1960 marked the 40th anniversary of the NFL. Team allegiance was much more determined by region. One thing that has changed since the Jets won the Super Bowl is the amount of wealth in the NFL. Merchandising existed but you were limited to either the local team or collections of the entire NFL or AFL i.e. the little helmets. Most non-regional fans generally had a connection to that region in the 60s. The 70s saw a large increase in non-regional fan bases and a lot of that can be attributed to the popularity of Monday Night Football. The Cowboys were probably the beginning of the largest non-regional fan base and some of that popularity could be due to their cheerleaders.
I am so tired of insecure Jets fans needing validation from the media and whining like 5 year old's when they don't get it.
Also in the 70s the Giants & Jets stunk and never played meaningful 4:00pm games You got Steelers, Dolphins, Cowboys & Raiders each week, and that was the foundation of their fan bases, at least in the NY area
Yeah well they have to earn respect for it to be given. The 2011 Jets didn't earn it and the 2012 Jets sure don't look like they deserve any either. Oh they can bully lesser teams, big deal. Can't compete against the elite.
Jets are going to keep getting zero respect until we start beating the better teams in this league on a consistent basis. Even with Rex, we still can't get it done.
