. Against most quarterbacks, those will end up in sacks.
The defense could have played much better today, but they were still good. The offense totally leaves the defense on the field for too long and makes them look worse than they are.
It's almost like Peyton was to the Colts offense as Revis is to the Jets Defense. Maybe I took that a bit far, but frankly I don't care because it seemed that way.
I read a thread not too long ago that basically characterized anyone questioning people with a problem with the performance of the LB team as making the linebackers 'whipping boys'. Bart Scott is slow and bad to react. Calvin Pace is too slow, not aggressive enough and if a runningback can take him competely out of a play, he sucks, becaause I watched it happen at least 3 times today. I saw some moron say he was flawless in the last game, and he wasnt. I would love to see the same description for this game. Bryan Thomas is injured, but when he is healthy, he is too slow to rush the passer and he is getting to the point where he is ineffective against anything but a power runner. David Harris is a decent player, but anyone pretending that he is an elite MLB is a twat. He is above average, and his failure to cover was highlighted when Heath Miller bitched him in the endzone. That was not a trick play, that was a routine pick up, and he not only failed, he looked average trying to cover him. Not much for speed or instincts. Our linebackers are a huge weakness for this defense. And if anyone thinks that our DL is strong enough to make up for that, they need to stop watching football. Those guys are just too young and maybe too overraated.
The Jets got pressure on Big Ben, they just couldn't sack him. Those hits would have taken down most QB's but not Big Ben. Cromartie, Lankister and Wilson played solidly as a group. Our defense held them off long enough but our offense couldn't take advantage and eventually (once the defense got gassed) scored another TD to put the game away.
I don't think it's time to panic about the D yet. That said, the linebacking corps isn't fast and it's the weak link of the defense. Still have questions about how they will cover tight ends this year, first two games have done nothing to quell that.
Well the good news is it looks like Hernandez could be out of action a while although obviously we'll have to wait to see exactly what is wrong with him. That would leave Gronkowski but I'm not so sure we have the answer to slow him down.
Overreaction thread? Overreaction thread. Yeah, the tackling was shit, but let's be honest the whole team didn't put in a good effort. This is all shit that can be fixed. I like talking football on this board, but not after a game. The reactions are too over the top for me.
Big Ben is the hardest QB to sack in the league. He moves around, is built like a tank, and he's very good at shaking off tackles. Any other QB would have been sacked 3-4 times more today. I wouldn't panic just yet.
I thought today was decent on Miller. It wasn't great, but he really wasn't tearing us up. They kept him bottled up.
David Harris is overrated and gets his stats inflated by playing with slow linebackers who can't tackle. David Harris is a good starter, 7/10 Bart Scott 3.5/10 Bryan Thomas 3/10 Calvin Pace 4/10 Jets have 1 good/very good LB and 3 poor LBs, making their LB corps one of the leagues worst. This cannot be fixed in next year's draft, either. Assuming Demario Davis develops into an average to good linebacker over the next 1-3 years, David Harris will already be on the decline 5-6/10 and we will have 2 huge holes to fill if we stay with the 34 defense. You arent getting 2 starting LBs in next years draft who will be above average. Jets should abandon the 34 and go exclusively with the 43 except in rare circumstances.
It was pretty much highlighted that the Steelers have neglected Miller for a while. I'll have to look at the All-22, but while I don't think he was targeted much, he also spent a lot of time staying in to block.
