Rumor has it that good guy Woody and shoot from the hip Tanny had Malone in the office already and told him they would be cutting his salary by 20 bucks then what they agreed to an hour ago....
This is like the 30th post of yours I've read in the last 10 minutes with some kind of variation of why Tanny sucks and how he is saving 20 bucks. Do you think just maybe it has more to do with the fact that Conley was the worst punter in the league last year and has had an awful preseason.
I agree that this isn't about money, but Conley was not the worst punter in the league. Inconsistent? You bet. But not the worst.
Averaged under 40 yards a kick. Was ok at dropping it near the goal line on short punts. Is also good for 2 or 3 shanks a year. He was absolutely terrible and I'd be shocked if someone had a worse season.
Gross punting yards, Conley was ranked 10th and Malone was 38th. Granted, Conley punted an awful lot and Malone not as much making this stat useles. In terms of average, Conley was 30th with only Matt Turk and Brad Maynard behind him. Conley was ranked tied for 3rd with punts inside the 20 and tied for 14th in touchbacks. Basically, Conley was excellent at pinning them but displayed horrid consistency leading to his average ranking. I'd also be willing to bet that Conley had more attempts than others at pinning them due to our offense stalling, so I'm not putting an awful lot of stock into that. http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/player/_/stat/punting/sort/puntYards
Kaeding in the regular season stat wise is a great kicker....just he's miserable in the playoffs(Jets should know that of all teams LOL). Also the guy who beat Malone is a top 5 punter in the game in Scifres who is deadly with his accuracy and his leg. No shame in losing out to him.
I'd of loved for the Jets to sign Ray Guy...reality is the Jets replaced Conley...So i'll take that...Everyone was whining about Conley, so now he's no longer our punter. There isn't much available (McBriar's foot is a huge unknown). I'm willing to watch Malone. Not for nothing too, teams can switch punters mid season and not have to worry about playbook or chemistry or anything like that. If Malone doesn't work out, next guy up! My general view on punters is, you don't need a pro-bowl calibre punter. It's nice to have but not necessary. You simply (i use the word simply, losely) need a guy who is consistent. A consistent punter goes a long way. Example, T.J.Conley. Is he the most talented guy out there? No. But if he was consistent he'd still be our punter.
I wouldn't say he was excellent at pinning them inside the 20. He punted a ton last year. He was good but not great. With the amount we have to punt though I want someone who can boot the ball.
I remember Conley shanking a 13 yarder from his own 21 yard line on the opening possession of the game in Denver already putting the pressure on the defense. It enraged me and was deflating to just give them at least 3 points. Bunch of shanks in the New England game up there as well. Good riddance to Conley.
being ranked 3rd makes him excellent at that and especially looking at where he's ranked in TB's considering the volume. But I agree and also noted the volume as a factor. Either way, I want a guy who is consistent...Not a boom here and shank there, because that can really hurt the team.
I would rather have a guy who overkicks for a few touchbacks than a guy who shanks it at midfield over and over.
Conley was awful. I wish we could've kept Weatherford, but now we have the Giants thanking us for him
Mike T drives me crazy Penny wise, pound foolish all the time. We had solid kick game 2 years ago with weatherford and Feely and just shit he bed to save a few bucks for folks like hunter... Kickers mean a lot for GROUND and POUND Mr T. Wake up
He called a fake punt on 4th and 19 and didn't make it. I'm pretty sure that Rex and Westhoff were behind the move to let Weatherford go even if they did not originate it.
What was even more aggravating was that when he fielded questions, he actually said that he didn't realize how many yards where needed for 1st down before play call. Obviously wasn't bothering to watch the game while he was standing on the sidelines.
Of course it's bad...cutting those 4 will get you to the cap for 33 players. How are you going to pay for the other 20? Maybe that's why Tannenbaum is practicing now with 52. They can carry over what they don't spend this year which helps but not enough. Here is what we owe for the 37 players that are not free agents after this season...cut the obvious 4 and you are at the projected cap of 121 million for 33. You still have 20 slots to fill and where is the money coming to pay Revis? Tanny must have been one of those banking on the jumbo cap for 2013 and now they say it isn't going to happen. http://www.nyjetscap.com/salary13.html
The guy on nyjetscap said that its nothnig to panic about (and goes into some detail why) and I trust him more than anyone on here when it comes to the cap.
