Thought he looked really good, even against the Panthers first team oline. Seemed to be in the backfield constantly, had more pressures than his stats would indicate. The thing about Coples that people need to realize is that he's more of a DT than a DE even though he has prototypical 4-3 DE size. He gets consistent pressure when playing inside, and is a very disruptive force against Guards. He is more of a power player than a finesse player, and seems to have a bit of trouble changing direction once he has a head of steam. I think people are expecting him to be our Jason Pierre-Paul, when he's really more of a Richard Seymour. Not a bad thing by any means. I think Rex's disappointment in him is more of a motivational tactic than anything. If you know anything about football and watched this game, you cannot say that Coples didnt't play a good game, especially for a rookie. Yes, it's a bit sad that Rex thinks he still needs motivation. But the guy has a lot of talent, it's undeniable at this point.
Manish Mehta @MMehtaNYDN Rex thought Coples got winded a bit. Also not pleased with a "woe is me" moment when Rex pulled starters but left him in. #nyj
He'll get all the rest he needs next week. It's a good thing he did start in if he was acting like that.
i thought ellis was constantly in the backfield and he had a batted pass as well. he was a beast today.
Guess who hates pressure up up the middle in his face? Tom Brady. (along with every other QB, but you know what I mean... with pressure up the middle Brady is mortal)
What the hell are you talking about? I posted a tweet of someone quoting Rex Ryan. Yea - I think Rex watched the game. So did I. Any other questions?
Was impressed, but Rex is making him earn this. And he should pushing himself, taking every snap he possibly can.
Yeah obviously Rex watched the game. If you watched Coples play though, you would know that Rex could not realistically be disappointed in him as a rookie. He played very well.
Not surprised by this, given that he didn't have to work to earn anything, including grades, at Carolina.
coples has stood out more then mo wilk did as a rook and has stood out more then mo wilk this pre-season so far.
I've also been very impressed with how Ellis played. He is a mountain of a man but he moves quick off the snap and gets good penetration.
Totally agree with you on the bolded. He does play more like a DT (at the moment) than a DE. Gets better and more consistent pressure playing inside than outside. I do like the fact that we can move Coples around the line a bit and use him as a DE or DT. What I didn't like is that the Jets took him out of a lot of 3rd and long situations. He is (arguably) the best pass rusher on the team as far as pure skill and ability is concerned. What he needs to improve on most is his recognition of offensive plays. But that will come with time.
I thought Coples has played well this preseason. better than most and I think he will be a force once he gets more experience. Doens't matter where they line him up he makes plays. I think we can officially end the Gholston comparisons right now. In fact it was eliminated the first game of the preseason when he had a sack.
Ellis was even better than Coples, the kid looked like a prime Kris Jenkins, constantly getting the better of perennial probowler Ryan Kalil. I love Pouha, but man Ellis is gonna be hard to keep off the field.
jets could have one of the better defensive lines in the league this season, if not in a few years. is that a far-fetched thing to say?
Wilkerson also looked good, one play in particular he came up the middle and pushed his man right back into Newton's face. Impressive group.
