Really? I'd be shocked if the Jets weren't looking to improve at punter. Maybe Lanning can give Conley competition. Conley is still the favorite to win the job, but I can't see how he's earned a free pass where competition is really just here to save his leg. I think the Jets want to push Conley and replace him if possible.
I think the Jets are really monitoring the waiver wires trying to bring in guys to possibly replace Conley. Kind of like with Hunter. The Jets hoped Hunter would be better this year, making him a decent right tackle that isn't the worst in the NFL as some would have thought. Between Heyer, Willis, Otah and Ducasse, they hoped someone would push and take the job. Finally, Howard did that. The Jets saw how weak the RT market was, hoped Hunter would be better, and if not, they'd find someone better. Hopefully, that's the case with Howard, but I think Hunter's atrocious preseason forced their hand. The Jets were not happy with Conley after that Giants game. How could they be? I think this is one spot where the Jets have Conley around as a replacement-level punter. Hopefully, Lanning impresses within the next week or so. If not, there will be a lot of other waiver wire guys down the line that will become available, and if they end up replacing punters on other teams' rosters, then we might be able to pick those castaway punters away. That's how the Jets got Weatherford. The Jets went through T.J. Conley, Ken Parrish, Glenn Pakulak, Reggie Hodges and A.J. Trapasso before Weatherford got here week 1. Some punters will be let go the Jets may be interested in. The Jets can bring in someone then. Teams claiming those punters will then cut their current punters to bring in these guys from other teams, and then those players will become available. This is usually the time of preseason where teams cut their punters, not when teams add punters to rest their legs. I'm not sure Lanning is the guy or not, but I do think the Jets are looking at other options at punter if someone impresses them. Conley is 27, but he's been around this team since 2009. On one hand, that shows they clearly think he has some ability. On the other hand, if he's been around this long and still being inconsistent, then it's time to explore other options.
I was just thinking it was pretty late in camp to pickup an inexperienced kicker and have him win the job over the incumbent. If it were an experienced guy it would make more sense to me. You're probably right.
unless he can also play tight end or wide receiver, this is nothing but mindless diversionary tactic by our front office. maybe they hope some eagle will fumble his punt into the end zone so we can finnaly score a td.hmy:
I grew up with Spencer and played soccer with him for years. Then went to South Carolina and obviously watched him play there. Really good kid and am rooting for him to do well. Its good to see him be on another one of my teams. He may not have the strongest leg but he was consistent.
I've never thought Conley was a good choice (my post history attests to this). His 47 yd. ave. in college was kind of inflated by playing home games indoors (Idaho) and away games in either high altitude and/or warm weather sites (Arz, Utah St, Fresno St, LaTech & Hawaii). That said, Lanning, his SEC peigree notwithstanding, isn't taking Conley's job. Lanning imho doesnt have a big enough northeast NFL leg (cold, wind) and tonight's puny 38 and 34 yard punts didn't help him any. That said, until Conley matures and becomes more consistant and with more of a man-sized leg himself, I'm still not going to feel comfortable in the Jet punting game. I would be shocked if Lanning's still a Jet come this weekend.
Both of the punters we have now SUCK, Tanny make a move and get a real punter. Sign the Raiders guy. Go Jets
