Brian Costello @BrianCoz Woody Johnson won't comment about whether Tannenbaum's job is on the line. But says he is confident in this team. #nyj Could just be nothing ... but why not erase any doubt right there?
Well, the way this team is with public statements on jobs, he is about to receive an extension. If Woody said his job is safe, he is already fired.
How can it not be? A lot of terrible draft picks, giving more guaranteed money to Holmes and Sanchez when neither was necessary, getting into cap hell for next year, guaranteeing Hunter and then having to scurry to trade him...really it goes on and on.
The biggest buyers out there right now are the guys in LA. They're also the only group with the deep pockets to assume the Jets debt load and the additional obligations entailed in getting out of the MetLife stadium deal. I want Woody to keep the team and just learn from what has gone on and is going on now. Ownership is the single most important factor in where a team winds up and how they perform. Bob Kraft is the reason the Patriots have become great. The Rooneys are why the Steelers have been great. The Maras have 4 trophies now. Just look at the 49ers and you begin to understand how important ownership really is. Jerry Jones and the Cowboys were great when Jones could leverage all of the Cowboys existing talent against the NFL as the salary cap era began. They declined as soon as that extra talent went away due to cap constraints. Goerge Steinbrenner was great only because he took the single most important factor in professional sports, the amount of money you spend on the players, and he went whole hog on it all the time. The Yankees still do that.
I am Yankee hater #1 but let's be honest, they also did a pretty good job of developing some good in house talent as well. Jeter, Bernie, Mariano, Andy, Jorge. Some of the most important players he brought in were also not high priced guys, Paul O'Neil, Chuck Knoblauch, Charlie Hayes, any number of starting pitchers and chump change guys like Luis Sojo and Brett Boone. I understand what you are saying about ownership but you also have clowns like Snyder and the Davis family who spend the money but have no clue how to run the team.
That is exactly right and that was because George himself made those decisions. Now that Cashman makes them they still spend 200 million a year and can't get out of the first round..this year they may not even make it that far.
Woody also said this today which speaks volumes about what he didn't say concerning Tannenbaum Manish Mehta @MMehtaNYDN Owner Woody Johnson: "I’m very confident in Rex Ryan. You just have to look at the body of work. It’s unparalleled in our history." Still it's difficult to bring in a new GM and force a coach on them unless it is somebody already in house.
We'll make him sell it - go to his house and make him sell the team, and just like Ben Roethlisberger, we won't take no for an answer. Better not fire Rex though in all seriousness - I'll flip shit. Tanny could get demoted to just cap and that's fine by me, get a sensible guy at the GM position that knows football.
I live in Florida now, so I can't comment on a personal level, but I defer to my longtime ticket holder friend from Paramus: "My family has been life long ticket holders. I'll always love the Jets, but they aren't winning a SB this year and they have finally priced me out." That sucks.
